As a writer myself, I have to say that if I were taking on a character like Goren, who was well established over a period of years, I'd be doing everything I could do research the show and do that "homework". I do realize, however, that time may be a factor in some cases, but I do think that if you are going to bring a character to life on the page, you have to eat, sleep, and breathe them (as much as you're able). And in the case of Goren and Eames, continuity is important because they have a long history on the show. And us fans have even longer memories!

I remember making the comment that I lowered my expectations as the series progressed. Maybe, another TV show's fanbase would bypass such anomolies in their show - but that's not LO:CI or it's fans! Really, you had to lower your expectations? Ouch that isn't what we look for in a new viewer at all. Did you see season 7? What did you think of it? I hate to say it so bitterly, but maybe the writers are looking for second-rate fans who are used to CSI: Miami level scripts. The same thing happened to a very clever TV-driven website I still frequent that was bought out and went lowest-common-denominator quality so fast my head spun. I used to love their recaps, now I just post on the forums and wish the buyers no joy from their purchase.

What do we look for in a new viewer? Is there criteria? Most tv shows do lose their steam as time goes on, not that that makes shoddy writing acceptable. Season 8 has been disapointing to a lot of people.

I don't think it's as easy to write an established character, especially when you try to please a crowd of fans that by no means is "homogeneous". Or let's say it differently - you will write Goren one way and some will like it, some will not. Forgive me me for beating a dead horse - just look at well written fanfiction - I think one of the most fascinating things is that some people seem to see these characters completely different from me, as evidenced in their writing.
Lastly, I'd like to stress the fact that it's not necessarily the writer's version that ends up on screen unaltered. There's at least the director and the actor interjecting their interpretation "in between".

Thanks OBC, thanks Tjara - you made me see some things clearer! I would love to see an interview with one of the CI-writers on that topic once.....I have frankly no idea how exactly the job description or the job approach of a professional writer is. That should be really interesting (and keep amateurs like me from judging people before knowing how tight their shoes may be.....).

If you look around on the board, there's interviews with Stephanie Sengupta (two, if I call correctly) and Gina Gionfriddo, both of which have written for CI. These interviews are quite interesting.

I do believe that Rene Balcer left Goren more accessible for another writer to take over the character. However, Warren Leight left Goren so complicated and rent asunder - bear in mind the fans' memories - it would be difficult for any new writer(s) to cover all the bases. I believe that alot of questions from the previous season were not answered in this one. So much WORD to that. ;D A new writer for the show, bearing in mind time constraints, would probably watch last season's G/E episodes and go from there. That leaves out a good amount of Goren's idiosyncrasies and story lines from the Balcer years that we fans still look for. And in trying to heal Goren, the writers needed to put aside some lingering, angst provoking issues. Like the whole Donny storyline. Maybe they'll revisit that later next season. Hopefully much later.

Warren Leight was told by DW to END the Goren angst in S7, before leaving as head writer. The new writers have taken Goren back to being just a cop again in S8, which he was. Everybody hated the on going problem Bobby in S7, is there anybody here that hasnt seen S7

I think it would've made more sense if this episode had come directly after "Major Case." I may be alone in that thought, but I think it would've made more sense to have Goren in Tennesse for two weeks in a row than have her working with them both like that. You took the words right out of my mouth mwendyr! I loved the episode but, Goren's absence from this episode was ridiculous, if the Eames/Goldblum episodes ran as the last two of the season I think it would have made more sense.

I've always enjoyed CI but, Seasons 6 and 7 really made me feel for the characters. I'm not saying I want Goren's struggles to continue in Season 9, not at all, I want my favorite detective back in Season 9 shining like a new penny.

Caitlen--Do you have an interview or another source for your comment about Mr. Wolf wanting the Goren angst to end?

I loved S7 and learning about Robert Goren's personal struggles. It made him all the more a hero to me, as he continued to close his cases throughout his hardships.

*inasmallvoice* ahem, it was ME who did the second translation and though my French is a long time ago and cross-translating from French to German to English may not be my greatest talent on earth, I really think I made an improvement and did get VDOs statements rather well....... Oh, you did Heikimikey as I previously stated. Your command of the English language is excellent as is your grammar, spelling and punctuation. I'm sure Techguy was referring to the original translation and not your version. I would like another Q&A interview with one of the writers as arranged previously on the forum. Maybe, Ed Zuckerman....please!
