Trisha or anyone who can tell me--what show gave the details of Eames husband? I have seen several comments regarding the shooting, but no one says when that was revealed. I learned everything I know from my brothers about cars, so it makes sense that Eames learned about cars from her male siblings. Also, I always thought her mom was alive, and now we know she had a stroke and there wasn't a mention of her actually dying from it. One other thing that bugs me. Does anyone care that they have her wearing non-sensible shoes? She always looks so professional and real female detectives don't wear high heels! I hope she doesn't start wearing trashy tops like some of those "other" female cops on other shows.

Interesting you should mention sensible shoes for women police officers. I have worked with women who wore sensible/practical shoes when assigned to patrol duties, and later switched to more fashionable/ladylike shoes when assigned in plainclothes. I think that a female MCS detective would likely wear the latter as the assignment would generally bring them into more businesslike areas than alleys. As for the "trashy tops" worn by females in other shows I have often wondered why the director/producer called for that wardrobe choice. I do remember one time when Russell was working undercover and Simeone cast a questioning eye at her outfit. She explained it by saying the subject she was working liked her "tarted up". It was interesting to note that her partner Jill pretty much stuck to less revealing attire. That said, being a self-confessed male chauvinist I would not have objected to outfits like that in my day in law enforcement, but sadly seldom, if ever, saw anyone like Olivia Benson.

Come on, now Chief. There’s a difference between being a cheerfully appreciative, hetero male and being a chauvinist. I know how chauvinists talk to women, and you ain’t it. Besides, liking Criminal Intent would be a bit out of character for a male chauvinist. Goren and Eames both show a fine disregard for the limitations of their culturally assigned stereotypes.

Eames' husband was never mentioned in any episode. Kathryn Erbe said in an interview that it is part of Eames' back story. Alex was married, and her husband, a cop, was killed in the line of duty. That's pretty much all she said about it, and I have been unable to locate the article that she said it in. I have also noticed that Eames hasn't been sporting those sensible shoes. Her wardrobe as a whole has become much more flattering, but she's definitely not "tarted up." Chief, I agree with Observer, you don't "sound" like a chauvinist at all. Besides, even as a hetero woman, I would rather see a woman dressed the way Benson dresses than the way Eames dressed the first season any day Fortunately, Eames is in a nice middle ground now: professional and flattering.

i agree with trisha on this eames is definately not tarted up beacuse if she was you think that she would porabbly be wearring a lot of over the top make up but i have yet to see her wear much at all in fact i think sometimes she doesn't wear any, but her clothing has gotten a lot more flattering as the series progressed. but on the clothes benson wears i think that eames is a lot more practical even with her more flattering look in her choice of clothingthan benson is. yes granted she is not wearing her snesible shoes as much as she used to but she is generally more inclined to wear clothing to suit her needs rather just for looks. reagrds rom.

Darn! I spent all those years cultivating my male chauvinist persona and you guys see right through it. I must have mellowed somewhat having been retired for ten years. About twenty years ago in a college English course (with a female professor) my term paper was titled "The Female Officer in the Patrol Function". My prior experience as of twenty years ago pretty much led me to believe that a road patrol assignment was not ideally suited for the average female, and I posited that in my paper. The professor took issue with my premise but eventually ended up giving me an A- on the paper. (This only after a long discussion on the amount of pain sustained by a woman during childbirth in a hospital situation versus that experienced after being kicked in the groin in a dark alley and its effect on the ability of the officer to continue fighting his/her opponent. )

I like this show because the partnership between Goren and Eames is ideal to my mind. Eames is not a man. To be good at her job and to be respected for being good at her job she shouldn't have to work like a guy would, although I bet she could kick a groin AND give birth with equal panache, perhaps even simultaneously Goren said they have complementary skills and this is key to why they work so well together. Incidentally I like that he opens doors for her, etc. Good manners never hurt anyone's ability to do good work. As for her clothes, look, don't kill me for being superficial, but I notice a woman's clothes, especially stylish work clothes. I am a woman. I loved Eames' short, belted black leather jacket in Magnificat.
