WOW.
Initial response--terrific episode, although I could have done without the final twist.
But the whole episode was worth watching just for Kathryn Erbe's terrific performance on that witness stand. Would someone please give this woman some kind of award?

Patcat, you summed it up wonderfully! Wow, indeed. And a very big wow to Kathryn Erbe. Just when I think the show can't possibly get any better...

"Wow!" is it. They used everyone, everyone was great and a great story. Wow.
PS Digresser- What is that quote from?

What a great show! This one had everything. I love the way they blended everyone's story into a perfect fit. I was just beginning to think Eames was left out of the judge's wrath and then she took the witness stand. It was heart wrenching to watch her. And how noble Goren's response.
Everyone shined! (Even Logan) This will go down as my favorite. Two hours of excellence.

Hi Everyone! I'm new here (this is my first post) and I just wanted to say that this was a wonderful ep. Eames' testimony was so wrenching, and Kathryn's acting was superb. Like was said above, I would have watched the entire episode just for that one scene. great show!

By the way, I found what was said to Goren in the bar to be particularly funny, as well as his reaction. So many goodies (large and small) in this episode.
Sorry, lisianthus, I had planned to give proper credit where it's due but the quote started to run too long in the box. It's said by Sherlock Holmes to Lestrade, (which is especially humorous as they're in Lestrade's office) in The Young Sherlock Holmes. I was watching it as I created my account here and it just seemed to fit.

My initial response is UGH. This did not warrant two hours worth. Plus, there was too much histronics. I thought I was watching SVU or "As the Police Plaza Turns". Then again, I have a splitting headache and need to watch this again.
I consider "histronics" fluff. It works well in SVU but not in CI.

This was definitely he best 'episode' this season. I loved how everything fit so well together. The problem with Goren's mother and Eames on the witness stand? I loved it. I actually enjoyed having the four detectives work together. Geez, I am just really glad I taped this one.
ETA: I actually like the 'histronics'. They gave the episode something...more. IMO, anyway.

Ditto to all above on KE's performance. Plus, I LOVED seeing Connie again! He's still my favorite of all the CI villains.
That exchange with Goren was brilliant. "You don't want me sitting too close, I might have to hit you again."
Oh, snap!
But Goren counters well, reminding Connie of the self control and patience he's shown while in prison -- the self control and patience Goren made him lose, and that the two of them are the ones that sent him there. If there was time, it would have been great to get a nice pause on the look on Connie's face there.

Loved it! I have to admit, the first 30 minutes dragged, but once the "investigation" got rolling, well then it really took off. I couldn't believe they brought Connie back! What a neat surprise. I thought everyone did a great job. My only complaint with Sciorra is her delivery. I can't hear her half the time. But she had the best snark with "those guys couldn't stop an asthma attack."

Kathryn Erbe was fantastic in her scene on the witness stand--brava!--but I am bummed that her deep dark past dug up by the judge relates to Goren. So she didn't hit it off with him right away, seriously considered a new partner, and realized it would work after all. While I thought it was a great subtle tribute to their partnership, especially the near-tears (bordered on soapy, but kudos for Erbe keeping it together) and Goren's eyes in the courtroom seats, we had a chance to learn about Eames and we didn't. I know Eames is our own little Watson, but sheesh, she did have a professional life before Goren came along, not to mention personal history. I was expecting--hoping for-- something about her deceased husband or her father or something like that. I did like her with Barek "Let's put them out of our misery", but what was it Goren mouthed to her on their way out?
Logan as a fan of Old Blue Eyes. Whoda thought?
Frances Goren. Gambling addict brother. In the context of the episode and the judge's take-no-prisoners aspect, I thought his scenes were handled well and not too over the top.
Another "Yeah Carver!" episode. What I'd give to be his legal assistant--no, not like that he's not like McCoy. But a calm, courteous, smooth professional who I would enjoy working with. (Plus, you get to hear that voice when he's on a roll in the courtroom...sorry, MGM.) Did you see his pat on the arm for Eames outside of the courtroom? He's always admired/respected her, without being patronizing.
Jamey Sheridan did a nice part with what he was given. While the length of the episode meant we saw more of his quick scenes, it was nothing too special content wise. But he's always great with facial expressions and attitude. Could we please work Deakins in more? He's only had one big episode that I remember. (Maybe the writers are saving up for February sweeps, is there a chance of our getting an Eames-centric and Deakins-centric episodes? A girl can dream.)
I thought that the mothers of the victims were absolutely fantastic actresses. As mentioned above, Bethany's mother at the salt marsh--god a mercy, that poor woman.
Colm Meany--while I'm disappointed we didn't get to hear the brogue, I can understand not wanting to explain a New York judge with an Irish accent. It wasn't completely eradicated, but then New York does have those ethnic neighborhoods, which might be an unspoken understanding. What a miserable buttwipe of a jerk, well played to Mr. Meaney in that I hated his character's guts. I got scared at "Iago" that he was gonna start beating. What was the point of taking his shirt off in the kitchen--my first thought was "Didn't your mama raise you better than that?" But then, this man was way beyond shamin' his mama.
Connie! While I didn't gush all over him the first time, I thought it a cool touch that he came back. "I B***h-slapped that detective in his own interrogation room." They must have seen that people wanted an encore. But when Goren told him that the girls never turned on him, with that smiling, half-admiring inflection, I wonder if it was an act, buttering up the ego to persuade him to assist.
All I can think of for now. I kept getting distracted so I'll have to review tape at some point.

I was worried from the interview with Vincent that we were going to see too much of a personal side, but I don't think we got to find out anything new other than that his brother has a gambling problem and Bobby doesn't help him, right?

This is my first post here. I have to say this was one heck of an episode. I believe I was screaming at the TV when the "cop" showed up at the institute where Bobby's Mom is. Therefore I missed where she indeed is, and where the place is located...anyone else catch this? I have to say I loved VDO's performance when he got the call about his mother having a break and his reaction to that as well as KE's reaction to the Judges lawyer bringing up the letter of 5 years ago! That was some damn fine acting on both their parts! (Emmy??? I wish) Though as to Eames dead hubby in what episode was that brought up in...not one that I remember, nor do I remember Connie...which was he in? (I missed a few episodes here and there )

Hi, E. McCoy. Lots of new folk tonight! Actually, I'm still pretty new here myself, so please someone correct me if I don't have my facts straight. Goren's mother stays at Caramel Ridge Center. This has been mentioned once or twice before, though off hand I can only recall "Anti-thesis". The information on Eames' husband comes, I think, not from the show but from a few interviews with cast and crew (important cast and crew, not craft services gopher #3 ). Connie is from "Sound Bodies" and he DOES hit Goren. If it helps you to remember, it's a Bishop episode. Hope this helps (Funny, the closed caption says "Caramel" but the sign behind the receptionist says "Carmel". I agree, tinkerbell, two IS better than one!)

Bobby's mom is at Carmel Ridge Center (there was no mention of where it's located,) Connie was in Sound Bodies (the one with the teen sex parties on the island,) and Eames' hubby has never been mentioned in any episode I was screaming at the tv when the mock Nancy Grace (who totally deserves to be mocked) jumped out of the limo to get in the shot of Bethany's body being found instead of doing anything to help or console that poor mother. (oops, I see digresser and I posted the same info at the same time! but it's better to get double help than none at all )
