Thanks for reviving this thread, guys!
Welcome to the board KMC. You've written some interesting posts. I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts.
Goren, the character, declared "his most usefull investigative tool" to be his library card in one episode. Goren is revealing himself to be more sociable than anti-social in his youth even though he had a difficult childhood. We don't know that he hasn't had any long term relationships. He easily could have. It just hasn't come up as part of any of the plots so far. We do know he played JV basketball, at least for a while and seems to have expert-buddies he can call on at a moments notice when he needs assistance with a case like his rabbi - translating friend.

I have long speculated that Goren collects "friends" in sort of the same way he collects other research material. I don't doubt that he has friendly feelings for any of the people he taps for information, but I do doubt that he spends much time with any of them.

The fact that he's able to maintain friendly relations with ex-girlfriends..or at least one that we know of...speaks well for him...and you're probably right...while he would be an interesting person to go out with...hang out with...he could very will have problems with maintaining a relationship. I suspect, given what we know of his background, that he might have issues with trust and intimacy. The fact that his job seems to call him out at all hours wouldn't help either. He'd need someone with a great deal of sympathy and understanding...and strength...not to mention a life of their own...someone who could cope with the fact that he might not always be there when he's needed...which is not easy. We've seen Stabler's marriage fall apart on SVU.

Thank you Chief and Sirenna.
Friendships are variable things...them come in all different degrees. I suspect Bobby does have a wide variety of "friends" who are useful to him in his work in various way..and on various levels. There's nothing intrinsically wrong with that...since I personally don't see him as the type of person who "uses" his friends...or makes them for the purpose of using them.
I'm getting tired and dyslexic...time to go now.

Trisha, I think you hit it on the head. Goren probably doesn't spend much time with his "friends". Personally, I would classify them as acquaintances or and/or sources. I don't think I would care for Bobby as a friend, but that's just me. chief

Wow, I find Bobby to be honest, hard working, intelligent, respectful and good with kids and dogs. I'd take him as a friend any day.

Hello Beg to Differ, Well, as I said, that's just me. In my career I met a few people like Goren, I found them to be a real pita to work with. Speaking of the beard however, it was back on Saturday night. I thought somewhere in the back of my mind that I had seen the epi previously so perhaps it was a rerun. In any case, I did not get the impression that he had been up all night working when the beard showed up. I admit that I do not pay a lot of attention to his suit, shirt or tie to other than to note that he always looks well groomed and fresh...aside from the beard. I still think it is an affectation of D'O's that the producers allow him to get by with. To me, a very conservative old line person, it shows disrespect and I can't see why Deakins, or the producers, would allow him to get away with it. I had supervisors that would hide a subordinate if he showed even a five o'clock shadow rather than have me spot it. chief

RE: The beard....as I said before, I think it's an affectation...or personal preference that he's been allowed to get away with...Deakins does seem to give him a lot of latitude.
As for Bobby as a friend...I think he'd be a very interesting friend to have...and if once you've made it past his twitchy barriers...he would probably prove to be a loyal friend...but he might not be the first one you'd call with a problem...since he may not be around a lot. But then again...who knows...we just don't see their down time.
