JUST when Law and Order: Criminal Intent fans were suffering from Detective Robert Goren withdrawal symptoms, the man himself turned up in Sydney yesterday.
Actor Vincent D'Onofrio, better know as the twitchy, quirky detective on Channel 10's top-rating series, arrived yesterday morning just in time to see the New Year in with his daughter.
Sporting sandals as he stepped off the flight, the star happily signed autographs for airport staff.
D'Onofrio, 43, is expected to spend at least a week here with his 11-year-old daughter Layla to former wife, Italian-born actor Greta Scacchi, who spent many years working in Australia.
Selecting Sydney as the place to be as the clock strikes 2005 was no accident - D'Onofrio lived at beachside Coogee with Scacchi for almost four years in the late '80s and early '90s.
D'Onofrio and Scacchi divorced more than 10 years ago and the family is now spread right around the world - D'Onofrio in New York, Scacchi and Layla in London and Layla's grandmother in Sydney.
He has taken the time to see Layla while he is on a break from filming and while Layla stays with her grandmother over the Christmas/New Year holiday period.
D'Onofrio made the same trip this time last year to catch up with Layla at her grandmother's, the pair "hanging out at Coogee" most of the time.
He has since remarried and divorced again and has another child living in New York.
