odd, I thought that too, but didn't want to sound too picky..... the main picture, I guess, is appropriate as it was NBC's "season 3" picture for their website. But the smaller scene pictures are all old universal hat. More more more .... is always better.

I don't know about newer pictures. One looks like it's from FPS, and another is from Pas de Deux. Can't tell about the ones of Deakins and Carver.

I guess this thread should really be Third season DVDs now. But FYI to everyone, Amazon has a pre-order link up and running.

Thanks for the heads-up on the Amazon Third season DVDs pre-order, rune! I really wanted the second season, but I would have hated to miss out on the third! Jill

Newer? They look okay to me. At least it's the current hairstyles.
I don't understand the reasoning behind releasing the 3rd season before the 2nd. I've just watched the 3rd season for what? The third time so far this season? (and that's not counting how often I watch my tapes, which we won't get into). It would have been nice to see some of Season 2, since the VCR died that I taped it on (it basically wrecked all the tapes it made. Lovely. Worked fine on that one, but not on any others.)

The large picture of D'Onofrio and Erbe, and the small one of Vance are first season promo pictures. The picture of Sheridan is from a first season episode. So, besides the photos from Pas De Deux and D.A.W. (neither of which are all that great) the photos are pretty old.
I really don't get releasing the 3rd season right away, either. If you have been watching the show on NBC, and then catching the reruns on USA, when the set is available in September, you will have already seen every episode on it 4 times. Who besides die hard fans will buy it after that?

I can't say too much about the photos on the cover of the Season 3 DVD set. I can't make them out too well, and besides, it's not the main reason I would buy the DVDs anyway.
However, about the "reasoning" (or lack thereof) behind releasing Season 3 before Season 2. This just makes no sense to me. I would think fans like myself would be more inclined to want to buy DVDs of episodes they haven't seen in a while, not the most recent ones. After the initial broadcast on NBC, the network is now doing reruns of the latest season, plus we can see them again on USA.
Talk about overkill. I don't know if Universal considered this before making their decision, but they could actually have hurt potential sales of the Season 3 DVD set on the heels of so many multiple airings of the most recent episodes.
In my perfect world, Universal would release the Season 2 set in September, then give all us fans an early Christmas gift by releasing Season 3 in time for holiday gift giving. Oh, and the DVD sets would contain lots and lots of bonus features and extras.
But of course, we do not live in this perfect world. We are, as always, at the mercy of the power brokers who dangle the carrot in front of us time and time again.
Then again, I never pretend to understand what the suits or marketing geeks are thinking. But perhaps that's giving them too much credit in this case.

Amen, Techguy!!! Wouldn't it be perfect if those suits and marketing geeks thought like you and all the rest of us LOCI fans about this. We'd be happy and they'd undoubtedly make a whole lot more money ;D

Hey, almost offended marketing geek (20 years in the biz) over here! ;D <disclaimer> I have absolutely no behind-the-scenes knowledge of what prompted Universal's decision </disclaimer>, but from a marketing standpoint the "published" info (that they would capitalize on the recentness of the episodes) makes very little sense -- for the reasons ya'll have mentioned, especially episode/rerun overkill. It might work for the Mothership, because of Jerry Orbach sentiment, but not for the other two series. So I'm voting for the idea that a "suit high up the ladder" had what he/she thought was a brilliant idea and overruled the normal marketing strategy. Happens all the time -- occasionally they're even right. Hate it when that happens. I'm actually wondering if we might get an "early release" of season 2 in the spring -- possibly before sweeps. And then see 4 next fall and so on. What ever the reason, I'm firmly in the annoyed camp. My tapes of season 2 are starting to show wear and tear, while I've barely played season 3 because of the rerun schedule. So any offended "suits" out there I'll need to apologize to?

Oh no, rune! 20 years in the biz doesn't make you a marketing geek, any more than 30 years in the teaching profession makes me a literacy geek. I'm sorry you're "almost offended" as I had no intention of hurting anyone's feelings. I'm really glad it's "almost" instead of totally. From your posts I can tell that you are anything but a geek. As for your marketing skills, your assessment of the marketing strategies and having prospered for 20 years in the biz show that you are way above most of us (me especially) in that area. Your self-description as being in the "annoyed camp" reinforces the idea that the majority of us are like-thinkers on this weird DVD sales plan. I know your opening line was tongue-in-cheek, but I wanted to apologize in case there was a little bit of internal injury. I'll be more careful of my labeling in the future. Jill

While Rune is most interesting and not in the category; there are a lot of stuffed shirts out there that do not take the time to realize that some audience sets are not run-of-the-mill & I think they missed the better mark this time.
Work to TechGuy. I would like some behind the scenes, even if there is no specific dialog; but just watching one scene being shot - how they set up, film, break & do retakes would be very interesting.
Bloopers - now that could be funny.

...but I wanted to apologize in case there was a little bit of internal injury. Don't worry dreamcatcher , I'm really not hurt internally or otherwise. Part of the problem in marketing and advertising is that there are rarely any decisions made without too many "cooks in the kitchen" or not enough (not enough with common sense and the power to use it) — paradoxical, but true. It's bad enough in a small environment, like my current job, and part of the reason that I don't move to a larger agency. Even around here there's one ad campaign that we don't talk about because it was so awful. Thanks, Metella. I'm with you and Techguy with the wish for extras. My favorite would be episode commentaries with VDO and René or Katherine -- VDO's are usually really interesting and/or funny. If you haven't heard/seen it, the commentary he and Janeane Garofalo did for Steal This Movie was hilarious and worth the price of the disc. And the ones he did for Happpy Accidents and The Whole Wide World were very insightful if you like hearing about how he and the "movie-making process" work.

Being the Techguy that I am, I am all in favor of DVD extras that would include commentary about the process of how an episode goes from idea to finished product, including Metella's suggestion of setting up a scene, particularly a crime scene.
And for some comic relief, a bloopers section would be very enlightening and enjoyable--and very well received by most viewers.

I would love to see on Season 2 or Season 3: Interviews with the major writers: (Balcer, Son, Sengupta, Leight, Gomard-Meyer and others if possible) in other words, "Behind the Writing Process". Commentary by the 4 cast members (or at least D'Onofrio and Erbe) on at least a few episodes. Behind the scenes of a shot - both in the studio and on location. Deleted scenes really don't make a diff to me, unless an episode has been so cut down or an ending really changed to make a critical difference in viewing. For season 3, I would love for them to do "Making of "A Murderer Among Us" just like the documentary for "Making of Homicide:The Subway", taking it from the draft all the way through the shooting and post-production. Bloopers would be fun but I don't think TPTB would release them. D.

I've got a question on season one DVD . Weren't there any extras on it? I have only the premiere episode on DVD and apparently didn't realize that the whole season came out later. Okay, I can find out myself when Amazon ships it to me by the end of this week, but that would involve waiting and I'm not very good at it. (When I realize it that I have been! Geez Louise. Tried to fix the bolding on this and I think I've modified it eighty million times. I think I've got it now though.........maybe.
