The sheer fact that LOCI has had two alternating teams of Detectives since Season 5 (4 years now) makes the point that it is no "House." I'm with Techguy. I hate what's happened and how its happened. But I will give Team Jeff, Saffron and MEM a chance. I'm sure I'll spend a few weeks lamenting and wondering how Goren would have handled the case, but that's to be expected from a G/E fan. I used to do that with some of the Chris Noth episodes, so its no refection on JG, for sure.

Pointing out the obvious difference, L&O: CI isn't titled 'Goren & Eames' or even 'Goren'
From all interviews i have, it was intended to be written around the character "Goren", and DW chose VDO, KE, JS, and CBV for CI !

OK, so House wasn't the right example.
Would the Simpsons still be the same without Homer, Marge (sp?) and Bart?

Would Alaska be the same without Sarah Palin? Oh wait, it would. Probably for the better. Sorry, bad example.

OK, so House wasn't the right example. Would the Simpsons still be the same without Homer, Marge (sp?) and Bart? Again, "The Simpson's," like "House," is named for/after the characters. LOCI is not named for a specific character. A good example would be SVU - which is strongly identified with Benson and Stabler, even though there are and have been other Detectives (Munch, for example). I think the show could survive with other leads, but NBC won't take that chance.

I think the show could survive with other leads, but NBC won't take that chance. - I was thinking the same thing.
I wonder how different the show will be. I wonder - but I don't think I could venture a peek at it. I've never heard of these new leading ladies. Have either of them been in other crime dramas?

...[H]is performance and dedication to his craft was something never experienced or witnessed on network television. For he is the Kwisatz Haderach (of network TV drama)! ;-) AL P.S. Patcat has it right. Additionally, VDO wasn't the first choice for Goren. Not that it matters anymore. If this actor can move on, why can't we?

Who?
If he wasn't who was? I thought that came from Dick Wolf himself.

AL and others can correct me, but I recall that Liev Schrieber was one of the people considered for Goren. And these may be hallucinatory images sparked by heaven knows what, but I also have some dim, foggy brain cell insisting that Jeff Goldblum was in the running and maybe William Peterson.
AL--Are you comparing VDO with Kyle McLachlan?(g)

I also read that Liev Schreiber was Dick Wolf's initial choice, but he was unavailable. Both actors are very similar in looks and charisma. ;D

And I think both have played Orson Welles.

I totally don't see Liev Schreiber in that role. Watched him on CSI for a few eps. He was okay.

Regardless of which actor(s) was originally considered to play Goren, and regardless of whether that character was the one on which the show was built, it's undeniably clear that the Criminal Intent show came to be about him and his spiraling into both depression and madness while trying to maintain his career. I wrote in my first post here that I believed that the entire show was basically a story arc involving the Goren character, I still believe that and while their have been other memorable characters and of course the addition of the entire separate cast, the show was and is about Goren.
To me the show failed when it started doing the kinds of things that other episodic shows do, dropping characters, stretching too far into areas outside it's mandate, look at SVU for many examples of this. I liked the original idea of the show being written for a 5 year arc, which is the original amount of time Mr. D'Onofrio signed on for, it is a testament to his talents that the show still had some wings under it beyond that. Frankly, as much as I enjoy the show, it could have ended after those original 5 years and it would still be considered one of the best shows to have aired on commercial television.
I would have liked to have seen where Goren was in his life then with writers who knew that they only had 5 seasons to tell his story.
