Role Model
By Keith O'Brien
From Ally McBeal to law & order, Medford's Julianne Nicholson has proven she's in the game to stay.
What did you do to prepare for your role as a detective on Law & Order: Criminal Intent?
I didn’t go to a shooting range. But we did a lot of gun work beforehand: handling the gun, holsters, handcuffs – that sort of thing.
Is your gun real?
Normally, it’s a fake gun made of heavy plastic. But if I draw the weapon, or it’s a close-up, then they’ll give me a real gun.
You’ve had success landing both movie roles and recurring parts on TV shows – Ally McBeal, Conviction, Criminal Intent. But your first season always turns out to be the show’s last.
I know. I’m going to start thinking it’s me soon.
What will you do if this one ends?
Well, I will look for another job.
How hard is it to find work for an established actress like yourself?
First of all, it’s music to my ears to even hear you say “an established actress.” I feel like I could be back waiting tables any day. I have to just assume now that I’ll get another job, because there’s no evidence otherwise. But it’s definitely hard. Especially as I get older, it’s a little bit harder to maintain that faith that you’ll keep working.
You’re 35. Is that considered old in acting?
Older.
Why?
There’s like a buzz when somebody’s new and young. Now I’ve been around a while – now I’m probably sharing way too much – but it’s tricky to stay out of your head and try and just keep doing good work and trust that those things will keep coming to you.
You went to Arlington Catholic High School. So that means you graduated in 1989?
That’s right. I know. My 20-year high school reunion is in a couple of years.
Are you going to go to it?
I hope so. Yeah.
Are you the star of the 1989 graduating class of Arlington Catholic?
No. Definitely not.
In high school, who were you?
This is a little bit embarrassing, but I remember this, and I’m going to share it with you. To give you an idea of who I was, I was voted Best All-Around.
What does that mean?
I was on the track team. I was in the French club. I was on student senate. I was editor of the yearbook.
Your film Brief Interviews With Hideous Men is due out soon. What are you hoping to do next?
I would love to get lead roles in films that people see. I’ve got the whole thing down of doing lead roles in films that people don’t see. So I feel like the next step for me would be movies that people watch.
