Role brings order to goofy girl's life

SAMANTHA Buck is enjoying being unemployed.
After an extended guest role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Buck says her bank balance is now substantial enough to sustain her until she is offered another challenging role.
"I'd rather wait and fight and work hard for a project I love then just take a bunch of stuff – well, now that I am financially OK," Buck says.
"Before, I would do what actors do – wait tables, babysit and other odd jobs.
"But now, because of the show, that's the beautiful thing – I can actually have the luxury of saying no to something I don't want to do, which I haven't had before."
With Detective Eames (Kathryn Erbe) on desk duty and maternity leave, Buck's character – the ambitious Detective Bishop – has moved in to give Detective Goren (Vincent D'Onofrio) a run for his money as his new partner.
Ambitious and by-the-book, Buck's character at first finds it difficult to cope with Goren's crime-solving style, but the relationship evolves and he becomes her mentor.
Buck says she had a similar relationship with D'Onofrio off-screen. "He's amazing to watch and it was like I got paid to go to grad school," Buck says.
"I absolutely adore him and am a better actor after working with him because I'm less afraid to take chances."
Her most challenging role to date, Buck says playing Detective Bishop basically meant becoming her polar opposite. "The only think we had in common is that we are both neat freaks," she says.
"It was a difficult role for me because she is so type-A and reserved while I'm goofy and clumsy.
"She keeps her personal life personal and is very intelligent."'
The lighthearted Buck jokes that producers always made sure her scenes had few props in them because they were petrified she would break something or hurt herself.
A downtown New York theatre girl, among other feature films and theatre productions, the 27-year-old had a recurring role in the hit drama series Third Watch and guest starred in Sex and the City.
Buck found out she had scored the Law & Order part while watching a Yankees baseball game and celebrated with "beers and hot dogs". Since then, she says, it has been a dream run.
