Sorry All, forgive the rookie. Why does Goren occasionally appear with a considerable stubble on his face? I can't imagine an elite unit such as the Major Case Squad allowing a detective to go without shaving.

in interviews in the very first season, Mr. D'Onofrio said that he appeard with stubble to give the impression that Goren had been working all night on a case .... no more that I know of has been said directly to that point by the people involved. Your point of police policy has been brought up by people here on the board - I kinda like the stubble, but the long hair gets to me

Interesting, guess I wasn't paying that much attention to the hour of the day...In a another program I took exception to the length of the hair of the supervisory FBI agent played by Anthony Lapaglia in the series Without a Trace. I notice in recent episodes his hair is much more in line with what I believe still to be Bureau standards, at least for supervisors. Of course, I date back to the days of J. Edgar Hoover when everyone was closely trimmed, wore white shirts and dark suits.

It actually doesn't help to pay attention to the hour. The scenes are shot out of order which makes the facial hair even more annoying and unreal.
I get why D'Onofrio chose to do it, and in some cases, the stubble works, but he's pushed it too far in several instances, and uses it too often for it to be realistic. The length of the hair on his head is another story. As long as it is neat and in a uniform pattern, he can get away with it being a bit longer than we have been used to. You can chalk it up to Goren trying a new style, like Ed Green on the mothership (which I'm not crazy about, either).
I don't like longer hair on D'Onofrio because 1) it shows more of his gray and makes him look old, and 2) It doesn't look the same from scene to scene, and I can't help noticing it.

Thanks for the more detailed inside scoop Trisha. I agree, it may seem authentic to Goren, but it is annoying to me. The hair, not so much. I started in law enforcement in the early 60's so I have seen styles going from neatly trimmed hair and no beard or moustache, through too long (in my opinion) hair and beards then to the nearly skinned look of a lot of officers today. chief (someone who looks old no matter what the length of the hair)

I never thought much about the stubble before, but it seems to be getting old. And the new hair didn't bother me until last week, when it changed from short, then to long, then back to short all in the same show. That was so distracting, I couldn't focus on the show. I just want them to pick a look and stay with it, so I can focus on the important things, like the story line.

I saw a story where Vincent said he wants Goren to look like he works all the time with no regards to himself, so that's why he does the stubble. I'll post the story, if no one has before. i'm a sucker for a guy with stubble anyway! The changes of stubble and hair lengths and hair colors is annoying and distracting. As the show changes scenes I find myself saying "What the hell?" It's ok though, I've gotten used to it. Goren is an odddball anyway, so it kinda fits him.

Oh I think Goren (and Vincent) has a lot of regard for himself. His clothing is impecable, never a casual outfit like other detectives. Of course, this does fit in with assignment to the MCS. I believe that Vincent just didn't consider the fact that the scenes were shot at different times and then put together, making his stubble inappropriate.

I have no "inside" knowledge at all, but from watching the anatomy of a homicide (on how they made an episode of Homicide for TV) it seems to me that while the actor can get a good idea of the flow of scenes .... reshoots and totally afterward the editing can mix things up a bit ..... so some of that has to go to the editors for the blame, while a little may still reside with the actors.

In Badge a murdering cop, who wanted money to put her kids through private school really put Goren on the spot when she said he frittered away his money on chicks and good clothes "because in his size nothing was ever on sale." Maybe so but I also think Goren spends more than his fair share of time in front of his bathroom mirror. How the world sees him matters. He doesn't want to be seen a unaffluent (sic?) or ill-kempt. So then why the scruffy stubble? As a woman I like the stubble - sexy ;D but it needs to be more consistently done. Say for example when the scene shows them working late, called out suddenly in the middle of the night, overnight stakeouts, etc. Same consistency is needed with his binder, overcoat, hair length and colour. Some times it's needed but sometimes it's confusing and distracting.

Speaking of overdone, IMHO, Goren as a "genius" is used a bit too much. To me it is campy, he is always ready with the condescending answer to everything that arises. I'll bet he doesn't have a friend in the unit nor does he ever go to a "cop bar" with the guys/gals.

There was a mention of the Friday night poker games, so he must have a few buddies. We know he dates now and then, but the guy loves his work. Then there's always the library. Maybe he needs a book club.

You’re right, he clearly has buddies – one of them is very taken with Eames But that doesn’t answer the Chief’s point – the poker games don’t necessarily include any cops. Chief, I find it interesting that you perceive Goren as condescending, because to me he very rarely seems that way. Sometimes he takes on a bit of the sound of a college professor, when he’s conveying a lot of information at once. But that doesn’t strike me as condescending. There have been a few times when I thought he seemed condescending, but it’s always been in reaction to something about the person that set him off. For instance, in Suite Sorrow, the fiance takes a superior attitude over Goren’s estimate of the value of one of the hotels, and shortly thereafter Goren corrects his grammar in a condescending manner. I’m interested, though, in when he strikes you as being condescending. Are there specific instances, or is it just the sense that him knowing so much makes him seem condescending?
