Rogers likes opera! And she confirmed what fans have been hoping for years, that she and Lennie were an item! I literally jumped up and down and squealed and clapped like a seventh-grade cheerleader on Pixie Stix at that. So did I, my husband thought I had gone insane, I was giddy with delight! ;D For me, that was such a fantastic little moment/tidbit, it could have made the whole episode worthwhile even if it had been a stinker....but it was a very good episode. The story was so well done (it's nice to have a simpler plot once in awhile), it was interesting all the way through and the hour really went by fast! The guests were great, and I am always happy to see Julian Sands, his turn as The Maestro was so well balanced between being completely over the top dramatic and yet still believable.

It was an especially apt title since Logan and Barek were in some manner treated as the peasants/outsiders. I have to admit I'm not an opera fan, but it seemed like they just egged on Julian Sands' (spelling) character for the fun of it-particularly Barek. I also gave it two thumbs up for being amusing and there was one little twist that I didn't see coming.
Boy, am I naive. I thought Brisco had taken her to the opera to thank her for some a rush report or something. But, Brisco did appear to do well with the ladies. It was just so funny the way she glowed when she sang.

Bravo Bravo This one I really enjoyed and found it to be one of the best I've seen besides Wee Small Hours....Logan was good and so was Barak. This is the first time I haven't wished her GONE during an episode. The story was good...fantastic acting...enough comedic lines and just a plain enjoyable show..... Thumbs up this time... Shadow

This episode was terrific. Fun, twisty and full of good one-liners. I used to tell my husband that nobody could do that combination better than Goren and Eames, but Logan and Barek sure are coming close!!

Hey guys, Did the teaser for this episode remind anyone of "Happy Family," where they showed the boy singing after he killed his father? When I saw the mother singing, I actually did wonder if she was the murderer...and so she was! Just thought it was interesting....

Oh, also wanted to say something about Stephanie Sengupta, the writer of this one. She's one of my favorites. Okay, only since she did that great interview on this site, but even before that, I liked her episodes. Now I squeel when I see her name on the screen. But, honestly, folks, she never does disappoint. And this was, by far, the best Logan and Barek episode I've seen. And it DID remind me of that episode from season three or four, Unrequited. The comedy was very much in a similar style. So maybe the writers do have something to do with the whole feel of an episode!!!!!

I found an episode with Barek in it that I liked her all the way. Take away the goofy hats and it was a great episode !! Thats what makes her so charming!!! plus those white shoes in the winter. She is odd, and its refreshing seeing it in a woman. I can't help but like her. As for the Cocaine smuggling, by washing the clothes in Cocaine, and then rinsing the cocaine out of them. Do you think the Coke would lose some of its "value" for selling it on the drug market? I would think that there would be some of the fibers from the clothing that would then be mixed in to the coke. when the water finally evaporated. I really wish the writers could write a story about drug smuggling from beginning to end. "Saving Face" another Logan and Barek episode started out with drug smuggling. Remember the girl who was used as a "mule" she swallowed herion in baloons, but the story finished off with a plastic surgeon with issues bilking the system. Great episode too, But I am starting to become more curious on all the different ways drugs are brought into our country. Oh and Alice Kringe, isnt she a beautiful woman. She looks as pretty and young as she did when she was in the movie "Ghost Story", which was made in 1981.

You know, Cassie, I've heard of clothing from South America being soaked, then dried in cocaine as an effective way of smuggling drugs. Because the entiere process is long and hard to go through, only those true smugglers who're willing to wait for it, get their dope.
So, that part of the episode didn't rub me the wrong way at all. I've also read articles in several magazines about clothing being soaked in cocaine then dried for it -- Vanity Fair and Interview.
The fact that this episode reminded me of Unrequited in its plot ant ambience is, I think, a tribute to the writer. She was able, before, to give us humore over the tragic family drama of Harvey and his mother. And, here, she was also able to give us humor over the tragedy of a mother killing her daughter.
In her interview, Ms. Sengupata said that she finds life to be absurdly funny, even when it's not ha-ha funny. I think that's on display here and in Unrequjited.

As to Barek's wardrobe, white shoes in the winter are just tacky! With the exception of sneakers and tennis shoes, it is simply not done between after Labor Day and before Easter. Or maybe we're just sticklers in the south. And was she wearing high-top tennis shoes at one point? The toes peeking below the pants sure looked it. Oh good lord; after all the carping I've done that Eames needs more practical, non-stiletto heels on the job I can appreciate the down-to-earth nature of Barek's footwear, but it's not professional. As to the hats, my first thought was "Huh? Nanook of the North?" But then, maybe that's the written character quirk: if Logan can have his plaid ties and brown leather coat, Barek can probably get away with some funky caps.
I wish they'd done more with Deakins, he mentioned his father had Alzheimers some time back so I wondered if the dementia would strike a chord--bad pun, sorry, nerve. Also wish they'd done more with Carver, but we take what we can get.
Being a naive sheltered little child I can't comment on the cocaine smuggling, except to say that the wardrobe/techie couple were idiots on general principle. I loved Logan and Barek's mutual smirks in interrogation. (Their non-verbal communication in this episode was terrific.)
I really don't mind Goren and Eames not getting this story. Give the newbies some strong stories, not just the leftovers. But also, Logan has some selfish-mother issues of his own; long term fans know of Logan's connection, but he doesn't need to brood over it. Truth be told there were times when it seemed that some combination of the writers/D'Onofrio were determined to beat us over the head with stories-that-hit-close-to-poor-Goren's-messed-up-home. And there was snark a-plenty, much to our delight.
I find it odd, slightly annoying, that they're insisting on Logan as lead detective. Barek is in a supporting role, and while she takes the point lead in outright psychology, they seem to be fleshing out and balancing Logan between street cop and knowing how to manipulate people. I suppose it's only natural, after his time on the force + maturity for the character, but it seems that even the CI team is giving Barek short shrift. Isn't "Criminal Intent" supposed to be about the profiling/psychology of crime and motives?
All that aside, I'm still delighted over this episode. All praise to Ms. SenGupta!!!

Kudos to Stephanie SenGupta!
Great episode
Some comments: Is it just me or does the wardrobe dept. for the Logan/Barek episodes suck? Barek always wears a disgusting hat, Logan always wears his disgusting brown leather jacket with an equally disgusting scarf.
I've waited for Barek to develop a personality but after watching this episode and reviewing Watch which I missed before (I downloaded it on iTunes just now) and catching all the other Logan/Barek episodes, she seems to be the more subtle thinker. Quiet. Logan is always speaking for Barek -- "That makes 2 of us." and "Yea... Me neither." -- Julian Sands played his role perfectly though I do have to laugh at his conducting. As a musician (a violinist) please at least hire some convincing musicians or at least attempt to teach Sands to move the Baton to the beat. I literally laughed out loud while watching those scenes.
Another well written Logan Barek episodes gets an A+ from me. Still, I want the writers to delve further into Barek's past -- not that they have already -- and I also want to know what she did in the FBI and see her put that to use. Right now, I see Logan and Barek as equals to Goren and Eames.
Wunderbacht!

I hope by my mentioning I would have liked to have seen Goren/Eames tackle this case that I didn't give the impression that I didn't like this episode--nothing could be further from the truth. Just thinking on my part.
Ms. Sengtupta is a superb writer, with a bleak sense of humor I like.
I think we're being told that Barek is someone who doesn't care what people think of what she wears--or perhaps she dresses in this way on purpose. Just as Goren is frequently impeccably dressed and this works to send a mixed message to those he interviews and interrogates, perhaps Barek dresses in a somewhat slapdash manner to hide her intelligence?
Or maybe the writers are just playing with our heads because we keep complaining about her hats (g)?

I loved it! the arrogant conductor, the needy mother, the neglected daughter... this ep had it all!!
the only thing that bothered me was when Barek mentioned the girl's hand was sticky 'probably from the resin' but it was her left hand, even if she was using pizzicato (plucking) she'd be doing that with her right hand not her left. LOL... something only an 11yr veteran of the violin would notice.

Haha but me being a violinist aswell (10 yrs) I know that the resin on her left hand could have come from playing up high on the E string. But then again since she was 2nd Violin (as she was going to be promoted to first) she probably wasn't playing up there as not many second violin parts are.

Yep, your exactly right but Barek said it was all over her hand & when she inspected it, she looked at the top of the hand, resin from playing in 4th position or hitting harmonics would be on the bottom & tips of the fingers. Even if she did play high up, unless her bow was in a bad position or she over resined it, the residue from the resin wouldn't be that far up on the strings.

LOL... something only an 11yr veteran of the violin would notice.Didn't the sticky stuff turn out to be cocaine? And I wouldn't expect Barek to know that the resin shouldn't be on the left hand, although I guess we don't know all that much about her I'm just sayin... And I laughed at the conducter not conducting properly too. That was kinda funny. Ever since my Orchestra teacher in 7th grade pointed out that when you don't see the piano player's hands, he's not really playing the piano, I've been on the watch for musical goofs like that. (and I'm not telling you how long ago that was--although I am a good age to be dating Goren, I'll say that much ;D ) But I did enjoy this episode. It was a good watch, and I'm regretting my decision not to tape the L/B episodes for posterity. Ah well, that's what USA is for, right? And presumabaly they'll put out the DVD of Season 5 sometime before DVD's become obsolete...
