NicoleMarie, please be nice. Shooting the messenger will not change the message. It is more likely true that D'Onofrio has become difficult to work with than not, or I seriously doubt that Mr. Wolf would be so completely rearranging this show. As Patcat noted, you don't mess with a good thing unless you have to.
I didn't feel the addition of Noth/Logan would be that disruptive to the show or it's core audience, but following Logan and a new partner half of the time, and Eames and Goren the other half will be very disruptive. It won't even feel like the same show.
Not to discredit Sheridan and Vance, but who gives a crap if they stay? WE HARDLY SEE THEM!!!
I want Eames! I want her in every episode, even if we only see her for a few minutes. Otherwise, this show will certainly feel like Law & Order: The Replacements.
That said, I think most of you know that I'm a sucker for a strong female character, so I think it's interesting that the new "Holmes" may be a woman. While that will serve to grab my attention, I think it should be noted that a great number of the fans of this show tune in because they have little crushes on D'Onofrio. If that is why Noth is being added -- to counter, while it's a good idea to introduce him to the show first, I doubt his addition will keep those people around. I mean, look at how contentious things are already.

Here's a report from E Online.
"Noth Lands New "L&O" Slot
1 hour, 8 minutes ago Television - E! Online
By Bridget Byrne
Chris Noth is back on the Law & Order beat.
• News: D'Onofrio diagnoses with exhaustion • News: Law star's mystery malady • News: Celebs gather for Orbach funeral

Noth, who left the flagship series in NBC's long-running crime series 10 years ago, is reprising his role as Detective Mike Logan. But this time, he will share case-solving duties with Vincent D'Onofrio's Detective Robert Goren on the spinoff Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
NBC and Dick Wolf, producer of all four L&O series, announced late Tuesday that the two men would get equal billing during their split-shift assignments--11 episodes each next season--and ends the rumor that Noth would be taking over entirely from D'Onofrio, who collapsed in November under the strain of headlining the hour drama as the ultra quirky, intense mastermind Goren and was briefly hospitalized for exhaustion.
"The hardest job in show business is being a single lead on an hour drama series," creator and executive producer Dick Wolf said in a statement. "Vincent has done an unbelievable job for the last four seasons, but after three and half years, the grueling pace finally took its toll. This is an ideal solution so that Vincent can continue to do the incredible work that has become the hallmark of the role. I've worked with Chris over the past 17 years, and bringing him on to reprise one of the most popular characters in the history of the brand, is a win-win situation."
Noth played the maverick Logan on Law & Order from the ripped-from-the-headlines crime show's inception in 1990 until 1995 alongside a changing cast of partners--Max Greevey (George Dzundza), Phil Cerreta (Paul Sorvino) and Lennie Briscoe (Jerry Orbach). After season five Noth left the show, seemingly just another victim of its revolving-door casting policy.
But in 1998, he reprised the Logan character in an NBC movie, executive produced by Wolf, Exiled: A Law and Order Movie, which caught up with the sometimes testy cop on Long Island, where he'd been shunted after punching a NYC councilman. Wolf and NUTS (the acronym for NBC Universal Television Studios) also have other Logan properties in development.
Most recently Noth has, of course, been best know as Carrie's seductive Mr. Big in HBO's hit series Sex and the City.
Next season, Law & Order: CI's fifth, he will be paired with an as yet unnamed partner on the Major Case Squad in pursuit of "the worst criminal offenders." But first, he will turn up in this Sunday's episode, "Stress Position," dropping by to "warily" aid Goren and Detective Alexandra Eames (Kathryn Erbe (news)) because he's dating a prison nurse who has information that may help them crack a case involving prisoner abuse and political corruption.
Noth gushed about how "great" it was to back working with the producers and the Law & Order family. "I felt very much at home when I did the guest shot and realized how terrific the cast and crew are, it was an offer that I couldn't refuse," he said in an NBC press release.
Meantime, in the same statement, D'Onofrio affirmed his intention to stay put: "I love this show, and I hope to stay with it as long as it is on the air. After recently working with Chris on an episode, I am excited about what he will bring to the show creatively, and my reduced workload will be very welcome. "

As Patcat noted, you don't mess with a good thing unless you have to. I thought the messengers tone was really mean, so I said something. hehehehe I'm sure D"Onofrio can be difficult but, it seemed the messenger was posting just to be mean. That's what bugged me. I can't stand Logan but, geez, I won't be mean about it! I've done my initial freakout/ fit. Now I will just wait and see like everyone else. Come on Sunday! I do agree the changes will be disruptive. I'm trying to imagine how CI would be with the changes...I'm picturing another SVU. I don't think an SVU format would work because SVU is so strong on its own. I agree the core of CI will be different. No more Sherlock like profiler with Goren's quirks. As long as Eames stays, I will watch. And skip the ones with Logan in them!

So....
50% Goren & Eames 50% Logan & "whomever"
I guess I'm going to need half as many tapes, now. Smile. BUT... they've tossed me a bone - assuming it's true that D'Onofrio intends to stay onboard now; thanks to a lighter workload.
I guess that actually isn't so bad? I thought I was getting 23 more Goren episodes and then - "POOF!"
Now, I might get another 40 or some such, when all the math is done; for assuming the ratings don't tank, the series could actually go on for years to come! Of course, it does mean only 2 ep's worth watching per month. Ahem. We'll see.

How about Bishop as a partner for Logan? All those repeats might be leading up to something! One thing's for sure...it sure is a lot of publicity for the upcoming episode. tv.zap2it.com/tveditorial/tve_main/1,1002,271|93478|1|,00.html "I love this show, and I hope to stay with it as long as it is on the air," D'Onofrio says. Oh good grief, I've mentioned before I'm not an especial fan of Logan. Good Lord, how could he do the psych value of the case--or would that be when we get to see Skoda actually put to use?
OintmentFly, may I ask where you got your information?
Personally I do not think this bodes well. I'll try to be nice and objective and watch the Logan episodes, but I don't anticipate being drawn in.
Something I just thought of--we've heard Dick Wolf's, D'Onofrio's, and Noth's views. But Rene Balcer's opinion is conspicuously absent. Hmmm...

Maybe a Logan episode won't be completely Gorenless. He could appear in a few scenes (think VanBuren). I can see all the detectives interacting in an episode, but the focus would be on Goren/Eames one week and Logan/? the next. The writers wouldn't have to explain Goren's absence, he's still working, only he's working on a different case.

Here's the "official release" from nbcumv: nbcumv.com/entertainment/release_detail.nbc/entertainment-20050209000000-chrisnothjoinsnbc.html"The hardest job in show business is being a single lead on an hour drama series," creator and executive producer Dick Wolf explained. "Vincent has done an unbelievable job for the last four seasons, but after 3 ? years, the grueling pace finally took its toll. This is an ideal solution so that Vincent can continue to do the incredible work that has become the hallmark of the role. I've worked with Chris over the past 17 years, and bringing him on to reprise one of the most popular characters in the history of the brand, is a win-win situation."
Executive producer and showrunner Rene Balcer added, "Having written for Chris during the five years he was on 'Law & Order,' this is a unique opportunity for me to revisit an old friend and take Detective Mike Logan into unchartered territory. We like trying new things at 'Criminal Intent,' whether it's asking our fans to decide a character's fate or using rotating leads. As Vincent said, cool counts, and we think this idea's pretty cool. Adding Chris and a new partner to the mix allows us to create a fresh dynamic while remaining true to what's made 'Criminal Intent' a success."

I speculated about a possible Logan/Bishop partnership on another thread so I won't repeat myself.
This development about adding Chris Noth to the cast is beginning to sound more and more like either: a) the NUTS are preparing for Vincent D'Onofrio's departure by getting viewers accustomed to seeing him less in Season 5 OR b) the NUTS were forced into damage control by D'Onofrio's health problems and/or erratic behavior OR c) all of the above
It's also beginning to look and sound like the new look CI is going to be a vastly different CI than we've become accustomed to. Maybe not even CI at all. *Groan*

There's an interesting report on www.gothamist.com about Noth's return as well as some very interesting graffiti art of Goren and Eames. It's a great site by the way, with lots of info on New York City, and the bloggers there love all of the L&O shows. Patcat

I'm waiting to see how Noth/Logan gets brought back to the "Mainland" from his punishment duty on Staten Island. Maybe he will do an outstanding job this Sunday (Stress ...) and earn his way back. Seems that the writers will have to address this issue.

Right you are, velocity. The only "nonsense" was Vincent's behavior. Wolf's had enough, so is phasing him out. Ointmentfly - TEXT Vincent's behavior as you call it, NONSENSE! is not where I am from. I totally believe Vincent went down from exhaustion, and nothing about this actor is nonsense to me! My anger was this was carefully planned out and sprung on us on the eve of Logan's intro. We are being worked up for a reason - viewers and ratings is what Wolf is interested in. Feb sweeps, so let's stir the pot with some big news they already had worked out. I believe Wolf has a decent and honest working relationship with Vincent and Rene. Wolf is not phasing Vincent out, this is an effort to keep him hanging in longer by reducing his work load. Don't misconstrue my dismay of being LEAD! as a dislike for Vincent. Let me clear this up now. To me, Vincent IS CI. Goren magic makes this the different L&O. Vincent created this fascinating character out of Rene's words. It was the character that held me faithfully. That translates into Vincent held me to the show, not Rene's stories. I do not wish to disrespect the writer, but frankly, CI without Vincent, is just another L&O. It will be good story no doubt, but lack strong character like ensamble show tend to do. No personality to the actors cause the show is story driven. We already have that in L&O and SVU. CI was my baby with it's refreshing twist. This, unfortunately will no longer be so with Noth. Noth is not the caliber actor Vincent is, nor able to pull off the interesting character study - sorry, that is how I feel. I did not care for Noth in L&O, and I fear the same will happen here. I am a follower of good acting, and good character work, which lead me to the best character actor of this time - Vincent. I followed Vincent to the show, the show did not lead me to the actor. I hope this clears up any confusion who may have assumed from my message.
