Well I know he put the weight on for Five Minutes Mr. Welles and I think I read somewhere him mentioning taking the weight off slower and healthier then in the past, and I've noticed the past couple episodes he is starting to be a lil more trim than at the beginning of the season. All I know is he is looking ALOT happier and not as tired as he was last season. The weight doesnt concern me, its those bags he was carrying.

Yes, he's said that in interviews - that he very much wants to stay behind the scenes in his everday life because he's shy but when he's performing it's somene else, the character, and he becomes the vessel.

Hi! Finally, I got the chance to see Grow, my first S5 ep. And to put it mildly, I am a practicing Nicole-hater. But this ep made me think a little. Already Great Barrier had reminded me, that a recurring nemesis is an interesting thing. And now I am thinking: Maybe I wouldn't have hated Nicole if they had made her less like a female, psychopathic version of Goren. She's always been credited as highly intelligent, which I had trouble to believe. Now I'm thinking: Yes, they should have made her a killer, and not the dumbest, sure. A troubled childhood? Maybe, unsure. But wipe away that stupid self-sufficient smirk and replace it with occasional, real remorse… and you might have a character who's less annoying than NW. And BTW, I liked the buddha. I do not remember who found it out of character for Nicole, but I think it fits. She could be a Buddhist. I've met people who practice Buddhism because it doesn't have commandments, or at least doesn't enforce them. Cool, that would be very fitting for Nicole, who does what she wants. But that librarian made me feel *very* upset. A woman in her mid-thirties is middle-aged? O no!

Interesting comments, Rosemary!
I like that N/E is unapologetic for the bad she's done. It can get soapy to see the bad guys showing remorse. I like to see Goren and Nicole as radical counterpoints to each other although in Grow she was such a loser - no match at all for Goren.
Buddhist monks were originally warriors so they were a bit warlike but they have nothing on Nicole!

I didn‘t have on mind true Buddhism, as it is practiced in Asia and by some people in Europe, but to Buddhism as a „fashion religion“. It is difficult to explain, but some people choose this religion, because it seemingly doesn‘t demand anything, put a Buddha figure on their tv set and continue their lives, indifferent to God and/or fellow human beings.

I loved 'Grow' because it gave me the chance to see Nicole kind of get beaten at her own game. It was almost funny to see her reaction when Goren made her realize it.

Wow--guys, I was born and bred a true buddhist, so please, easy on the buddhism....I wouldn't say bashing, but you know....it may be a "fashionable" religion here, but trust me, for those who actually practice it on a daily basis some of the comments on these threads would be....well, insulting.....and shocking.... But enough of that, and more on topic--I do remember the statue, but I never got how Bobby made the connection from the statue to Nicole. Was it because she was in a Thai prison? I mean, she never discussed religion (or lack thereof) with Bobby in A-T, APOI or GB did she? And just to finish off--Nicole's actions would never, ever be condoned by Buddhism!

Grow was not the best episode I've seen although it did accomplish one great thing and that was it made me like Nicole

2011:
The comments were uninformed and drowning in ignorant assumption but I don't think we were bashing the religion. They were commenting on the motives some people, certainly not the truly devout, have for following a religion.
There is a zero-tolerance policy on this board against inciteful, derogatory comments that is vigourously upheld by not just the board moderators but its members too. But almost all subjects, including religion are open for discussion. If we are uninformed feel free to educate us.

First of all, I respect Buddhism, as I respect every true religion. And I‘m not ignorant either. The only reason I know more religiopaths than traditonally devout adherents is that I carried out my survey in a prison, among convicted criminals. You‘ll be surprised how many seemingly religious people you‘ll find there. As a student of comparative religious studies I go out from German theologian Rudolf Otto‘s point of view, that „The idea of the Holy“ (also the English title of his most famous book) is to be seperated from morals and ethics. I somehow defended the traditional notion, that true religion always incorparates a set of morals and/or ethics. And I documented the „counter-move“, which i named „modern idolatry“. In my thesis I claimed that this „modern idolatry“ (which has nothing to do with icons or statues) occurs among adherents of any known religion, including the Eastern religions. I was attacked for this. The orthodox theologians as well as the „modern“ scholars who taught me that all flaws of Western religion are unknown in the East (which I all managed to disprove). The opinion of the typical „modern Christian idolater“ is: I can do what I want, because Jesus forgives everything. The opinion of the typical „Eastern modern idolater“ has already been given on this thread. Why did I label them „idolaters“? Because they worship what they made themselves. Their own self-built over-ego... I suggest that if somebody has further objections, he/she should send me a private message.

This episode made me hate Nicole even more but worse, it made me lose a load of respect for Goren, for reasons I stated before but I promise not to digress. Well, it's not so much Nicole herself that annoys me, it's the storyline itself ...I'm digressing... I think it was me who mentioned that it would be odd for Nicole to have a Buddha. I found it odd that it's significance to Nicole was not explained. Why would she have it? Was it worth money? A token that she stole? Did it bring back warm, fuzzy memories of Thailand?

Warm, fuzzy memories of Thailand? Maybe. Maybe she stole it from a lover (whom she later disposed of?), who knows. Some Buddhas are indeed worth a fortune, but would such an artifact be on a keychain, were it is constantly rubbed against the keys… I also have a "religious keychain" and it doesn't look good anymore because of the keys. I agree, NicoleMarie, that it should have been explained. Now it's only left to speculation.

Hmmm... maybe they didn't explain it because their intention was for us to draw our oen conclusions about it? Or perhaps it will be explained in a later episode?

CI does that a lot with Nicole; they leave too much to speculation. I see she tends to wear jewerly and I always wonder if it's hers or ts significance to her. There are other things that I cannot think of right now.

Nicole‘s story lines often involve expensive stuff. When she first appeared, these expensive shoes, later rich husbands (I think Nicole would regard husbands as „stuff“), the diamonds Ella stole… And she likes to wear jewelry, that‘s true. Maybe some items were gifts from former lovers, who knows. Generic disposable lover: „You should give me back the necklace I gave you, now that it‘s over.“ Nicole: „No, I won‘t.“ GDL: „The person I gave it to is no longer the person you are. I cannot live knowing that you still own something from me.“ Nicole: „I think I can help you.“ *Splash* Nicole crushes GDL‘s larynx. Sorry, couldn‘t resist, the situation I figured out was too funny. She doesn‘t seem to be the serial killer/sex offender type who keeps souvenirs from victims.
