Mary Travers, the alto voiced folksinger who was one third of the group Peter, Paul, and Mary, died yesterday at the age of 72. She'd fought a long battle with leukemia and died from the affects of complications from a bone marrow transplant.
I'm a fan of PP &M, and always admired Ms. Travers for her humor, committment, spirit and grace. I was fortunate enough to see the group twice, and the events remain wonderful memories. I was very surprised to learn that Ms. Travers was very shy and suffered from stage fright. One would never know that from her terrific stage presence.
She was a great singer. The world was better for her presence and is lesser for her absence.

Ah, finally.....I was waiting for a thread on her. Thank you for your beautiful obituary, Patcat!
I have never seen them live, of course (I was born in 68 and never made it to the States, anyway), but Peter, Paul and Mary are a legend in Germany as well. I grew up with their music and since my husband and I fell in love singing folk songs together, I have very fond memories going with their songs.....so sad......

Puff, by the way, is not, as many lunatics on both the right and left have suggested, is not about marijuana. It is, as Peter Yarrow said at the two concerts I attended, "About the loss of innocence and wonder. And since children understand that, we sing it early in our concerts so the children in the audience will still be awake. And we sing the last chorus in the present tense because we believe people can hold on to that innocence and wonder."
I have vivid memories of Mr. Artist on CAPTAIN KANGAROO drawing wonderful pictures to PUFF.

So sad to read about her passing. PP&Mary were such a big part of my teen life. I had not thought of Mr. Artist on Capt. Kangaroo in years. Yea, I remember those drawings too.
Puff the Magic Dragon always made me cry. Guess my own loss of innocence.
Our prayers are for her friends and family. Sounds like she was ill for several years. A very hard walk I am sure. God bless all of them.

I had always heard those rumors about the song - but I have it on my iPod & the lyrics just don't go with a pot-headish story .... so I never believed it. Nice to hear it from someone who heard it directly from the group. Mary had a wonderful voice.
