Just finished watching Part 1 of "Loyalty"; it's a bit over the top, but it's always fun to see Goren fed up and angry. I was initially distressed by the violence suggested in the previews for next week's conclusion--Goren seems unhinged again. Then a couple of thoughts occurred to me: as many of you have noted, previews sometimes lie. Also, is it possible that Goren is undercover? What better way to get up close to the smugglers than to play the "lunatic," as the annoying FBI agent called him? Also, the Chief of D's is shown in the preview--could he and the FBI agents be part of the smuggling ring? If so, it makes sense for Goren to play crazy and get suspended--after all, the Chief of D's has questioned Goren's sanity on several occasions. When he gets physical in the courthouse hallway, when Eames says, "That was bad, Bobby," what does Goren mean when he replies, "No, that was good"? It's almost as if he was testing a theory. Thoughts? I am probably way off base, but I will be curious to see how all the dangling plot threads are addressed next week. Oh, one other possibly weird thought: did Pt. 1 of "Loyalty" feel a lot like a "Miami Vice" episode to anyone else? International smugglers meeting with (seemingly) dirty cops on deserted parking lots with the city skyline in the background? All they needed was Phil Collins singing "In the Air Tonight." Maybe it was an homage to Dick Wolf, since he was involved with MV prior to the L&O franchise.

Goren isn't acting crazy in Part 2, IMO. Not even unhinged. He's just PISSED! Fed up and pissed off. With good reason. I was a huge fan of Miami Vice, and you're right, it was a bit reminiscent of that, too. VDO did a Miami Vice episode. I believe it was S1, but might've been S2. It was called "The Last Plane Out".

Living vicariously through all of you...envious you get to see this episode before me. I was getting worked up watching the promo. I bet I'll be bouncing around in excitement when I get to watch it.

Cadesdad, I hope you're right about Goren being undercover instead of just angry and unable to control his emotions. Goren was never an Elliot Stabler until the last few seasons. I hate for him to end on that terrible note.
A twist that might aid your theory - did anyone else think the female voice in the background who says "My God you're clever, but inconvenient Goren" while Bobby was led by gunpoint into the room with the bag over his head sounds like the in-charge female FBI agent? Is she in on all of this? Did she ambush Ross?

I'll have to use the ASP bat on myself, but I believe the son of the Somali chief (who I don't think was even a pirate) is responsible for the various deaths, including Ross.
Moonbeam, I think you're thinking of SMILES.

I was a big MV fan also--I have all 5 seasons on DVD. I think VDO's episode was in Season 3 and he was billed as Philip Vincent D'Onofrio, if I recall correctly.

That would explain why she sees Goren as "inconvenient."

But these killings...the guy who's doing it is working for Hassan, so...

Thanks, Cadesdad for the info. I couldn't recall the season. It was one of my favorite episodes, along with "Whatever Works" and the ones dealing with Calderone, especially when Tubbs fell in love with Angelina, Calderone's daughter.
I'm working on getting the series on DVD. I used to have them all on homemade VHS tapes, from back when FX used to air them everyday at 5PM. Quite a few years ago. LOL!

Now I remember it was "Smile." Maybe its just me, but FBI agents are usually portrayed as the bad guys, so...I'm thinking since the current writers don't have an original thought in their heads, it's only logical the female agent has to be involved someway, somehow.

Part of me hopes that the Chief of D's is involved, and if Goren really is fired, I hope one of his last achievements with Major Case is to bring that smug jerk down.
