And they have a good reason, too. Not many can see past his fanatical religious preaching to whatever character he's supposed to be. He's just that crazy mo-fo who jumped on Oprah's couch, and bashed American Sweetheart, Brook Shields, for getting help with PPD.
I see the same type of stuff is going on with Mel Gibson. I lost all admiration for him during his fanatical "The Passion" days. Now, he can try to blame it on the booze all he wants, but everyone knows that tequila doesn't make a person anti-semitic, it only makes it harder for fanatical bigots, like Gibson, to hide it.
I would be happy to never see either of them again in anything. It's hard enough for me to forget an actor enough to enjoy a good story. With those two, it's simply impossible.

I think that religion is a very personal thing you keep at home. When you mix it with your job you end up giving lessons and nobody likes that. Be what you want but be it at home.
I´ve learned that those who show it more are those who practise it worse. It´s like those parents that tell their kids not to eat cake before dinner but when they are alone sometimes they have cake instead of dinner. They are the adults so they can break the rules and they are still right because they are the parents. People that give too many religious lessons think that they can break them because they are still right.
I always suspect people that make their beliefs so obvious, I tend to think they hide something.

As a sort of practicing Catholic, I try not to be judgmental of others' beliefs. After all, we believe that bread and wine becomes the body and blood of Christ. But Scientology strikes me as dangerous, especially with its rejection of psychiatry and psychiatric drugs. Psychiatry saved my father's life, and I've seen how some drugs can really give people better lives. What Cruise did on the TODAY show was horribly irresponsible.

I'm also Catholic, and still go to church fairly often, but not every week anymore. My parish is very liberal, though, and so am I. I make communion, but only when I'm hungry -- a little bit of Jesus can really hit the spot, especially after partying all night at my favorite Gay bar ;D
(I hope all the other Catholics are laughing and not trying have me ex-communicated right now.)
Anyway, Patcat, I completely agree with you about scientology. It's not what they believe that bothers me, it's their extremism. Extremism = Bad for humanity. It's separatist, discriminatory, and generally erosive to peace and unity.

Another catholic here and when I was 18 I decided to stop going to church if it isn´t for turistic purposes. I did it because I got tired of being told that I would go to hell if I did this or that and being told by a group of people that found child abuse acceptable (among other nice ideas about sex).
I think that extremism is very dangerous, no matter the religion.
I´m sorry if I seem too angry (I´m not) but I hate when someone tries to impose their thoughts. Unless I´m doing something illegal or immoral, don´t bother me. And what´s that with psychiatry? I love my psychiatrist, he helped me a lot when I needed it.

Trisha, you had me at.... (I hope all the other Catholics are laughing and not trying have me ex-communicated right now.) LMAO! No such thoughts from this lapsed catholic. Once a catholic, always a catholic. Even if you're mostly a lapsed catholic, I can't get those early lessons out of my head - and I don't think I'd want to even if I could. I think faith is an essential element of our psyches, but anything carried to extremes is harmful. Cruise can be or act out whoever and whatever he wants, as long as he also realizes there are consequences to his actions. Celebrity does not cancel out responsibility. He could win back the public's good thoughts, he's had them for most of the last 20 years, but for the first time in his life, he'll have to work at it. It's a shame that whatever he's going through (mid-life crisis?) is so public.

Yeah, you grow up as a catholic and it is stuck in your head forever. And don't worry Trisha, this catholic is not offended. I love people with sense of humor and come on, I'm sure you see more angel wings in those gay bars than people in church.

I believe that Mel Gibson was on fire for the Lord. When he made "The Passion of the Christ". So he has some issues.....
I grew up Catholic, and was taught (at least what I got out of it from the nuns) that their where 3 religions. Catholic, Protestant, and the Jews. The Jews where God's chosen people so we need to remember that, and be nice to them.. The Prostestants well, stay away from them. They are not the true religion. They were fakes. As the years had gone by, I noticed other Catholic kids, turned adults referred to the others Christian denominations as “those protestants” aka "Prostitute" is what I heard. It wasn’t until I was in or out of high school, that I even knew of Muslims Buddist, or Hindus.
Not sure where I am going with all of this......
For a long time, I didn’t want to offend anyone, cause I know most people don’t’ like to talk about relilgion, but I made myself a prisoner within my own soul.... and I wont do that anymore. I am a 'sinner', and I have my issues. I am not trying to force my faith on to anyone. I am just being myself, which is a "work in progress" I have belonged to many different demonations, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist. and I will most likely go back to the Catholic Church....cause I like their service and their hymns......I am a Christian first....and what ever church I happen to be attending second.
As for Tom Cruise and Sciencetology......If I had ever had an interest in him as an actor. I would have wanted to learn more about his religion. Sorry, I never cared for him as an actor, let alone a leading man......thats pretty lame of me I guess, not wanting to learn more about his religion. Cause I would like to understand all of the other faiths....

I have way too much experience with drug/alcohol abuse, and I can tell you, "In vino veritas" means nothing. The stuff makes you crazy, and people do and say things under the influence that they would never, ever do sober. I don't approve in any way what Gibson did, and this sad event is a reminder that we are all only human.

I was taught that catholicism was the only truth and soon I discovered it wasn't, I got a protestant boyfriend and I thank for the variety. But I still like them christian though.
I wonder why I waste my time with Tom Cruise, the last time I bought a ticket for one of his movies was Cocktail! the rest have been seen on the public tv so this guy is not making a lot of money thanks to me.

But he did have ties with the Saudis, too ... Some of his foreign allegiances were formed before he even ran for pres. But, that's another subject altogether.
Cruise and religion got mixed because that's the main reason he got canned from Paramount; his fanatical religious preaching and bizarre behavior regarding Katie Holmes, which is also tied up in his fanatical practice of scientology.
I can't think of a religion that doesn't have zealots. It's not any particular faith, or religion as a whole, that I take issue with, just the people who take it to the extreme by castigating, oppressing, and/or otherwise hurting other people who don't think and feel the same way. So, even though it was probably just to cover their own butts, I give some props to Paramount and ABC for splitting from those guys.

I'm a really bad person--I've got "The Inquisition" from Mel Brooks' HISTORY OF THE WORLD running through my mind. If God doesn't have a sense of humor, I'm doomed.

Tom Cruise should stick to what he knows and does best--mindless harmless action flicks like Top Gun and the Mission Impossible movies. Anything requiring intelligent thought and discussion, most especially something so deeply personal as one's religious beliefs, is beyond his grasp. He should mind his own business and butt out of the personal decisions of others. Which is good practice generally, as I believe most of the world's problems would resolve themselves or not even occur if everyone (especially governments) would MYOB and stop pointing fingers of superiority and/or disapproval at others.
