On Saturday, October 9th, I was watching a documentary about the media and how they can interfere with police investigations and can exploit horrific crimes for profit. The piece pointed out examples of the way that the media zeroes in on certain crimes, milks them for all they are worth, and ignores crimes of the same nature because the victim or his/her family aren’t as interesting. The piece referred to the media as following a certain story in a pack while other stories go unnoticed.
There was a short interview with Rene Balcer about where the ideas for all the LO shows come from. I watched and made notes. I thought it was interesting.

From a TV Documentary on the Media and Murder E Channel
Rene Balcer said that although the shows’ major promos make the viewer think, for example, “Oh, yes! This is from the Ted Bundy case” or from some other well known crime, the truth is that the show starts there but then usually takes off in a different direction. Balcer said the attorney for a two teens accused of killing their newborn child sought an injunction to keep LO from airing a show that had two teens suspected of doing the same thing. However, as the LO story played out, the fictional teens were exonerated, so the real-life attorney changed his mind about the injunction.
According to Balcer, there have been times when the actual LO story of a crime or investigation leads real police depts.. to ask for LO’s background information/files from the episode. The police will say that they have a case that is exactly like the story plot, or else very similar, and the police want to read the plot, background and investigation info, etc. to see if the logic used in the story will help the police with the real-life crime they are investigation.
Wish I could have taped the interview with Balcer, but it came on without warning, and I thought I should listen.
