Well, the dance was quite fun last night! I was a little late getting down because of class, but I spent yesterday afternoon safety-pinning tassel/fringe to long strips of cloth. My roommate is wonderfully creative/design-minded, so she rigged up some elastic and velcro to comfortably hold the curtain rod in place. Not that too many people knew what I was--those who got it loved it, others thought I was just a set of curtains--it loses something in the fiftieth explanation of "Have you seen Carol Burnett's version of Gone With the Wind? Have you seen Gone With the Wind?" Oh well, it was lots of fun, even if I did have to cover the tips with my hand to keep from gouging people.
This weekend is going to be insane. Chorus concert, two papers to work on, aaaack!
Later all, take care.

Even with the snoring - a much better roommate than the sullen old one, eh?
Here comes Halloween! I can't wait.

Catbird--what's the selection in your choral concert? What voice do you sing? Did you get lots of candy? Did you see the great pumpkin? BTW, "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown!" is on ABC tonight. It's the 40th, can you believe it? I must be older than I thought...

I LOVE the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. I remember being allowed to stay up late and watch in my PJ's Didn't know it's 40 too, me and my favorite Charlie Brown are the same age.

I brought a bowl of candy corn to work in honor of Halloween. At first, everyone said, "Why did you bring that? Its nothing but sugar." However, it was all gone in record breaking time. My coworkers are so transparent.

The Great Pumpkin is on tonight? Oh yay! I brought my DVD with me, but maybe I can hang out with someone in their room. (At the dance last night we had little ghost cookies, and the guy who made them made a couple Charlie Brown ghosts with tons of eyeholes all over! I could have hugged him.) Yes, much better roommate than two years ago! (My mother refuses to mention the name of the sullen one, referring to her as "The B***h". She didn't butt in or anything, but she hated seeing me upset.) I figure in 4 years of dorm life, three of my roommates have been terrific, so that's pretty good odds. Yeah, everybody has some quirks that'll drive you insane when living together, but we get along really well. Sarahlee, technically I'm a mezzo soprano (read one more blah nondescript middle range) but I generally sing Alto I in choir. I usually like the part, but I wish I could still get the low notes in the she-male, bass-clef range. Do you do much music? We have a dress rehearsal tomorrow, and our concert is Sunday. THe lineup: - "Laudate Dominum" (Egil Hovland), tricky, and we have a tendency to rush or go flat, but it sounds cool and layered and intense.
- "A Prayer in Spring" and "Spring Pools" (someone in the department arranged poems by Robert Frost), simple and pretty
- "Les sirenes" (Lili Boulanger music) French piece that's the song of the Sirens as they lure the sailors to their deaths. Minor key, haunting rounds, spooky. We've got a great soloist on this.
- "Alleluia" (Randall Thompson) one of my favorites, our director said it's performed pretty frequently. Lots of building, dynamic contrasts, just gorgeous.
- "Gloria" (Orban) my other favorite--fast and exciting, triumphant piece. Gets a little high in some places, but when we get it right it's one of those Yeah!!! kinds of pieces.
Sorry to babble, I get excited. As to Halloween candy, people are starting to set the bowls outside their doors--some chocolate, gum, or a random grab bag. I personally love Sweet Tarts/Smarties. --Catbird

Ooh, voices and voice ranges. A friend of mine can hit those super high notes - there's a name for them that I can't think of right now. I never could do them and I'm jealous of her!

Yeah, everybody has some quirks that'll drive you insane when living together, but we get along really well. Exactly, it's great that you have such a good attitude about it...and when you are feeling blue about your roomate situation, remember this tale of The Roomate From Hell: My best friend thought she had a nice enough roomate. They supported and consoled each other as various random items began being stolen from their room. Cd's, wallets, bed comforters....even my friend's retainer! All the items were found in a dumpster out behind the building. Then my friend's ID and pictures of her family and friends were found cut up into little pieces outside their door. The whole thing got very scary and stalker-creepy. Long scary story short, the WHOLE thing was orchestrated by the roomate, who it turns out was completely out of her mind. :o

The Cardinals won the World Series! Time to collect on a few "friendly" wagers. ;D
Mrs. T update: today was the last of her "full" radiation treatments. She has one more week, 5 treatments total, of "booster" treatments. She's a bit more sore and fatigued than usual, but she sees the light at the end of the tunnel. With a little rest this weekend she'll be ready to finish things off next week.

Oh that's great. Sorry she's hurting, but you're almost there! Hugs to the both of you--any idea how y'all can celebrate when you're through?

Catbird, we haven't decided yet what to do when Mrs. T is done with radiation. A lot will depend on her mood and how she feels, so we're keeping our options open for now.

Yeah, I can understand wanting to rest and get over the treatments before going wild.
Rehearsal went alright today, I got my response for Psychology fo Religion posted (with half an hour to spare!) last night, and I just got back from the drug store with black hose for the concert tomorrow. I should be working but I'm feeling lazy.
As I'm here I've noticed for the umpteenth time that my room is in a peculiar place of the dorm so that the wind really does moan when it comes by! First place I've been where it does that, normally it's just a whoosh and the leaves rustle but for some reason the wind ricochets around the building parts outside the window. Janethyland, for some reason the atmospheric moaning and spooky "ooh" sound made me think of you! (Even stranger to hear this and look out the window to a bright blue sky!) Sorry, just had to share that.

PS: Metella, I also thought of you during my history class this past week. THe professor advised that we make our thesis statements "pithy". I managed to keep from giggling out loud in the middle of class, but I swear to you my notes now have a little line drawn to the margins with "Hee! Metella!" written at the side. Man, this board really is starting to dominate my life!

techguy--congrats, it's almost over! You and Mrs. T still need our best vibes, blessing on both your heads...
Catbirdie--yes, I'm an experienced singer. I was a music majour in college (didn't get to finish) but I now get to sing professionally. (I am blessed!) Right now I am rehearsing Vicorian Christmas Carols for a group I sing with every year. I get to sing at the best parties and shopping malls in the tri-county area! You'd think I'd be sick unto death of carols, but no, I love it. The mere fact someone will pay me to sing still tickles me .
I used to be a soprano, now I sing mostly 2nd or alto. I grieved for years over the loss of my upper range (I know it sounds silly, but other singers will understand) and I still miss it. It turns out though, that I get more gigs with my alto/mezzo voice.

god, can you imagine how a prof who reads 100's of papers really needs some pithy in his life! Thanks for sharing! Nice to know my cries of anguish are heard For those new members who feel they hold minority opinions, my biggest stand outside the group is the call for pithy posts. Will I never shut up about it? Now I am in someone's head playing backup singer to the prof. snicker
