It's probably a U.S. thing, but towns like Cleveland, or cities in New Jersey like Hackensack, are the butt of jokes. Places where you wouldn't want to live, or are devoid of fun & excitement. A "a postcard for Cleveland" suggests that Zack simply floated from town to town with no real purpose or intent...trying to find himself, perhaps? Hope I haven't offended anyone from Cleveland or New Jersey. I think they know what I'm saying. There's a reputation some places have. Like NYC is the place where you get mugged & then murdered.

Ration Ration Ration Those were the words used when the question was asked about the Nichols' backstory at the NBC Press Tour. What we got in Rock Star is all we are going to get apparently. I like it.

Cleveland isn't as bad as it used to be. There was a joke--"What's the difference between Cleveland and the Titanic? Cleveland has a better orchestra."
Things are much better there now. But I don't think LOCI meant any insult to Cleveland, and I didn't take DJ's comments as such.
Gary, Indiana, on the other hand...Shudder....

If LOCI is back to earlier format, we'll be fed Nichols background story in little Tidbits, here and there... and I think that could work out great, adds an air to mystery to the character. Bobby had that before we went into his backstory so much.

That's exactly how I would like the Zach character to play out. 25% Tidbits 75% Mystery Not just this season but for as long as Jeff decides to stay with the show. Good word Tjara: Mystery!

Having grown up in Cincinnati and am currently visiting here now, it reminds me of the special nickname we have for Cleavland, the mistake on the lake . As for this episode and Jeff Goldblum's debut, I decided to watch the show at least twice before commenting. I think I was too rash on the season premier and wanted to give this an honest opinion. Over all I thought it was pretty decent. I could see where Zach could be compared to early Goren, especially with the chart he made. I could so see the Goren from season 1 and 2 doing that. I know someone mentioned early in the thread about how other shows since have knocked off Goren, but I would think this being the same show the producers and writers would try to make him very different. I have hopes that Jeff Goldblum and the writers will do so in the future. I like that Wheeler has more of a personality, perhaps being betrayed by her fiancee has made her more jaded in life. I also liked how Ross implied that she was the reason that Logan left, but she threw it back at him and implied Logan left because of him. So obviously neither one really knows why Logan quite. I like her sarcasm with Nichols, she is really a little impatient with him and his ways. I think it is very different than the sarcasm that Eames use to have with Goren. I always found Eames as slightly teasing with Goren. Wheeler also is no longer afraid to question Ross like she was in early season 6. I really enjoyed her thank you Capt. Freud. I had figured out the young blond kid had done the elevator murder right after it had happened, but I didn't know who had killed Titter till the end. I think Nichols knew they both were involved but he hadn't figured out the why till the aria, which is probably why he didn't tell Wheeler. I also get the sense that there is some tension between Nichols and Ross. I get the feeling that Ross isn't that enthusiastic to have him in major case, but maybe felt like he owed him for old time's sake. Overall I enjoyed it. I am a little concerned that Nichols is a little too much like Goren, but I liked the direction the Wheeler character is taken.

I don't see that Nichols is really all that comparable to Goren – they are both tall though – so maybe. When it was announced that Jeff Goldblum was going to join LOCI my first thought was that Jeff Goldblum is a perfect fit for USA and their 'characters welcome' style. Mr. Goldblum's quirkiness, his casual and light offhanded delivery, the … the… the… stuttering rhythm of his speech are as similar in nature to any number of characters on other USA shows as well as the nod to Goren. The notion that the Nichols character might be calculated or premeditated (it is after all a crime drama) to make the character fit the network and then fit that character into the LOCI universe is something that I've been going back and forth between. But so far - after only the one episode - but if 'Rock Star' is any indication, I think there is some evidence that it might have been considered to an extent. The overall tone was lighter and breezier than any LOCI episode I can remember - with the possible exception of Vanishing Act – but that may have just be an indication of how much I enjoyed VA. None of which means that I didn't enjoy Goldblum/Nichols. The Nichols/Wheeler teaming works. It works in a way that the Logan/Barek/Wheeler/Falacci/Wheeler teamings never did – yet I always liked the Logan character and Chris Noth - even though his episodes didn't seem to fit LOCI. I did always have a question about how Logan with all his troubles (punching out the city councilman, etc.) was able to rate as 'senior' partner, and yet Goren is the one who'll "never make senior partner" (and that was before Tates) ….. I digress. I eagerly look forward to many more episodes of Nichols/Wheeler and Goren/Eames. I'm watching LOCI as long as they keep making 'em. And probably a lot longer than that. Although after only two episodes, talk of season 9 seems premature. But I'm ready, where do I sign up? ;D

Oh yes, I don't see Goren comparable to Nichols unless you're talking height.

Which reminds me that when I went to the Supermarket the other day, I saw a tall guy around 6'5" and he had gray curly hair, and the same shap as VDO LOL. I didn't see his face though.. Wonder if he was really looking like VDO? So Off topic lol

OT: I waited on a gentleman yesterday and when I saw his name on his credit card I thought why does that name sound familiar? Then I remembered! His name was Charles Webb.

There's a former political analyst for CBS news that went on to become a spokesperson for the McCain campaign during the election. Her name is Nicole Wallace. It gave me a chuckle every time I heard her name mentioned during the campaign.

Quote. I don't see that Nichols is really all that comparable to Goren – they are both tall though – so maybe.
Of course the characters are not alike, height has nothing to do with it, the show was written especially for, and around Goren. He is the main character of the actual show, so the others are there only as support, but we already know that. The audience will have to decide what impact the new detective`s character adds to the show over time. We really need to see a season to know that outcome, from all observations.
