Ok, I'll need to see this a couple of times, but my first reaction is that it was givling brilliant.
The next to last scene, with Goren staring at his own reflection and his mentor, was wonderfully set up.
And the very last scene, with Goren in Eames' hospital room, was terrific.

Like OF warned, it's not my daddy's CI, but it wasn't bad. I liked it, but you guys know I don't want to see the personal stuff come out very much, so I hope this was just a *bang* to start the season and draw in some of those SVU fans.

It was a very different and very intense episode (I guess you have to make a splash on a new night). I figured out who was behind it all pretty early but it was still an interesting story.
What I liked was Eames rather ingeniously staging her own escape instead of just being a damsel in distress.
Eric Bogosian was a lot of fun too.
Only down spot was the cheesy "stalker cam."

And away we go... Season 6 is here, baby and I am feeling fine! ;D As Patcat pointed out this episode had some very poignant shots - I liked Ross and Goren together - And loved Eames' "MacGuyver" action. This episode sets up the whole "Bobby gets exisential" and Alex gets some "color" trip very nicely... but didn't get too soapy. All in all, a definite thumbs up!! caseyswife

This episode was a shot in the arm for a CI -- a brilliant, well-told, well-executed episode that was one of the best in years! The series is officially resurrected!!! Can't wait till next week.

I saw Jo coming at the halfway mark. At first I went for the "It's the mentor--no wait, that's too easy". When the phone was found in Declan's briefcase I knew it was the daughter. Martha Plimpton was amazingly creepy at the end, but really she didn't do that much before then. But that little closed-mouth smile and head tilt at the end; lord she looked like some evil demented little elf.
I was talking Eames through the house at the end. "OK, stay calm, stay calm, come on Eames--good job! Don't panic, stay with it..." Thank God we didn't see the torture. Kathryn Erbe took my breath away during those scenes. (Is "colors of Eames" going to refer to PTSD and psych counseling? I'd love to see her with Skoda, and I think that kind of character work makes sense in the context of the show.)
God I miss Deakins. What I would have given to see him and Goren together during this. And it would have been nice to see Carver's professional sympathy and concern break bad in the interrogation room while questioning Declan.
Poor Goren, his mentor turns out to be the very father he himself despises. I liked the closing shot of him in Eames' room; especially since he and Eames seemed to be closer/more sympathetic to each other in this episode. He actually talked to her about Declan ("he wants me to redeem him"), and there was some melancholy understanding in their conversations before the kidnapping. (Why do I suddenly flash to DOnkey in Shrek: "But-cha gotta have frien...ds!" Sorry.)
The new captain seems an interesting character. I liked how he picked up on Gage's coldness to his daughter, and how he didn't question the text message but went straight into action. He also didn't get his panties in a wad when it turned necessary to consult Declan; pissing wars and turf fights become secondary. While defnitely setting up authority and "I'm in charge", which is only necessary in that setting and position. To quote my father, you can be a hardass without being an asshole (sorry, Daddy's crude). What the heck is his name? Ross?

PS: Blucougar, what do you mean? We normally don't bother with spoiler warnings after the episode airs, or are you asking for a plot summary?
ETA: Another Moby Dick reference--first Nicole, now the mentor? Don't tell me big brother GOren's name is Ishmael.
I didn't like the blurry jerky camera during the killing, too distracting and not the CI I like. Music was interesting, the Synthesizer Percussion of Dramatic Tension popped up more than usual, but also I noticed some vocals underneath. Just "ah" chords that I could make out, but you don't normally hear that in TV. Very atmospheric and mournful.
Also, did anybody notice the movie marquee as the two girls came out before the second killing? "The Bad Sleep". I thought that a nice touch.

My first impressions are that it was a very intense episode, even in spite of the fact that I figured out it was Jo about half-way through.
I was very worried about the whole Eames kidnap part of the plot, but thought it was handled well. Thank goodness she freed herself and wasn't rescued by Goren.
This may just be my Deakins longing, but I didn't cotton to the new Captain.
Glover as Goren's mentor was terrific! A totally self-absorbed Svengali, who got off on seeing his own reflection in Goren. Sadly, his daughter was right on when it came to what it would take to get his attention. And the fact that Declan was breeding a little serial killer under his own roof would naturally escape him, since his world of extreme good and extreme evil didn't include women.
I kind of thought the last scene was a waste, and would've liked it to pack more of a punch. Some hint of how Goren felt about learning that his mentor's daughter was the killer. Not necessarily in dialoge, but just some clue as to whether Goren was feeling guilty or wounded or a combination, or just some clue about how he was processing the outcome of the case.

As always, I need to rewatch it. I enjoyed it, did anyone noticed that the boyfriend of the first girl murdered was Carlos Leon (madonna's ex) and he was in the "Best Defense" ep from Season 2, about the husband and wife who where lawyers. I thought Goren showed passion! and when the Eames cell phone was found in the mentors bag, I knew it was the daughter. but you know what bother me the most?? was Goren's black pants and gray suit jacket. What gives Bobby, You never leave your home looking so shabby for work! I liked it.....glad to see them back!! and did anyone noticed that Rene Balcer was the Consulting Producer

and did anyone noticed that Rene Balcer was the Consulting Producer I did. I wonder if Balcer still looks at every script and has input. It wouldn't surprise me if that's the case. Actually, I'd be curious to know what Balcer thinks of all the changes.

Bobby did look pretty choked up at the end - for Bobby. I liked it - I think it would have been a little sappy if he had broken down or gone completely out of the loop.

Inside scoop: Balcer is "Consulting Producer" only in name. He really has little input, if any.

hello. first post. i loved this as the season opener, but don't think i can take such dark episodes every single week.
didn't really like bogosian as the new captain, either. though i have liked him in other things. i just don't buy him as a cop or as boss to goren and eames.
