My sentiments on the subject mirror amnesic's, but I would like to add that, unlike other boards, we have no set rules against discussing the private lives of the cast and crew. But as it is possible that they read the board and could even be members, you need to give them the same respect that you give your fellow posters. That means that you may not post any derogatory or defaming remarks about them. We understand that no one is perfect, but don't be unkind just to be unkind. We have no patience for such behavior. We don't want to read mindless chitchat or irrelevant speculation, either. If what you have to say will not be of interest to the other posters, or if you have no evidence to back up your gossip, please keep it to yourself.
In short, don't be mean, stupid or annoying.
If you have any questions or comments about this, take them to the Forum Questions and Comments thread in the Welcome and Help Center, or contact a moderator.

I hope D'Onofrio is feeling better and wish him all the best. I accept that people have always been interested in the private lives of film and TV stars. The movie magazines of the 1940s and 50s attest to this interest. I actually remember when there wasn't a "People" magazine and people respected other people. Understanding that publicity is sometimes a necessary evil, a part of me still deplores the lack of civility (for lack of a better word) that exists in the "dumpster diving" style of what passes as news today. I know it will be discussed, but I applaud the members and administrators of this board for taking the higher road.
I enjoy the thoughtful discussions.

I understand Mastermind and Hathaway's direction here, and will not speak further of the Post article and its veracity or lack of it. I would like to commend the members of this board for an in-depth, respectful discussion. I heard much less intelligent and much more naive, as well as more argumentative posts elsewhere.
Listening to various people's comments about the health issues - my overall feeling is that I wish that D'Onofrio would take better care of his health - in whatever form that care might take. I'm been in jobs where I have had to work 11-14 hour days including some weekends and it's brutal on the body and mind. I finally had to give up the job in question due to the health issues it caused. It wasn't worth it. So it doesn't surprise me that he "crashed and burned" due to the cumulative effects of exhaustion. I hope that he can get some TLC and R&R to come out feeling normal again.
Various people brought up the very valid point that whether it's smoking, drinking, overeating, drugs, or other vices, those behaviors tax the body. Observer brought up the legitimate fact that smoking calms people down, and that in order to quit successfully, one has to have the strategy and support to accomplish it, plus the means to deal with the stress effectively without cigarettes. My specific wish for D'Onofrio is that he can get that support, learn those new strategies, and kick the habit one day.
Is it my business whether he smokes or not? No, of course it isn't. He's an adult. He makes his own choices, as do we all.
Am I the "pot calling the kettle black" here? Yes, actually, I am and I admit it. Nothing revs me better than caffeine and sugar, and nothing calms me better than carbohydrates. A drug is a drug, no matter the form. I struggle with overeating and I am trying to turn the corner and learn new strategies for health and fitness.
But, you see, I wish for D'Onofrio the exact same that I wish for all of my friends and relatives who smoke, and in fact, anyone at all who smokes. That one day they may have the power and ability to quit.
Because I have seen with my own eyes the insidiousness of nicotine addiction. I have seen how it slowly chokes the life out of people over time, making their lives and those of their loved ones more and more limited as weeks and years go by. I have watched over and over a person choosing cigarettes over everything else, despite all indications to the contrary (inhalers, nebulizers, steroids, pills, oxygen, wheelchairs, respirators). My mother freely admitted that she LOVED to smoke. She felt that cigarettes were her "best friends". And those best friends were with her, as I was, to the very end of her life, just hours before she died of emphysema.
D'Onofrio probably started smoking when he was somewhere between 15-18 years old. It's been mentioned in multiple interviews that he smokes Marlboros and Camels, and probably the unfiltered variety. So we are now looking at 17-20 years of smoking here, even if it is not continous, and even if he does not smoke in front of his children (thankfully). Some of the damage is done, but it's still early enough to reverse some. He's only 45 years old, which means he still is a "young man" in my book. He still has the energy and vibrancy to take on the challenge of kicking the habit, and being able to do it. When he is 55 or 65, he may not have that energy. And by 75, forget it, it will be too late.
That all being said, I re-state my original opinion that D'Onofrio heed this wake-up-call, for his own sake. I wanted to clarify my earlier comment on Trisha's post, so that my position was clear and that the membership understood that I was not a rebel ranter without a cause. Thanks for listening.

Domenica! You'd never be considered a RRWAC! But what about just a rebel, eh? ;D
This is something some of my friends have read that helped them quit. It's by Ann Landers. I've always liked that girl's optimism. It's on how quitting smoking reverses the effects of the health concerns.
Ann Landers, "Numbers Don't Lie," Quit Now [04/12-4] Excerpts from NUMBERS DON'T LIE: QUIT SMOKING
By Ann Landers, Chicago Tribune [04/12/00]
Dear Ann Landers: My niece is trying to quit smoking, and is having a terrible time. I told her you once printed a letter describing what happens to the body after someone stops smoking. It made a strong impression on me, and I'm sure it did on many others too. Will you please print it again to encourage my niece to keep trying? She is discouraged, and ready to give up. Dee Dee in Detroit
Dear Dee Dee: With pleasure. I was told after reading this column, many people did quit smoking. Here it is:
According to the American Cancer Society, as soon as you snuff out that last cigarette, your body will begin a series of physiological changes.
Within 20 minutes: Blood pressure, body temperature and pulse rate will drop to normal.
Within eight hours: Smoker's breath disappears. Carbon monoxide level in blood drops, and oxygen level rises to normal.
Within 24 hours: Chance of heart attack decreases.
Within 48 hours: Nerve endings start to regroup. Ability to taste and smell improves.
Within three days: Breathing is easier.
Within two to three months: Circulation improves. Walking becomes easier. Lung capacity increases up to 30 percent.
Within one to nine months: Sinus congestion and shortness of breath decrease. Cilia that sweep debris from your lungs grow back. Energy increases.
Within one year: Excess risk of coronary heart disease is half that of a person who smokes.
Within two years: Heart attack risk drops to near normal.
Within five years: Lung cancer death rate for an average former pack-a-day smoker decreases by almost half. Stroke risk is reduced. Risk of mouth, throat and esophageal cancer is half that of a smoker.
Within 10 years: Lung cancer death rate is similar to that of a person who does not smoke. The pre-cancerous cells are replaced.
Within 15 years: Risk of coronary heart disease is the same as a person who has never smoked.

My brother gave up smoking 9 months ago, he Is 30 and had smoked since 16. He had tried alot of times before but this time I think he will make It. I have severe asthma, so i cant tell you what smoke and other sprays ect do to me, no I dont smoke. My dad smoked for 20 odd years gave It up but still had dammage to the lungs. In all i hope Vince takes everybodys advice about the ciggies, Im sure the doc will have read him the riot act by now. If I hear anything about him I will post straight away, but somehow with all the speculation on his fainting, he might pull out all the stops to keep anything getting out now. He has probobly gone home secretly and Is resting. If It were very serious Im sure DIck Wolf would have made a statement to that affect. thank you for listenig. Katie

Yes, Sirenna I am definitely a rebel! ;D According to Variety from 11/15/04, D'Onofrio is back on the set: ************ (Variety) GOOD MORNING: And it's hopefully a good morning for Vincent D'Onofrio, star of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent." Producer Dick Wolf said the actor has a 7 am call today on the set at Chelsea Piers, having been released from the hospital over the weekend. Wolf, who spoke to D'Onofrio in the hospital, says an MRI report returned Monday was "clear." The company had shuttered for one day when the series' lead was hospitalized following a series (four) of faintings. Wolf said he was suffering from "exhaustion" and characterized the lead role in this drama series as "the worst job in show business -- a 14-hour work day for nine months." Of all three Wolf series, he said, "no one has a tougher schedule than Vincent." He called reports of fights on the set as "ludicrous" ... *****************

that's good to hear!
I noticed the ellipses at the end of the piece. Is there more to the variety article?

Dom;
Thanks for the good news.
VARIETY is a bit more reputable than the NYPOST, although what it prints is usually the company line. But it seems Dick Wolf is more than willing to defend Mr. D'Onofrio.

I left the ellipsis in place because the rest of the article has news about other celebrities and actors.
I figured that it was "the company line", but newsworthy just as well, to put some positive closure on the issue.
