Ooo. Some disappointment in this ep -- yes? It's flaws are obvious: too much exposition necessary to the story choking dialogue in almost every scene. Unsympathetic guest characters.
And yet:
VDO and Erbe once again attacked their material with relish. VDO performing his old tricks -- the lean, semi-lean, "dancing hands," the twinkle. Eames in her snarking glory. Goren restored as "the smartest person in the room." Goren in the suit. Lots of backstory references for long-term fans, signaling understanding and respect for the series by this season's writers.
Isn't that what (most of us) missed and longed for?
AL
P.S. I'm not Warren Leight's biggest fan but I don't "revile" him. Choosing him to write the shrink scenes was genius -- do we agree?
P.P.S. MJ, I don't think VDO was wearing a piece. What made you think so?

Revile as in general sentiment from others. His crown seemed disconnected from the rest of him, like a patch of color tacked on. Plus, if you see candid personal photos it looks receeding.
Love me some Warren Leight.

Random thoughts:
Warren Leight writing the shrink scenes- YaY!
Jeffries speaks! He had a line!
Loved the Lewis reference!
Nicole in a quick flashback was acceptable.
Nicole in the flashback wore a white blouse. Dr. Paula wore a similar white blouse.
New man Stan okay, but I miss Josh. I liked him.
Lots of lamps in the captains office. Joe likes golf.
Never got the appeal of Jeri Ryan...
New captain always looks like he is uncomfortable... like he needs to start eating Activia yogurt.

How many thought that the actress playing the victim's mother looked familiar? She's Tony Award-winning Michele Pawk, who (so memorably) played "Shari Frost" -- mother of Joey -- in "Cruise to Nowhere."

I recognized the mother immediately. Poor woman, she still can't get it right with her sons. Boring/or poorly written guest characters. Not a really good villain amongst them.

I'll have to watch it a second time to catch the whole plot (although I wasn't compelled by the episode to watch it again last night as I was last week). Remind me why the woman who was working with the victim to sabotage both companies decided to turn against him and kill him.

Overall I enjoyed the episode though I agree too much exposition was needed to explain the plot. One other thing that bothered me was that the dates for when this supposedly takes place is May 9th and 10th yet in two scenes there is clearly snow on the ground. I know I live in the south but is there really still snow in NY in May? Little details like that annoy me. Things I really liked was that great shot of Goren and Eames looking up at the building where Mark was thrown off and then the next shot was of them looking down from the top. The director for this season is really good. Did like the Murder on the Orient Express ending in where everyone is guilty I didn't see that coming, though I thought all along Rebecca (I think her name was) was guilty. Thought Goren and Mark's mothers interaction in lock-up was beautifully written and acted. Con't to love Goren and the shrinks sessions. Thought VDO looked extremely hot in those scenes ;D. Love him looking dressy causal! Loved the Lewis mention and I expected a Nicole reference and thought it was done well. At first was surprised he felt guilty about "pimping" his family out but on later reflection realized it is part of his whole guilt complex.

I liked the episode, but didn't love it...the only victim I really felt for was the 12 yr old girl. There were things though that I enjoyed in the episode:
The scene where Goren finally makes the cold mother shed some tears for her son. Her spending her life and sacrificing her son's life on all those "-isms" and Goren telling her they're all still out there.
In the captain's office when the guy talks about Goren being in Army Intelligence (letting Goren know he's investigated him) and Goren telling the captain that the guy was a Navy seal (right back at cha!) and discussing interrogation techniques.
The therapy sessions are great, well-conceived, well-written and very well-acted. The struggle for Goren to open up is expressed by D'Onofrio so well in the hesitancy of his speech, the lack of surety and confidence in his words. Standing there (ready to run?), he finally sits when Paula quietly, but firmly asks him to sit down.
I think that Goren has been thinking and asking himself lots of questions about his state of mind. He says in other episodes that he's asked himself if he is crazy. In Frame, in the box with Declan, he admits to thinking about guilt and blame when it comes to his family. For me, the saving grace in these sessions is that it gives Goren an opportunity to discuss his situation and thoughts with someone dispassionate and removed whose knowledge of psychology is as good or better than his own. Dr. Paula will have to stand up to the test.

As someone who doesn't revile Leight but certainly is not a fan, lol, yes, I am forced to agree with this. Clearly this is Leight's forte, and if he can take the part of this seasons that I was most nervous about and most resistant to and turn it into the highpoints of two episodes for me? Yep, that's genius. And he managed to incorporate Nicole without making me want to throw something at my screen - if it wasn't genius before, it is definitely genius now. I do love the brevity of the scenes because they make me want more. I hope I don't get more, that could be dangerous, but I like that I want more. I think these scenes, incorporating all these aspects of Goren's backstory, his mom, Nicole, even Lewis, show a lot of respect for the long-time fans of this show and make me think USA and Dick Wolf meant it when they said this season was a gift for the fans. I liked the actual plot of this episode much more on repeated viewings, now that I'm not distracted by VDO chats, lol. I liked that EVERYONE was guilty of something. I liked that EVERYONE went to jail. I do like the new captain although skittles, he doesn't so much look uncomfortable to me as much as he seems to be constantly smirking and ready to start laughing at any moment... I even liked the mention of Goren's Army CID background. The other standout scene for me was Goren and the victim's mother in lockup. Really well done. Very much enjoying this season and happy that I finally found a place to discuss this show with people! ETA: VDO's hair. I definitely don't think he was wearing a hair piece. His hair is salt-and-pepper at this point and depending on the length and the cut, it tends to look darker or grayer. His hairline imo has always looked like it's receding - in the earlier seasons he always had that front piece that came down further than the sides. When it's close-cropped the hairline really shows. Personally, I like his hair better a little longer.

It was claimed that Season Ten was a return to the early seasons. The Goren ticks are there in abundance but the writing is very much sub-par. I’ve watched some episodes more than once from Season’s One and Two and there is just no comparison to the current level of writing. Last week’s episode, The Consoler, has been the best so far but nowhere near the league of early LO:CI.
If it hadn’t been for Jeri Ryan’s guest appearance, I would have been fast-forwarding for the few minutes of the Severin/Goren scene even though I’m not a fan of Warren Leight - but less is more!
As a writer himself, I’m sceptical that Vincent really believes his statement that the writing is “great” this season. There again, he’s not going to say otherwise as he wants a Season Eleven as he has a family and lifestyle to maintain - he’s developing his own future projects, so I don’t blame the guy for wanting USA to renew the show.
Still, with another five episodes surely the writing will improve as it can‘t get much worse.

Vincent writes? I didn't know this. I always assumed he didn't as when asked if he wanted to write or direct a CI eppy, he always said no. That being said, Vincent certainly is promoting the stuffing out of this season. He was asked his favorite episode of CI in the chat this week and he named Person of Interest as one of them but quickly added "I'm sure I'll have some favorites in these 8." He's just so...chipper, lol. I'm a bit depressed. CI is filming at a nightclub near my job today and I haven't seen ANYTHING.

Yes Kacesq - he co-wrote his slasher/musical (forgotten title) and I also think he’s co-writing the up-coming Mall.
Fingers crossed that you see SOMETHING soon!
Skittles, he’s promoting the show so he’s not going to say that the writing is **** . This, of course, is my opinion and he may actually think the writing is “great”.

I wasn't crazy about some of what Warren Leight did, but he's the writer to go to when it comes to family issues, especially father/son. He's got a good track record in dealing with that sort of thing, and I'm enjoying the psych scenes a lot.
