Wow what a great episode!
I am so looking forward to this season. There was so much material to work with for all three actors. And they soared with it.
I also much say that I loved the camera work. Most of all, the music was mucho improved.
I came away deeply touched and disturbed at the same time. It takes a lot for me to get emotionally involved in any television show, but this did it for me.

I didn't get to see much of this one as I was running back and forth from two TV's. On one was the tribute to Steve Irwin and the other CI, of course. The fam only watched the tribute, and I was the headless chicken running back and forth. From what I did see, I don't think the ep was all that dark, I don't think it went overboard. Story was solid and strong. Good choice for a seaon opener. Loved Eames' great escape. I couldn't imagine Eames being "rescued". Eames escaping showcases the intelligent, grit and cool that she has. Loved the no soap. Didn't love the egomaniac new caption. (That's how he came across to me anyway.) I think he was unneedlessly hostile towards Goren. I'd love to see Logan put him him in his place. I don't like Logan but he would be the perfect candidate for the job. I'm assuming he's pulling the typical "Im boss now" and will cool it after a bit. ADA Casey Novak (SVU, replaced much loved and much grieved over ADA Cabot) was at first hostile and unlikeable but her character progressed nicely and now I love her. So I'll think positive and wait and see. I think it's also natural to look for any flaw in the new captian given the attachment had to Deakins. This new guy will have to work to earn any attachment/respect and hopefully he will, just like Novak did. I don't recall his name either. Ross? Goss? ... And to my own amusement, I found Declan incredibly annoying. Oh, according to my captioning, Eames' parrot is named Polly. "Polly wanna cracker?"

Little nitpick: why was Goren active on Eames kidnaping? (I mean story-wise, not suck the viewer in for ratings tension.) Shouldn't he have been taken off out of concerns for objectivity, professionalism, etc.? --Catbird Maybe Ross recognised that removing Goren from the investigation would only lead to him going renegade. By allowing him to be a part of it, it would have let Ross keep an eye on Goren. (Just speculating, after avidly devouring every word that's ben written here. ;D ) (And the new captain's name is Danny Ross...)

I just rewatched and couldn't help but notice Eames when she said the line: "He wanted me to scream, so I didn't." She turned and glanced at Goren when she said it. The way that came across to me was her way of telling Bobby of his influence in her escape from the killer. Would the Eames of seasons past have had that insight into the criminal mind without Goren?? She didn't need him to rescue her, but in a way he helped her escape... I guess that is the best way I can think to put it. Hope I am not rambling - had a bad bout with the back pain today and am loaded on painkillers! caseyswife *P.S. And to all my fellow Vixens I say: check out Bobby's arm stopping that elevator!

Martha Plimpton was amazingly creepy at the end, but really she didn't do that much before then. But that little closed-mouth smile and head tilt at the end; lord she looked like some evil demented little elf. That look, in fact her entire facial features, should be very familiar. MP's real name and sometimes screen credit is Martha Carradine--she's Keith's daughter, David's niece, and John's granddaughter.

I noticed that this is the second time that Charlie Rubin teams up with director Norberto Barba. Result: GREAT!! First time was "Diamond Dogs," another solid outing.

Thanks for reminding me of the arm in the elevator shot! I think I uttered a low hello. Whoosh!

What a perfectly titled episode. Begin with the obvious blind spot, that of Declan Gage's with his daughter. Follow with all of his blind spots, including his failure to recognize that Bobby Goren wasn't a recreation of his mentor (Thank goodness). There's Goren's blind spot regarding his mentor's abilities as a father, one that fortunately for the case and perhaps less fortunately for Goren, disappeared through the episode. There's the new captain's blind spot regarding Goren--one that I also think was somewhat disspelled. There's Jo's blind spot regarding Eames' toughness and abilities. And finally, there's the literal blindness Eames undergoes when she's blindfolded.
There's also the use of light to blind and to illuminate. Near the start of the episode, the viewer is blinded by the flash of the helicopter searchlight; near the end, Goren's flashlight shining out at the viewer signals the solution of the case.
I have to say that I suspected the daughter from several of the previews, and my suspicions were strengthened by the first scene in which we saw Gage and his daughter. But the story was played out brilliantly.
I believe that Ross would keep Goren on the case if only for the link to Gage, who was their main suspect.

I just re watched this this morning, making me late for work, but a girl has to have her priorities. I should just copy and paste Techguy's post, I agree with him completely. I knew it was Jo from the preview clips, my first impression when I heard the plot-line was that it was Declan, but after seeing his brush-off of his daughter in favor of Goren, I knew who and why. Someone before said they would have liked more of a reaction from Goren when Jo confessed, but I think it was perfect, the sadness and regret he showed of having not noticed her home life before and also of his mentor falling off the pedestal. I actually liked the new captain very much, from the preview clips I was afraid he was going to be unrealistically antagonistic, but I felt he was just marking his new territory, I loved Eames' nod when he told her to keep Goren in check, it was a yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's the way it's going to be kind of thing and then she turns around and tells him, I can't wait to see him with Logan, who has a hard time with new people in general, and bad-ass captains in particular. Well my boss just put some work in my in-box, so I'd better log off for now. All I can say, is: Phewww and Yes!

I glad there are so posts before I got here. I thought that maybe my lust for the new season would blind how I felt about the show. But most of you have confirmed my feelings. I loved it. VOD shined as Goren. I think it was one of his best performances. And Eames, I'm so proud of her. I really liked that she got out on her own. Though I have to admit, I hated seeing her hanging there. It was hard to watch her in pain.
Other thoughts, I don't care for the new captain. Maybe he will get better. But starting off with such an attitude about Goren wasn't fair. If he has such a bug about Goren's methods, wait till he meets Logan.
Declan was a disappointment, all the way around. As a profiler, I wasn't impressed and as a father, well enough has been said.
Jo, creepy from the start. Imagine those dates with her. I bet no one ever asked her out twice.
Re: the arm in the elevator- I nearly jumped off the couch. When I got on the elevator at work this morning, I immediately thought about that scene.
Re: Goren working on finding Eames, I wouldn't want to be the one to tell him he "couldn't" help find Eames!
Anyway, the start of Season 6 is off with a bang and I'm ready for more. One thing, doesn't it seem weird to be watching on a Tuesday?

I liked the new music - it was emotional without stealing the attention.
I liked the new captain; I think at this point he doesn't like Goren's style and may be suspicious about his good case closing record. He also wants to clearly define the hierarchy borders of his job. I like the way he was straightforward with his pushing on Eames & Goren - but when there was the incident with Eames, he MOVED immediately without grilling Goren on what he knew, when & how. So I give him the OK.
I didn't care for the lighting and angles in the opening shots and the murder shots - too over the top dramtic & didn't fit with CI.
The story line held well, and I have always been fond of the outside scenes.
I am also ready for more.

Bravo! Great Episode.
I had some reservations about the new captain, but he redeemed himself when Goren told him Declan knew Sebastian best.
I hate to admit, I wasn't as quick to catch on that it was Jo as most of you were.
Eames shined, loved her escape and that she didn't need to be rescued. It was nice to see a glimpse of her apartment!
Declan Gage, Goren's mentor, the epitome of the absentee father, one of the very things that drives Goren..such irony.
Goren was very upset, but his reaction was perfect. Just enough emotion to be real.
Loved the closing shot in the hospital.
Terrific episode, can't wait to watch it again!

cifan, I think alot of us had Jo tagged as the killer ahead of time, or early in the episode because we've seen/watched so much about this episode over the past several weeks. At least, that's why I think I figured it out. During the long, LOCI-less months, there wasn't much else to do but dissect the various promos. I heard Polly, too for the bird. Kinda wonder what Jo did with it.
