From a website originating in the UK. AL ---------------------- Wolf wants Muslim Law and OrderBy Kate McMahon BroadcastNow February 11, 2009 Excerpt: "Law and Order creator Dick Wolf wants to create a spin-off version of the long-running crime drama set in a Muslim country. Speaking at the launch of Law and Order: UK, Wolf said his "fantasy wish" would be to establish the drama format in the Egyptian capital of Cairo or a similar city in the Middle East... ..."A murder is a murder, and you can move the format to as many countries that would have a city large enough to make the murders in each episode believable." Other countries which have launched their own version of Law and Order are France and Russia. Wolf is also in talks with Germany broadcasters to create a version of the programme set in Berlin. He added that he was "very impressed" with Law and Order: UK, especially since he could "finally understand what the people are saying". Wolf added that he would like to see a Law and Order cross over episode, where cast from the US and the UK versions collaborate together on a criminal investigation. "I think that cross over will be inevitable," he said. "And I would love a US broadcaster to pick up Law and Order: UK for the States for Saturday nights… I think it would be really well received." LOVE IT!! How clever you are. ;D The idea of a Muslim law & order is fascinating. It would teach those who assume that all Muslims are terrorists & murderers a thing or two. That civilized people abhor killing, and it isn't just a view Christians & Jews share.

Interesting idea, but I can't help but think it would get a little graphic given some of the judicial punishments in many of those countries.

Hmmmmm...intriguing...
I haven't seen any of the L&O World versions, but I'd like to see one or two Muslim detectives on one of the U.S. shows. I'd like to see how Muslim detectives(strong in their faith) living in the U.S. reconcile their beliefs with the current U.S. worldview much like L&O has done with its Catholic detectives.
Perhaps the Muslim viewpoint will replace the Catholic viewpoint since Catholism is somewhat watered down today. Yes, I'll say that even with the recent news reports about the re-emergence of Catholic indulgences. I mean, isn't there a world of difference between the world of Greevey/ Cerretta and Lupo(is he even Catholic?)? There was even a difference between G/C and Logan, but there we got to see two sides of the coin and that made for interesting T.V. What's a 21st century Catholic look like?(but that's another topic.) Maybe Lupo's new partner will turn out to be Muslim.
I could watch a few crossovers with U.S. detectives. I'd like an introduction to Sharia through the eyes of U.S. detectives. Perhaps a series of crossovers that would bring into focus the variations among the Mid East countries. Would they employ Mid-East writers to capture those nuances? As long as it's authentic and not contrived and hokey, I'd have some interest in how these dramas are resolved or not resolved.
As for a show that's made in and consists of an all Muslim cast, I'd have to see how that would play out.

I totally agree with this. And think of Stone in relation to McCoy.
I think that this is because traditional Roman Catholicism is simply more marginalized, or more viewed as marginal by the mainstream media, than it used to be.

*btw I'd like to see a Law & Order set in an exotic locale that Dick Wolf never thinks of, such as Cleveland, Louisville, or Detroit

"Many of those countries" are a lot more westernized than we realize. Our view is definitely tainted by the media and I think it' s hard to "generalize". Also, I think it's hard to classify "those" countries. From as far west as Marocco to as far East as Indonesia many countries have huge muslim populations, yet Islam is a very diverse religion and the cultures in these countries are very different, too.
Since Wolf specifically mentioned Cairo - Egypt is a perfect example. It's way more westernized than we think, I was acutally surprised by the parallelism of some mores when I visited in 2006. There are huge segments of the population that really are secular and live a more or less "western" life.
I also have huge reservations about a L&O in Berlin. I think it would be hard to retain the classic L&O flavor but put German actors and life into it, simply for the fact that you cannot compare Berlin and NYC. I also think that people like our cops shows way too much to accept such an idea, but I could be wrong.
Like hansen21 I think the more intriguing idea would be to have a muslim detective on one of the L&O's. Or a man/woman with arabian background. Most TV-shows are cast so that there's at least one african-american and one hispanic, so why not add a arab/muslim to the mix?

I'm not sure which episode it was, but Lupo told Green that he attended Catholic School, and made a snarky comment about the nuns who taught him. So it's likely that he is Catholic.
We don't know Bernard's faith yet, so it's possible that he could be Muslim. I agree with you Hansen, that a Muslim Detective on one of the American L & O's would make for some interesting dynamics.

Cairo would be very interesting. I'd love to see some stories dealing with art theft and archeology.
