Gee, Sirenna, I thought I was cynical (g).
Just a note--be nice to the people who work in the stores, especially the cashiers. Try to remember that they can't do anything about corporate policies, and many of them are as stressed as you are.

Not a cynic - a realist

ha ha so what is the general take on re-gifting?
I'm for it if you get a gift that is nice, but is so not you .... AND you give it to a person that you honesty feel would like that gift. Just the gift shuffle is lazy and well, kinda disrespectful.

Re-gifting? Never. But if it's something nice and I don't need another of "it", I usually offer it to one of my nieces. Or I put in the next goodwill pickup. Birthday greetings to all of you born in December.

I share Metella's view. Many thanks and then quietly give the things to someone who will appreciate them. It just gets tricky if it is a very nice something-not-you that comes from relatives. Like jewelery, which I can't stand to wear myself but my grandmother has picked out some nice pieces that I can't get rid of. (At least I have a set of dainty delicate pearls, like any self-respecting Southern belle, should the need arise.) My aunt gave all the nieces bracelets for participating in her wedding, so I kind of had to wear it at the ceremony. Ugh.
I just hate stores that only do store credit when you can't use anything from the store! cough-Bath-and-Body-Works!-cough. No offense to fans or employees, because it is nice stuff that smells good but my skin is too sensitive. Especially annoying because it's the fallback option for a girl-gift so I always end up with half a ton of the stuff. Sorry, rant done.
I just want to curl up with a Christmas movie, but I have to write a five-page response to neurology mess. What the heck kind of analysis can you do for Peptide A fits Receptor 23? "Umm, sounds right to this ignorant history major."

Ah, that Peptide A is created by a codeon gene that is right next to the structural genes for recept 23 and that it is a self regulating negative biofeedback loop - a totally amazing, delicate, and indepent action brought on by over 100 million years of self replicating nucleaic acids. Now that is a story with a happy ending.

You mean the random things I just pulled out of my butt to complain have some meaning? Wow, guess the stuff stuck in my head better than I thought. Still, give me narratives and people any day. I love you scientists and technical types, but sure ain't one of you. (At least history majors find some great stories!)

Ok, Metella, I'm curious and have to ask: You've sold me on the beauty of a Peptide A. But why is the evolution of a self regulating negative biofeedback loop such a " totally amazing, delicate, and independent action" - in other words what's in it for me?

Well - what is in for YOU is that you is that sweet little peptide had stared out it's life's function as,say .... a claw. but after years of disuse, breaking on tree trunks, having hang nails bother it .... it is now a lovely long red & white tipped french nail. It never gave up and decided if didn't need to be a claw ..... it was still going to enhance its whole envirnment by offering itself up for buffing and painting. ha ! Actually - in research with how the retina is formed from embrio on - and cross referencing it with how the octopuss eye develops - it was found that those genes are actually nearly the SAME - even though they lead to eyes that function very differently. These eyes were thought to have evolved separately - but now that is being challanged. Quiet a tale - really. Well, for me.

Well, if you're interested, Metella, the book we just finished was Molecules of Emotion by Candice Pert. It swings back and forth between the science research and her personal memoir as a woman in a man's field, connecting with spiritual wisdom (she gets a bit New Age-y in places). Convinced of her own importance, but you'd probably get more out of it than I did. Next up for us is Future of the Brain.
Had our chorus concert tonight; off campus so driving downtown/parking was a bit of a hassle. But the church sanctuary was gorgeous with good acoustics. (Daddy cracked that the four-way surround sound with us spread throughout the balconies was Quadrophenia.) And somehow we pulled together the one song that really needed to be yanked into something pretty good, so hoorah! Yay also for parents taking me out to dinner and a CD/amoretto balls/Charlie Brown mug gift set to get me through the last week.

Now catbird, you are teasing my tastebuds with the amaretto balls references--are they anything like whiskey candy? Is it a Secret Family Recipe, or will you share it? (And not have to kill me afterwards...) Tell this musicmanic what piece you and your chorus struggled with, you know I have to know. ;D

Mmmmm, amaretto balls... I just had gorgonzola cheesecake for the first time last night, and it was so fabulous I've been searching for a recipe that seems similar so I can try my hand at making it myself. Oh, Catbird, I feel you on the girly gifts....I have SUPER sensitive skin and I'm allergic to perfume. I can't tell you how many things I've had to regift or chuck in the garbage. I'm only willing to explain my various allergies so many times before I just give up Psstt...Sarahlee, that green type doesn't show up at all on the standard blue background. I have to highlight your posts just to read them.
