This BBC updating of Sherlock Holmes will premiere on MASTERPIECE MYSTERY this Sunday night. I had the pleasure of seeing the first episode. It was one of the more fascinating and mesmerizing television programs I've seen. I was very skeptical when I first read about plans to update Holmes to the early 21st century, but the results are splendid. Martin Freeman is excellent as the physically and psychically wounded Dr. John Watson (injured while serving with the British forces in Afghanistan, just like Conan Doyle's character). Benedict Cumberbatch is astounding as Holmes. He's the best Holmes since Jeremy Brett, and I'm tempted to rank him at least among my five favorite Holmeses. I strongly recommend this series.

I agree with every word you have written Patcat. This is television at it's most superb. Only three episodes and each one excellent. Too difficult to choose which one I liked best! I had actually already recommended this to friends.
Sherlock was this summer's runaway, critical success and, due to public demand, the BBC have commissioned a second series.
Mark Gatiss who plays Sherlock's brother Mycroft, was one of the co-creators and writers. I really liked the on-screen text messages - so innovative.

Well, they both have curly black hair--btw, I think SH would be 100 percent sexier with a shorter hairdo. Other than that, I loved it. Bobby's a lot like SH except he makes his observations aloud, so Eames can keep up with him. Bobby probably has a broad3r working knowledge of things that he can draw on, while SH is mostly observation.

The pbs.org site has some terrific interviews with Benedict Cumberhatch, who plays Holmes, and the series' creators. You can also view the first episode, at least for a while.

I bought the Sherlock DVD box-set and in the special features you can play each episode with scene-by-scene commentaries by the writers and main stars. It is excellent as they discuss the ideas, locations, references to Conan Doyle’s original stories and funny anecdotes in the making of each episode. It is all very jocular and had me laughing. My point is that wouldn’t it be brilliant if they did this for the final season of LO:CI?
Btw, Sherlock won the TV Dagger in this year’s Crime Writer’s Association Crime Thriller Awards and Benedict Cumberbatch won Best Actor Award.

Gatiss confirms 'Sherlock' filming dateSherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss has has confirmed a start date for filming of the second series. It was first announced last August that the detective drama, which stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as a modern-day Holmes and Watson, will return for three more 90-minute stories later this year. In a new Twitter post, Gatiss wrote: "For those kindly asking, we start shooting the new series of Sherlock in May and will be back on TV in the Autumn." Back in October, co-producer Steven Moffat implied that the second run will introduce Holmes's love interest Irene Adler and depict the great detective's battle with his nemesis Mortiarty (Andrew Scott) at Reichenbach Falls. Martin Freeman recently revealed that he was almost forced to turn down a role in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit to film the new episodes. www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/s129/sherlock/news/a304101/gatiss-confirms-sherlock-filming-date.html
