OK ..... ROM;
here is my Eames for you (I fully expect you to defend me from anyone wanting to convince me my Eames is wrong - do you hear me? That's because I am doing this for you)
Eames grew up with brothers and one sister and a cop as a father, a mom that was a stay-at home mom & did odd jobs throughout her life. Mom has since died of natural causes.
Eames decided to become a cop in her last year of highschool as she was very close to her father, admired him greately and had no other real passion in life, so she followed in his footsteps. She did very well in her police training as she is a very determined woman.
Because of her slightly above average intelligence, she had no problems with the job in that aspect. She had no problems with fellow cops because she was straight forward, not shy with speaking and participating, and quick to turn her back on anyone trying to lay a "female" role on her. She never went over the line and tried to be a guy, because she had a father who adored her & thus had a tremendous amount of self-worth/love and feels no need to change to please anyone else. She fell in love with a fellow cop who trained with her who was a little more ambitious than she, who loved her but put the new job first and in doing so - took one risk too many and was killed in the line of duty. Eames took only a week off and was back on the job, as accomplishing tasks helped her to work out her greif and even anger at her dead husband. She was over it for all practical purposes in a year.
Now Eames dates - usually no longer than staying with one guy for 4 months, she is not statisfied with a "normal" life, as she has become accustom to the fast and dangerous world in which she works. She doesn't really miss it - as her dates bore her after a while and she knows that unless she meets a cop or fireman or someone like that, she will not love him the long run & she is not eager to take that chance again - although she would. (good god NO she is not attracted to Goren, come on, Goren's not fast paced)
Eames is not afraid of people at all, she is not intimidated. She knows she can physically put the smack down on almost anyone if she knows they are about to attack. She is cautious of weapons and ambuse situations as she does not have a death wish. She likes to be recognized by fellow cops for a job well done. She has only a few female friends and only joins them for fun a few times a year. She does hang out with cops more often & then still dates; so she is rarely lonely.
She cares about people and understands people who do not lead a life like hers. This lends her feminine side an outlet, caring so much for her sister, able to care and help victims. Eames also has a very similar attitude to Goren in that she doesn't care about the criminal's damn backstory - that is no excuse for breaking her laws & they need to be stopped.
That enough? That's all I've go for now. Please address any critique of this STRAIGHT TO ROM !!! I don't want to discuss my Eames, although I would be glad to read about other's Eames, I am NOT going to defend my Eames, nor do I want to hear about any inconsistancies. I just don't wanna. So there.

sorry about not replying to this sosoner mettlea but i have been a bit busy latley namely getting braces reomved form my mouth(finally) lol. iam really happy at the moment . i agree with alot of oyur eames though i will say a couple diifrecnes i would point in my version of eames are first. i think that she does not date for long at all( iam not sure she even has a date for as long as for months, i think she either gets bored with them quickly or she doesnt liek them much and seeks out somebody else). second i thin kshe porabbly had some sort of teritry eduction prior to joining the police force and iam not sure that she fell in love straight away with a fellow cop, ithin kshe may have been a function and met someobdy and then the two of them becomae involved, i agree that i think he proabbly he porabbly put his job first and got kilkled in the porcess, i also think that she proabbly has not ocmpletely recovered from the loss and that sometimes bad memories are brought up by cases. i think she is cautiuoius wiht poeple sometimes affraid of what ocudl happend but still preapred to do what ever it takes to portect hereself regardless. as for her childhood i am not sure she has any borthers, i thin khse porabbly is the oldest of either two or three childlren and that her sister might be slightly younger(hence why she is prepared to help her and act as a surrgoate, i thin kshe loves her sister very much). i agree her mother is porabbly dead but i have a feelling that something bad my have happend to ehr hence why alex has never mentioned her. i think she loves her dad but ialso thin khse is angry with him because of what he did and the fact that he left his family in the lurch. i dont think she gets on with a lot of cops beacuse they dont trust her, i think she has reputation for being to honest and not keeping to the old school buddy boy system and i dont think she much cares for hanging out with other cops mostly beacuse i feel that she is more intrested in being with her friends family or just by herself, i dont really see eames as a gossip merchant and i doubt she much cares, i think she also dose not like al ot of other cops beacuse they sort of make fun of her for being gorens shadow and i think this really bothers her even though she owuld not tell anybody about it. i also think that she may have left vice beacuse of testifying in a case agansint corrupt cops. i think she is lonely sometimes but usally happy enoguh to be by herself, i agree that she does like being reconsgised for doing a good job and gets angrry when goren gets all the credit and she is toatly forgeten about. alright i agree metella, if you have any more please post it. you are definatley not worng in your version of eames, after all everybody has diferent version or oppions on a character and each is entietiled to his or her oppinion. and if anyobdy criitizies your eames dont worry i will defened you eames form people that think your eames is wrong. reagrds rom.

Okay, my turn... My Eames is the oldest of 2 girls. She was always very close to her father. Her father was a strong presence in her personality development, and his being a cop (in charge of enforcing morality) caused Alex to have an overdeveloped super ego, and deep respect for the law, and law enforcement. She always knew she wanted to be a cop, just like Dad. Her natural propensity for leadership, confidence, and moral compass made her popular girl in school, as well as a good student. She had a few boyfriends in high school, but only one serious relationship. She met her husband while working vice. He was a detective in another department, and they worked together on a case. His death was very hard on her, but she is not the kind of person to dwell on the sorrows of life. She went back to work after a week, without her wedding ring. She dates from time to time, but she is very selective and this limits the number of dates she goes on (she gets asked out often, and says "no thanks" 9x out of 10). When her sister and brother-in-law found out that the only way they could have children was through a surrogate, Alex stepped up without being asked. It was the right thing to do, to her mind, and she figured she is a strong enough person to be able to handle a pregnancy, child birth, and the hardest part, letting go of the baby. She did handle the pregnancy, childbirth, and letting go well, according to her standards, but she has a deep attachment to the baby, and now spends more time than she would like thinking about her own window for having children growing smaller. Mom and Dad are both alive and kicking, couldn't be more proud of their daughters, and are living in Florida- their life long dream. Like you, I'm not defending my Eames

The only real difference I have in my mind is Eames' family. I was thinking she came from a large family, and until her surrogate pregnancy I thought she was the only girl. Now I think she's the older of two girls, with several brothers. (Mainly big brothers who picked at her in a family way, but were also protective should the need arise. "Hey, don't bother my sister, that's my job!") But either way she's used to being around guys, and with her Dad a cop that really added to her aspect of family. SHe may not like the abuses of the buddy-boy system, but she understands the tight bonds.
I also don't think she's mad at her father about the pension thing--she probably thinks it's a silly rule if the pension alone isn't adequate to meet someone's needs, but she understands. Just one of those things that you have to deal with and move on. She mentioned her father quite often in the first two seasons, and I have mentioned elsewhere that she is definitely a Daddy's girl (I am too, so I can pick it out). She was spoiled in a good way: loved and supported but at the same time taught to take responsibility for herself so she didn't turn out a brat. I don't recall word one about Mom, I'm guessing she died some years back and Eames has gone safely through the grieving process. (SOmeone pointed out the especially sympathetic response in the episode dealing with cancer patients who got bad medicine--perhaps her mother was ill?) Dad is not in FL but still in New York, too many ties to the community and family.
Sing along now, you all know I'm eager to see a baby and or a performance review with Skoda focusing on her pregnancy. Like Trisha said, she's content with her life but the little one now has her thinking off and on about the might-have beens with her own deceased husband. SHe loved him, she wouldn't have married him if she didn't, but along with that came a practical, daily-life approach that kept her from getting too sentimental even during courtship. After his death, thanks in part not just to her own strength but also the loving connection to her family, she was able to keep on. To her mind if she met someone else who she loved she would be willing to go for marriage, but she's not caught up in "Someday my prince will come" and she is content to live life on her own if that's how it works out.
As to her and Goren: I think GOren turns off his insight out of respect. THey know just enough about each other's lives to know where the other is coming from, but neither is going to pry if they wish to stay private. They have figured each other out as working partners, and are perfectly comfortable and confident together. (Eames being so mellow is probably what made her a good partner for Goren, not everyone could work with a guy like that.)
There doesn't seem to be that big an age difference between her and Deakins, maybe ten or twelve years, but the rank thing probably accounts for his paternalism. (Similar to the mothership, where Van Buren is definitely a Mama-you-don't-mess-with, even with much older detectives like Lenny.) To her, thsi is one of those slight annoyances with it's amusing side: she's used t cops, she's used to Daddy, and since Deakins still respects her as a cop she can live with it. Hey, think how much worse it could be.
And fo course Carver, friendly professionals, polite and respectful to each other. She's the one in the pair that's easier for Carver to approach, although now that he and Goren are used to each other she doesn't have to play Buffer quite as often. He seems to think she's, as my family would put it, "just a neat lady". Remember how he seemed so happy at the birth announcement: "Excellent" with a happy little nod? The joke in my family was that if Carver wasn't married they needed to get together. Not that we were serious about it, we just wanted two cool characters to actually do something during the early years.

janetcatbird intresting take on eames. slightly off topic but speaking of goren and carver getting used to each other did you notice in the second epsidoe of the third sesaon when goren tells carver that he thought schizoperincs make good eyewitness the major eye role that craver reacted with(it was to funny, he sort of looked like how did i know oyu were going to say something like that). that sort of proves that carver has not only gotten used to goren, but he has also taken on some of eames classic looks and adopted them fir his own use. reagrds rom.

In OZ we're only up to the 4th ep in the 3rd series.............so haven't seen the new gal Bishop. But, gotta say, Eames is wonderful. Goren and her make the perfect combo. I always liked Kathryn Erbe as an actor. She was cool in the Mighty ducks and great in that Movie she starred in with Kevin Bacon (in which the name totally escapes my mind right now).... I think Eames (& Erbe) are tops! boo cunningnick

I'll try to be more succinct in this post. I think Eames is a little down after the baby due to hormones. I may be projecting here, but I agree with Rose's first reason. I really like Janetcatbird's analysis. As a widow, having the baby may have reminded her of all the things she didn't get to experience with her husband. Sometimes, big events in life make us reflect and evaluate our priorities.
My best friend died young of cancer. She and her husband desperately wanted to have children. After her death, he ended up marrying a wonderful woman with an adopted daughter. I liked her because she was secure enough to let him love his first wife. They even had a few pictures of her around. Nothing too much. Just on the piano mixed in with all the family pictures.
Anyway, they had a baby years later. It was a miracle baby since the second wife wasn't supposed to be able to have children. I was visiting and was so excited for them. While we alone for a few minutes, he said it sometimes made him wonder what he missed out on in his first marriage. He said it was his only regret about the marriage. They found out one month before they got married that she had a terminal illness, and it took six years for her to die. I think a sudden death would be harder to deal with. Less closure.

I'm at work cleaning up some things, so pardon my multiple posts between projects.
I had a long (surprise, surprise) post regarding why I believe Eames has had a number of male mentors helping her along. I'd be interested to hear what others say, since this may be projecting.
In a close knit community, with someone who was raised in it, it may be possible for a man to feel comfortable with a woman a generation or so younger. In my mind, the fact that her father was a cop and her husband was a cop is the first step. The second part of this theory is based on the fact that most men are protective of a certain type of woman. If some of the men worked with her dad, or knew her dad or husband, there would be this natural inclinition to "help" her. There wouldn't be as much of the sexual issue since they might have known her as a child. She knows the "ropes" of being a cop and so they can say things they can't say to a woman they don't know well (like how to "play dumb"). Third, I believe it was compounded by the normal sympathy people would feel about her husband's death. I think men a generation or so older would encourage her to focus on her career as a way to deal with her husband's death. She's probably encouraged to be "meet so and so" or do blind dates by the mentor's wifes, etc.
I hope this isn't straying into fanfic or anything. I really liked Janetcatbird (did I get that right) analysis.

Deakins' relationship with Eames certainly shows signs of that of a mentor. So, come to think of it, did his interactions with Bishop. Deakins strikes me as being of the old school, and sometimes his reactions are a bit patronizing, but he's not hostile to women and I can't imagine him harassing anyone. He likes being a mentor.
Perhaps one of the reasons for his edgy relationship with Goren is that Deakins would like to be a mentor to Goren as well. But Goren's difficulties with authority figures prevents that. (They're probably too close in age as well).

I think Kathryn Erbe has been playing Eames a little differently since returning from pregnancy leave and I wanted to know what you guys think. I think that the leave did her good, everyone needs some time off from their job sometime or you risk burnout. As a member of the blue collar lower middle working class society that does hard labor for a living i can tell you that a break is a nice thing to have, even if its only one day or something in addition to your regular days off. But i do not deal with grusome crome scenes & dangerous situations on a daily basis & detectives dont really get 2 days off a week like us blue collar workers do they? i dont know.

Just guessing there As for Eames is the bomb! when CI primered & i watched one episode with her in it it made me deside to presue a career as a detective where before i didnt think that a woman would make it in a profession like that even in this day & age. I agree about what someone said about Goren not being exactly easy to work with, geniuses are different people all together. i took a professional state I.Q. test my senior yr in high school & it came back as 192. now i'm not sure if that's a genius number but all i do know is that i'm different than most everybody i meet & i have also been told that i'm hard to work with because my thought process is so different lol whatever that means . Somone like Goren would be the perfect partner for me, i can understand the way he thinks because i had a best friend in high school whose mother & brother were both schizophrenics. i got educated on the desease as well as other mental illnesses so i could better understand her situation & have the ability to be a proper leaning shoulder whenever she would need to confide in me.

Yep, detectives (at least in NY) get 2 consecutive days off per week. They're just not always Saturday and Sunday.

Not to go back too far in history but I was reading some comments from March and something struck a note. One of the reasons I prefer the L&O series over NYPDBlue is that there is not too much content about the detective's personal lives. Other than Eliot's occasional forays with his daughter and Lenny Briscoe's tragedy with his daughter they keep it pretty much to the investigations. I am somewhat tired of seeing the tragedy in Sipowicz's (asnd Russel's) life being played out again and again. I am not unsympathetic, but I am glad this is the last season. chief
