Whoa, that was a good one.....
Does anyone remember the last line, by the way? (Logan's)
And what does Dramma Giocoso mean?
"I never thought I'd envy the dead"..... Mike Logan in the morgue--hilarious guys, hilarious!
Yeah, this one was good guys....very cool!! Can't wait for Whoopi to come on in May......

Logans last words to Barek where something like:
"do you think she is in there crying for her daughter too?", then a pause "I don't either."
I loved Bareks hat in the first scene, Do you think any of her hats will ever be up on EBay? I wanna buy one! ;D Oh it was snowing and she was wearing white shoes, I thought after Labor Day, the white shoes are suppose to be put away until Easter
and M.E. Rogers has a pretty nice voice too, Logan was funny there too!
Great show from beginning to end.

I believe Logan questioned the likelyhood of any of Gillian's tears being for her daughter. And I agree about this episode. It was a lot of fun

Oh my gosh, I loved it!!! I thought Logan and Barek interacted nicely, and the performance by Alice Krige was amazing. (Was she dubbed?) Even Reinhardt did good conveying the arrogant egotistical conductor with a God complex but not making it cartoony.
I had been hoping that Courtney B. Vance would get to make a Paganini reference ("Red October" shout-out). But I got something even better instead. Rogers likes opera! And she confirmed what fans have been hoping for years, that she and Lennie were an item! I literally jumped up and down and squealed and clapped like a seventh-grade cheerleader on Pixie Stix at that.
(You know, it was so Twilight Zone: when she was humming in the morgue I sighed "If only Lennie were there for a duet." And then, two scenes later, yes!!! I expected a bit more of a reaction from Logan, but professionals in front of the suspect and all that--and would it really have been a surprise?)
Sorry to be so silly, but after "West Wing" --sniffle, Leo-- I needed something with lighter moments. Thank God I never saw a L&O approach the death of Lennie, otherwise I really would be a puddle.
Sorry, I'm hyper. That's what stood out. But even fan tidbits aside, I thought this was very well-written, a well-done plot with terrific performances. Bravi!! I am SO taping this rerun on USA. --Catbird
PS: As a semi-musician myself (yes, chorus counts) I feel it necessary to point out that while there are, of course, egos to spare, there actually do exist some very nice conductors; I just finished singing under one. Pleasant ones who do their best to make you feel welcome, understand that choirs and orchestras have different approaches, and will try to ease the transition without getting too snippy or full of themselves. That said, there are of course the off-beat techies, divas, and eccentrics aplenty. I've never been a member of the artsy-fartsy circles, but I've certainly been around several.
I also loved the uni policeman as a fan of opera. Bust them stereotypes! I mentioned on the upcoming episodes that I'm not exactly up on opera, but I love it when they take the unexpected route: a blue-collar working class guy as opposed to some snooty millionaire.

I missed this one but it looks like it was 'a comedic opera with tragic overtones.' I hope it runs again soon.

Repeat airs on USA network Saturday, April 22, 11:00 PM. I don't know if/when NBC will rerun.
Sirenna: is that the definition of "dramma giocoso"? If so, highly appropriate! Work those titles!
One little thing niggling at me: when Reinhardt finds out about Gillian's disease, he screams that "I want an anullment". Isn't anullment related strictly to Catholic church weddings? Their ceremony looked like judge at city hall to me. (But I loved the lawyer's expression during that! A minor character, but props to the actor for nailing a persona.)
Also, I loved Courtney B. Vance's expressions in his limited screentime. That satisfied little That was TOO easy smirk when Barek needled a reaction out of Reinhardt at the first interrogation. The exasperation and annoyance when Deakins handed him the file--and is it me or was Deakins holding back a chuckle when he pulled it out of the drawer? "I've been watching too much opera." I love Jamey Sheridan.

"Dramma Giocoso" is an example of an episode without a lot of false leads or red herrings, but is no less complex for it. And based on my initial impressions immediately after viewing it, now I have a new favorite Logan/Barek episode. That's two in a row, so things are looking up insofar as my connecting with this new MCS team.
From my post in the April 2006 episodes thread about tonight's show: dramma giocoso = "jocular drama" which has a tendency to mix characteristics of opera seria (serious opera) and opera buffa (comic opera). This one really shows L/B working together in top form to provide the opera buffa counterpoint to the opera seria tragedy of a mother killing her own daughter to get the "love of her life" to marry her. My only quibble with Barek in this one is she mumbles the setup line to Logan's "They don't pay me enough" punchline. So unless someone here can enlighten me, I'll have to wait to view my tape to get what I missed.
There are lots of wonderful scenes and moments. I felt a warm glow when ME Rodgers says Lennie Briscoe took her to Reinhardt's production of "Aida" five years ago. I also chuckled at the cop groupie practically worshipping the star soprano and getting giddy and proud when he shows Logan and Barek the autographed photo of her.
There are also lots of great one-liners too, including Logan's reference to to rooftop parties as "a frat house on Viagra." I also enjoyed Reinhardt's lawyer throwing in his "Vulcan mind meld" zinger which further reinforces the Star Trek influence with Alice Krige's presence. And Deakins' quip, "I can't picture an egomaniac like Reinhard giving her sponge baths" is yet another example of the opera buffa offered up for our enjoyment.
Speaking of Ms. Krige, she and Julian Sands are wonderfully wicked here, each using and being used by the other. Their symbiotic leechiness toward one another, culminating in a sham marriage, is a major highlight of this episode for me. I almost feel sorry for Krige's character Gillian Booth, but Logan's final line to Barek, "Do you think any of those tears are for her daughter?...I didn't think so either" is a jolt back to reality as to where my sympathies should lie. "Dramma Giocoso" gets a two thumbs up BRAVO! from me.

Wow, this was such a fun episode. Reminded me a lot of the episode Unrequited -- tragic story with lots of comic overtones.
Alice Krige was fantastic. If that was her voice, she's an amazing singer.
And Rogers was great! Woohoo about Rogers and Lennie!!! Made my night! Can't wait to see it again.

I add a Bravo Bravo to this episode as well - I loved it - Just loved it.
It seems CI is in some ways similar to Dramma Giocoso itself - I have never watched a program that combines the elements of Comedy and intense and heartbreaking drama so poignantly.
Wonderful performances all around.

This was MY favorite episode so far with Logan and Barak.. I found it quite entertaining, and really enjoyed just about everything about the episode. The comic relief lines were great,. and the acting was the best I've seen on any of the Logan episodes....I can't wait to view it a second time, as I usually miss a few things while taping the first time. I enjoyed this episode, and agree with the previous posters that both Krige and Sands were excellent. While I greatly liked both Barek and Logan in this one, I couldn't help but think the presence of Goren and Eames might have fit better, what with the high element of snark and the resonance children caring for parents might have for Goren.

Janet: You know me and titles! Here's what I found online:
"Dramma giocoso" means "happy tragedy" or "tragic comedy" which was a term coined by Mozart. "Don Giovanni" is a dramma giocoso" in two acts. The overture pre-quotes the music from the finale of the opera, (which was not done again until Verdi's "La Traviata") and an overture that has no finish but dissolves into the show itself.

Adding to the title discussion, I found this on a website for the Pacific Opera:
dramma giocoso (joe-KOH-zoh) An opera which combines serious elements, enacted by aristocratic personnages, with comic relief, played out and commented upon by earthier peasant stock. The most famous example of dramma giocoso is Mozart's DON GIOVANNI, although the composer himself never actually called it such - only Lorenzo da Ponte, the librettist, did.
I love the LOCI titles!!

I have finally found an episode with Barek in it that I liked her all the way. Take away the goofy hats and it was a great episode !! I thought this episode showed alot of movement in the right direction for these two, shows that they do make a good set of partners. Great interaction and a lil snarkiness !! 2 thumbs up for this episode, cant wait to see it again to catch what I missed.
