I am a huge, long-time opera/classical music fan. I have also been a performer in both situations. I can tell you from personal experience that the caricatures of melodramatic divas and divos is right on, and what a randy bunch! I had one conductor for years that loved nothing better than to launch his baton (he used a hard plastic xylophone mallet for rehearsal sessions) at instrumentalists that offended him. Fortunately, he was usually a lousy shot. And the affairs! In the last production I sang in, the star was dallying quite publicly with her tenor, her agent and her producer. The husband was in there somewhere.

Well now I understand what the phrase "cast of thousands" really means. Of course, there's a lot to be said for the role of supporting players to enhance the star's performance.

I'm sorry I missed this one. I'll look for it in repeats.

The USA network aired Dramma Giocoso during its CI Season 5 marathon on December 3. It's scheduled again for January 3 and 4.
