Playbill article about the play Cymbeline, starring Martha Plimpton and Jonathan Cake (Julianne Nicholson's husband). Julianne is quoted thusly: "Mrs. Cake — Julianne Nicholson of 'Law and Order: Criminal Intent' — beamed blissfully on the sidelines. 'I'm on maternity leave right now, but I'll be back in January. We just had a baby three months ago. A friend thought up the name — Ignatius — and it just stuck.'"

To parents who tag their children with names like that, I have always wished I could ask them "what the hell were you thinking?!!". I know parents have the right to name their children whatever pops into their heads, but at some level they've got to know that the teasing and hassling that will accompany the REALLLLLY NEAT NAME they stuck on the kid will be headache for the child. JMHO

What makes me giggle is her quote...a friend thought up the name and it just stuck, as if they kept tossing names at the poor kid.
Diablodeblanco, I've spent a lot of time in my daughter's elementary school volunteering over the past 5 years, and I have NEVER heard anyone being teased because of their name. I've never heard it around the neighborhood, either. Granted, we live in a diverse suburb of Chicago and maybe that's a factor. It's hard to make fun of "Ignatius" when he's sitting next to kids named "Zankar" and "Shivam" and "Marshunna" and "Ananada."

When my son was in elementary school I was one of several homeroom moms. We saw kids teased because of appearance, name, scholastic performance, etc.. Perhaps teachers now are more aware of the effects that teasing and bullying can have on children and so prohibit that behavior from happening in the school. Great for kids now, not so good for kids that attended school when my son was.

Ignatius is a (Catholic, very Catholic) saint's name .. it's not like they named him Moon Unit or Zowie). Plus there's the last name. As someone with a very non-standard surname, I feel like people should just learn to accept diversity. But that too is just IMHO Kid'sll notice his last name for sure though.

Diablo, kids still get teased, of course, although the school does take it more seriously these days (every year they have a couple school-wide meetings about bullying, for one). But yeah, they still tease about most things. I'm just saying that around here, kids wouldn't bat at eyelash at the name Ignatius Cake.

I'm kind of curious about what the kid's middle name is.......

Well, all I will say is that both parents have nice, normal first names. If it were me, I would have realized that having the last name Cake is teasing fodder enough for my child to deal with. Adding a "unique" first name doesn't help. Especially if everyone calls him "Iggy." So "Icky Cake" might be the result.

My maiden name is something that lended itself to being butchered/twisted into a couple of rather uncomplimentary forms. It was a source, for me, of unpleasant childhood memories. In a world where diversity is accepted this name thing wouldn't be an issue for kids, but we don't live in that world yet.

There will always be mean, hurtful children who get pleasure out of teasing others for every little thing they can. They usually (but not always) turn into mean adults.
I guess people in the entertainment industry don't have these issues to worry about. Perhaps their kids go to private schools where odd names are cool..or a status symbol. I hope the parents know what they are doing.
I just hope VDO & Carin don't name their new baby some crazy name.

Well,I am at least glad he is healthy and we know she is coming back. Glad about that too. I doubt that VDO and Carin will go odd. The seem to be mainstream with names. Their son has a normal name and so does VDO's daughter. He knows what it is like out there, and I am sure they want their child to be known by their talent, not an unusual name. Younger parents seem to be enamored with that, like Apple. Pretty, but unusual.
I guess today it might not be as big a thing as when I went to school in the 60's and 70's. Our oldest son's name is Abraham and you would have thought he had 3 heads. He took teasing for that. He's 25 now and still tells me stories about kids teasing him. Today is different. Plus being a celebrity isn't easy, because you get people like us talking about you. They have to get a tough skin.
