Well, what did the brass expect her to do? I mean, her partner was fighting off a dozen brawny firefighters. I truly believe that she feared for Logan's life. Hence, the emergency call.
Don't know if there's a less urgent code you can call in that situation. Maybe they just wanted her to call for back up, which would have been only two more cops to fight off an entire firehouse of tough guys.
I think she did the right thing.

Didn't realize I was the last person to post on this episode almost a year ago. Well, I was able to catch this one again during the marathon. After seeing it again, I now believe that Wheeler did try to protect Logan as best she could. I was impressed with her diligence in the second brawl scene, she kept trying to get back into the pile, but this one firefighter kept her cornered & out of it. I guess he was trying to protect her, who knows? However, it's obvious that she isn't trained well in self-defense. She needs some work in that area. Or was the brawl too much for any woman to really help in? I know some people like this new "voice of reason" Logan that we've been exposed to this season. IDK, I miss this Logan - the guy who couldn't help but give back some lip in that firehouse. It wasn't diplomatic or logical, but it's the Logan I know (& enjoy). ;D

You know I don't think that anyone wants Logan to totally give up being the "old" Logan. I know I enjoy seeing Logan going off on someone who really needs going off on.

The mothership Logan is still there in Season 7. He was ready to give Felix the old 'what-for' in "Senseless". I thought Ross was rushing into the interrogation room to pull him back, but instead Ross went into the other room to lay down the law there.
Nix that. I think I've got my eppies mixed here. I've had the good fortune to watch six newies in a row and they've all started to blur... Too much of a good thing.

I saw this episode for the first time yesterday and rewatched the beginning this morning.
It might be interesting to note that around here, the Maltese Cross is one of three organizations that provides EMT care. Which is why the title was changed I guess, though it usually is.
Anyway - I really liked this ep. It was a little lacking on the intent part (like why exactly would the gay doc go crazy if someone left him?), but overall the story was told effectively and I liked how it developed. The flashback was new, but nice.
There were many funny things in this ep that just cracked me up. The tree-climb-line, the donut, mother knows best, the discrepancy in file size, Logan snatching the food from Wheeler, the "closed" case and Wheeler therefore playing naive...
Many people have commented on Wheeler in that first infamous scene, and upon rewatching I noticed something odd. Wheeler calls for backup even before the situation really gets bad. At the point she first calls 10-13, Logan and Charlie are "pushy" at best and the firefighters try to keep them apart (and Logan even gets the chance to walk away!!). I wonder whether her call for assistance might have escalated the situation. It's only after the first call though that the real fighting starts and it takes a while until the other firefighters start beating up Logan. And I also thought that she really tried to get into it, but was unsuccessful. She definitely took a share of the beating.
I really liked how the story developed. I only noticed afterwards, but remember how they find out that none of the 22 stab-wounds had hit vital arteries? That really should've pointed one towards the doctor. I actually was very suspicious about him when he first was on screen (and I got the definitve gay vibe from him although he didn't really do anything that one would perceive to be "gay-like-behavoir" - sorry, I didn't mean to sound like a cliché). But then I sort of "forgot" about him. Smart storytelling, because along with the stab-wounds & ties I was like "jeez, how could I miss that" when they pinned it on the doc. Logan going to look for the glove & baseball and concluding that they had only taken the bats, Logan noticing the ties, the way the played the suspect in an collaborate effort, and Logan getting the firefighter to cooperate so Logan would forget who threw the first punch... I really liked how they made the suspect confess. That was very, very CI-like. And it was great acting, because you can see how he starts losing his temper bit by bit. That make his kinda "rage"-killing ever the more plausible, too.
Ross had a few great scenes - especially were he talked about gay rage and the one where he explained the firefighter family. I would actually think that all three branches, fire dep., police dep. and the military follow a "Don't ask, don't tell" - policy when it comes to gay people.
I like that Ross is acitvely involved - I will have to look for the board and the magnets on another viewing, though. And I must say that Bogosians eyes now have captivated me... Can't help but notice the color in every scene.
There definitely where many clichés in that episode... Anybody take note of the red-haired firefighter? Or the victim's name being Ian Duffy? Or the black kids that showed kinda gangster-like behavior? And I'm not even going into gay clichés... though I liked that they portrayed more "offensive" and less "offensive" gays alike and how difficult it is for them no matter what.
I also liked that the episode ended on a positive note with the mother saying that she'd not hide the truth from her child. I wondered about that at the first second, too, but then I realized, that she probably felt he was a hero not only because he defended gays or was a 9/11 hero and fought for those people, but because he was gonna stick to her once he heard she was pregnant. He was going to take full responsibility for his child.
