I wonder if we will start the new season with talk of Frank's funeral?
Well, I loved this one from beginning to end. It had lots of turns and twists. Bobby's multiple torment and his love for his mentor. When he was questioning Gage, there was a moment when it seemed he understood why he did it. He loved Bobby, crazy love, but love. Probably the one person who actually loved him. If Gage had not gone nuts, he would have been the father Bobby needed. The one person who really understood him. His misguided love hurts even worse.
I think that they finally killed Nicole because it does give Goren a new, fresh season this fall. Glad she is gone and this monkey is off his back. I am just sad Gage had to be the one to do it.
Glad Frank is gone, though I had hoped the meeting at the beginning of the show was for real. Unfortunately, addiction is a strong, manipulative monster. It takes good people and makes them into awful human beings.
Now Bobby can deal with fighting crime and restoring his reputation. I think that Eames has more sympathy for him now. She was on his side the whole show and that was good.
I think over all, it was the best show of the season. I did love Bobby doing

Opps, sorry a fire alarm went off here in my hotel room and had to get off. Things are ok now.
Anyway, I loved him doing magic. Ok, now I do have to leave... I will check in later.

A telling scene......Frank in his hovel smoking that crack pipe. When the knock at the door gets him up and moving he takes a few bits of trash and throws it to the side, covers his drug stuff and (the best part) bops over to the door like a hungry man who's been waiting for his pizza.

Pretty good so far as the melodrama of the past 2 seasons has gone. I gather that the writer's pretty much intend to have wrapped up the *big* loose ends with this one. No more NW (thank Christ), Frank, Mom, Dad, Declan or Jo Gage to consider. Donnie is a wildcard. They can leave that sleeping dog to lie, or kick him if ratings drop, lol. His mother was well cast, I thought. Hit the right note, as upstanding a person as could have gone for FRank.
Goren is really fat. No two ways about it. That guy needs a gastric bypass. That said, they have already begun the transformation back to his old self. He was wearing a suit in the final scene after wearing basically the same damn outfit in each of the last 4 episdoes I have seen (and I think I've missed one or two). The lighting of that scene was so transformative, it HAD to have been deliberate. They don't usually use that subtle kind of technique in TV; nicely done.
I take it Ross and Rodgers have broken up.
The writers seemed to want to put any ideas about shipping to rest. After using some vague references over the past year, it is absolutely clear now that G&E do not have a *personal* relationship. Their professional relatiponship seems heading back to where it should be. They have both let the opther down somewhat, and now they can get back to being a good working team.
I like that NW is gone, and not by BGs hand. Good one. Mostly I just like that she is gone once and for all!
Frank's end was inevitable. BG's known that all along. He can relax now. He'll be sad, but mostly relieved. Ironic that Frank bedded NW and BG never did, lol.
MFB being the real baby daddy is a nonstarter to me. I never cared about that angle because I didn't like that episode much. I hope it doesn't keep coming up. It seems irrelevant. BG doesn't kill people. Hell, he can hardly pull his gun in the line of duty! The *REAL BG uses intellect, not violence. A point aparently lost on Leight & Co.
Rodgers looks great. She was great in this episode. She honored her committment to BGs privacy while looking out for his safety at the same time. Covered his ass after his temper tantrum. Class act. Now that his personal angst has been tied up with a pretty bow, I hope we don't have to see that sort of childish behavior from him again. It is so UN-Goren like. The writers of season 5, 6, and 7 obviously never watched season 1,2, or 3.
Frances Goren's birthday was in the middle of winter, complete with a homeless guy freezing to death in BG's coat during the episode (!) in Brother's Keeper. Her birthday has now mysteriously moved to warm summer months. Jeeze people, even w/o doink doink and date cards (would like to have those back btw, now that Leight is gone) that is a glaring gaffe. Am I the only person on plant Wolf to care about continuiity?
All in all, a fairly good ep. I really think/hope that next season will be old school CI. Both Goren and Goldblum will hopefully be like the Goren of old; quirky genuises who entertain while solving a crime (remember those writers, the CRIMES from the point of view of the CRIMINAL'S INTENT, ahem). I am looking forward to it for the first time in several seasons.
We ALL (characters, fans, writers!) have a clean slate, we are ALL free. Onward season 8!

lovesong, thanks for mentioning the seasonal change with the birthday. I caught that too.
Something must have been dropped during editing. How did G/E know how to go to that particular B&B? And the woman was expecting Goren. I assume Gage booked the room, but what happened between Phoenix and Pittsfield? Did Goren get a call confirming his reservation?

Lovesong--why do you think Ross and Rodgers have broken up? I admit I might have missed something with everything going on, but I didn't see any indication they've broken up. Now, after this, they may break up.
Moonbeam--you've caught some of my problems with Gage's plans. It's my only problem with this episode.
The birthday--obviously an error, but perhaps Bobby wanted to celebrate one with his mother before she passed away and held it early?

Just a comment to other comments first
Deathroe-Joe didn't die, she is in a comma, she could still wake up. Or did they announce later she died, and I missed it?
Patcat-Since Gage knew so much about Bobby waiting so long to do the paternity results, and Goren asking him why didn't you tell the Captain, made me feel maybe he was still in contact with Gage, why, I wonder. It might have not been often, since he didn't see the deteriation, or know about the food poisioning.
Frank was really a louse, Donny's mom saying to Goren, that Frank said Bobby wouldn't or couldn't do anything for Donny! Geez, no he almost lost his job, got locked up in jail for Donny. I don't think Frank even went to AA to try and clean up, he wanted people to listen to him and feel sorry for him. Frank is a people user, if he wanted to find out where his mother was burried he could find out. He didn't want to talk to Bobby cause he didn't need him for anything at the moment. He didn't care where Donny was. Just used his mom for money. Not saying he deserved to die, but Bobby and the CI world will be better without him, and so Will Donny.
Also I would like to say, I think in the Real world, Goren would be fired by now. He needs to go back to Olivet, learn how to better channel his anger.

About the B and B, did it have something to do with the name? Was it linked to Moby Dick? I would have to go back and look. I never read it.

When G and E look at the postmark on Gwen's letter (Pittsfield, MA), Bobby says that's where Melville wrote Moby Dick. I'm pretty sure the inn we see has Pequod in the name....I got the impression they were visiting inns and motels in the area to ask about Nicole.
Seems like Bobby had told Dec all about his dealings with Nicole, so he would've known the symbolism. Even Ross said, "They call her your 'white whale'."

Oh, everyone in the L&O universe would've been fired by now. Especially Stabler. And Jack (G)
Yea, I'm not sure about how much and what contact Goren and Gage have had. On one hand, it doesn't seem to be much, and on the other, Gage has to know a lot about Goren for his plan to go into operation.
I really liked Mr. D'Onofrio's work in this episode. Throughout much of the story, he's numb, almost shell shocked, so his explosion is all the more unsettling. As an actor, Mr. D'Onofrio really does rage well. Someone else mentioned Mr. Bogosian's fine work in not flinching, and I second that. I nearly jumped out of my chair when Bobby came at Ross in the Captain's office.

The Pequod and her crew, commanded by Captain Ahab, figure prominently in the story, which after the initial chapters takes place nearly entirely aboard the ship during a long three-year whaling expedition in the South Pacific and Indian Oceans. Most of the characters in the novel are part of the crew of the ship, including the narrator Ishmael.

So not allowed (by my own rules) to be on these boards at work, but
Ragin, good catch on Jo potentially being alive. Tho her dying would help with the clean slate, it was just wish fulfillment, I guess. Lovesong, yes VDO is heavy, but these comments make me kind of sensitive. A lot of men of that general background look pretty much like that as they age. I think he's aging gracefully. TG--the "Engage" comment is pure genius.
Such cool comments from everyone. Much love here.

As deathroe and I were discussing on another thread – the thread about how the new twists will affect Eames – I felt it was time someone told Robert Goren what an amazing person he was…….
He needed to have his life validated and that validation articulated by someone whose opinion he valued.
Although not as general as I would have imagined, at last, the acknowledgement came. His selfless relationship with his family was articulated. And he thanked him for saying it!
And that is what really hit me. Goren’s thank you was profound.
But look who said it. The knife was shoved in a little deeper.
I tell you, I’m not my chirpy little self today…..
