Gee guys, I'm kinda touched - I didn't think to get any of this well wishing response when I posted that. I'm just slugging away trying to create a better job opportunity and such. But the words really warmed me - thanks.

Doctorj, I think the pack leader thing only works on dogs. good grief! are ya sure? -- that explains why no one's responding to me when i start in with the high-pitched whistling. guess i'll have to come up with a new way to win friends and influence people. congrats to catbird and metella! and best wishes to you as you start your advanced degrees.

Doctorj, give em a tap on the hip with your foot to get their attention like Cesar does! Course I would imagine humans might take this a little more personally than dogs! ;D
Actually, I am happy to report the "rehabilitation" efforts are working surprisingly well on the older tsih tsu, but the beagle puppy..... well she might come along in 3 or 4 more years! Actually the older dog has always been pretty well behaved etc, but she likes to growl and try to beg food if we are eatting in the living room (which is more often than not) and this evening she just laid there (silently) watching us. So I guess you can teach old dogs new tricks! The trick seems to be consistency on the humans part.

Speaking of tsih-tsus, I found a little black one a couple of days ago as I was walking home from work. He had a collar but no name tag. He came right up to me and laid on its stomach. This in minues 20 degree weather!. I picked him up. He was shivering like a leaf and I knocked on a few of the neighbours with no answer. Since it couldn't last out there, I took him home which was just a few doors away. It freaked my cat out for about an hour until the Humane society sent an officer over to pick him up. He was cute but I now know little dogs are not for me. They're too frantic.
It turns out he escaped from someone's yard and my dad was at the 7-11 the next day and saw a poster for him so we called and they said they had been looking for him all night and their little boy wouldn't go to school for missing him. awww. Anyway the puppy had a spa day. My cat was Ticked and my dad tried to take pictures of him as a keepsake.

Oh Im so glad you rescued the lost puppy to keep him safe for the night and his people could find him! He sounds like a cutie. I was hesitant about a little dog as well (I cant stand hyper yippie little dogs) but ours is actually very much the opposite, which is just right for me and my mom as we are fairly sedentary. And you can still thump on her and she doesn't whine and fall over like other little dogs do. ;D I will say though that this cold snap certainly speeds the potty process: she is far less picky of the exact spot to go outside in this really cold weather. No horsing around out there whatsoever! Mine is due for the groomers and does NOT appreciate spa days, she will sulk the rest of the day!

Sirenna: my dad-in-law used to refer to small dogs as armpit warmers (he was a German Shepherd guy) but he warmed his armpits plenty with a pekapoo in his older years. Shih Tzus can be lovely dogs, sweet and a bit clownish, glad your foundling got home safe.

thanks everyone,
the cat seems fine and will probably only hold this against me the next time he wants something. The tsih-tzu was cute though - all long ears and friendly disposition.

Yes Sirenna, you did the right thing for the lost puppy. It's good to hear all ended well. Your cat should get a bonus treat or two if he holds your good deed against you for long.

Thanks for the good wishes, everybody. Unfortunately most of thr programs I liked had 1) impossibly early deadlines or 2) required a background in a field other than history. So there is a poosibility that I need to take off for a year and work/catch up on pre-requisites, but we'll see. And thanks for the warm wishes/congratulations, hooray for support networks!
And Sirenna, poor puppy! I'm glad there was a happy ending for everybody.

Naw - catbird - just go in and talk to the department head - explain why you want to enter their wonderful program & do your research beforehand & 2 out of 3 times you will be accepted - they are flexible. Maybe promise to take a certain course or two in your first year ...
