I just want the season to start already! my obsessive personality is being deprived.
They think they need to sex him up? Okey-dokee. But hey, it can't be that bad. I'm not too sure about Nicole - as long as the writing is strong, it should be okay. Didn't VDO not want the whole "soap" aspect not played up? It does give him a little more to play with characterization wise.

IMHO - I looked at Rene's promo blurb in 2 ways
1. "Hey buddy, you are not going to fool me again" - he stated when Buck was subbing for Erbe that she was going to be an "In Your Face" kind of partner. The friction would be fun. Well, she was about as assertive as cold oatmeal. So were we just baited? Maybe
2. Or, the powers that be and Vincent like to shake up the character, tone up and down, etc. This is a business that needs to keep a handle on what the viewers want to feed on. If Bebe had sense, which I am sure he does, one of his assistants is most likely Board surfing and getting an opinion of what Vincent's viewers want. If that happened, it would be very obvious that Vincent has an abundance of sex appeal. You know, the gushy boards are full of it. Even an International blurb ex Japan wrote him up as "Sex On Legs", too funny. It makes marketing sense to use his natural talents to the benefit of the show.
I have no problem with that either as long as the stories remain tight, and well done. As long as Vincent retains his creative freedom to shake it up as he sees fit, I am all for it. I believe him, and trust his words. No soap, means no soap, but playing around a bit, can work oodles for the show because it is not as formula as the other L&O's and can get away with it. It revolves around him, I think we can trust his direction.
Now please - on with the show!! I am also deprived.

Velocity:
I like the sex apeal factor but only in a very specific way. I already see him (Goren) as sexy because, one, he's such a masculine, physically imposing guy (I like) but two because he is somewhat weird, intense and relentless and a unique mix of intellect and, almost, feminine intuition.
I'd be really wary of following the direction we posters write about. Much of that is fan and fic fantasy - the sort of stuff one can find on any show, ER, NYPD, etc.
I want them to stay different so hopefully we won't have to swim to too much soap this season!

That's what my wife keeps telling me. At least I'm in the same company as Robert Goren in this regard, in addition to having my own personal copy of the PDR.

No foreign language on the boards, please. It violates ProBoards terms of service agreement and could result in this board being deleted. I'm sure your post is totally innocent, but it needs to be edited just in case someone gets trigger happy and reports the site for it. Thanks

Season premiere episode information from the NBC site...
SEMI-DETACHED 9pm 2004-09-26 ALL NEW!
DETECTIVES WONDER WHY CONTROVERSIAL RADIO DEEJAY WAS SWITCHED OFF PERMANENTLY -- When a self-destructive, controversial radio deejay is found dead of asphyxiation, Detectives Goren (Vincent D'Onfrio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) believe it's a suicide -- but after learning that the dead man was issued placebos instead of his anti-depressant medications, they suspect that an obsessive female fan may be to blame. Their investigation broadens when another related victim is murdered but the key to an arrest hinges on both how and why the passive-aggressive slayer chose to act. Jamey Sheridan and Courtney B, Vance also star. TV-14

Yes, Techguy, I agree with your wife. Show me a smart guy who can make me laugh--preferably with a good voice--and I will definitely sit up and take notice. To quote a former student of my mother's, "That's a man Mrs. [Catbird]!" How many other "Daily Show" fans we got out here?
And foreign languages can get us in trouble? Huh--well, not that I know enough to cause problems, just seems odd to me.

True, brains are sexy. And a sense of humor to boot? Awesome.
I'm suure that they're looking to increase the viewers, and hence the not needed "sexing up" of Goren. I know CI does have the reputation of being the "odd one" because of VDO's characterization. Of course, that's why I watch it, but I guess they're going for a more universal appeal? As long as they don't kill it. It's not like it's floundering in the ratings either.

Catbird, and All, The foreign language ban is not my idea. This is a standard ProBoards rule so that the owner, Patrick Clinger, can read any post at any time. He speaks English, so he demands that all boards be in English. Why does he need to be able to read the posts? Patrick is ultimately responsible for all activity on all ProBoards, and those that break California or United States law can get him into trouble (ProBoards selling drugs, weapons, or boards containing s e x ually* explicit material aimed at or about minors are problems he has already had -- many times.) Naturally, he has a few people working for him and quite a few volunteers who scan boards for any terms of service violations. When they find a board, they give the admin a 72 hour window to delete the problem content before the board is deleted. That's pretty nice of them, right? Well, the problem is that, as much as I like being here, there are times when more than 72 hours pass between my logins. If we got probed and reported, I could miss that deadline, and you all should know that. This is the part of the TOS as it applies to you: 3. CONTENT RESTRICTIONS
Your web site must conform to the following standards to be eligible to utilize this service:
A) User's content must comply in a manner consistent with any and all applicable laws of the State of California and the US Federal Government.
B) User's web site may not contain content promoting the use of illegal drugs, alcohol, s e x*, p o r n o graphy*, n u d ity*, or any other form of adult content, profanity, hate, "spam," fraud, racism, mlm, pyramid schemes, or promote any illegal activity. C) User's message board and Web site must be in English.* just because we are not allowed to post said material, that won't stop google from advertising it. You don't have to write these words like this, but it will help keep ads for such from being listed on the tops of our pages

An obsessive female fan may be the killer!! Does anyone think that may be Mr. Balcer's tongue-in-cheek nod to all the female viewers out there who've been in LOCI withdrawal all summer???

Obsessive female fans?? Here? Wha-chu talk'n about, twilight? [/Gary Coleman] ;D And welcome to the board, btw.
I suppose it's possible ... we Monk fans got an unmistakable nod for our outcries against the theme song change, and Mr. Balcer has said in the past that he likes to read internet message boards about L&O, I think he referred to them as instant gratification. So, you never know. I hope that in such a case, we would be portrayed like the Sarah Silverman character. Obsessive, but cute.

From TV Guide.com Where we left off: Nicole Wallace, the Professor Moriarty–like nemesis of the Sherlock Holmesian detective Robert Goren, was still on the loose. "We left the door open for her, and she will be returning," says executive producer Rene Balcer. "Another dimension of her depravity will be revealed."
Tales from the dark side: "We're taking Goren into weirder and weirder territory in terms of his involvement with perpetrators," Balcer says. "I don't want to get too specific, but the network promos usually give it away, anyway." Yeah, we hate that, too.www.tvguide.com/tv/showguide/showPage.asp?iProgramID=3145905
