Some great analyses of this episode As to the story behind this episode....I thought it raised some great issues. Respect to Marie - love your posts btw! - for taking an interest in issues like this and watching docu's and the news, but there are lots of people out there who never watch anything but fictional TV and for them shows like CI can highlight issues that they would never even have thought about before. We have similar imprisonment without trial or representation legislation over here and it really sucks. Kudos to CI for dealing with an issue that is pretty damn sensitive and coming out on the side of freedom and justice for all ;D Howdy! Glad you enjoyed my posts; that's kind of you to say - thank-you. To be sure; not everyone watches hard news or documentaries. And so to the extent the writers on Criminal Intent tried to address issues which have arisen in the wake of the Patriot Act, I applaude them for it. I live near Vancouver Canada; not far from the Washington State border. And so we're invariably hearing about U.S. Foreign Policy, Free Trade issues, etc. And because it effects us in terms of our relationship to the United States, I guess we tend to be more curious about what the Yanks are up to! Chuckle! Which isn't to say we can't tune it all out, come a Hockey game. LOL!

I've noticed that, while they are certainly loyal to the blue line, few things can enrage Goren and Eames as much as a police officer or any other law official abusing their power.

Detectives Goren and Logan doing the Nelda thing with each other? On a regular routine basis? Now that's a scary thought. Creative and unique, yes. But still very very scary.
Maybe the CI writers also plan to have Chocolate Jimmy come back in a recurring role too.
Who says the CI bigwigs aren't looking over their shoulders at "Desperate Housewives"? ILMAO thats too funny Techguy, and you could be on the money with that comment on "Desperate Houswives" It sure Is a hit down here. I wasnt bagging Logan, but I have watched him alot and Its just the comparison of the acting skills, they just come over to me as "chalk and Cheese" together, maybe thats why they will do their 11 eps seperate! katie

So I get to start this as I'm one of the few who was looking forward to seeing the Logan Character ...... Stress Indeed! That ending scene was as heartpounding as the one in Phantom. So far I'm pleased with Logan; it has given him a definate opening to be transfered to MCS. you've got that right! i was glued to the screen & i dont think that i even blinked LOL.

One thing I noticed on my second viewing was about the navy guy. When they were looking at the COs' files, Logan made fun of the navy guy for doing his tour in the band. Of course, Goren didn't mention this when he was trying to get to him. He appealed to his sense of bravery, although there was no indication that he was in a situation that required bravery. He never had a chance to do be brave in the service; so Goren gave him a chance to be brave and help someone else who was in the service. I bet he had wanted to be brave when he entered the service. Goren gave him the chance to do the right thing. Even though this guy wasn't Goren's first choice to talk down, he didn't run away like the others. I liked how he walked them out to make sure they were safe.

Logan really is a bit clueless, isn't he. Laughing at a veteran. He better BE one. I wonder why an excelent musician is working as a prison CO. (you have to be darn good to get into a military band) It *was* a nice touch, when he walked them out. I hadn't noted that.

One of the things I’ve always liked about LOCI is it’s consistent attention to detail - plot idiosyncracies aside, especially it’s attention to human nature. Here, for instance, the writers managed to convey the reality of a five month relationship. Logan and the nurse were so polite with each other, not familiar to the point of brutal honesty in the way a couple who’ve been married a long time are. They took pains more than average to respect each other’s personal space, to ask permission before going ahead. All of which explains why Logan, protective police guy that you’d expect him to be, left her in such a dangerous situation for so long. She been a nurse and he must have known about her work situation for at least as long as he had been going out with her.
The head guard reminded me of the coach in Mad Hops after Goren peeled away his protective layers. Stripped of the respect or, in this case, fear he was so used to seeing in the eyes of the guards and prisoners, he looked beaten down and old.
I found the partnership between Goren and Logan believable and complicated. I think Goren’s: " My desk is near the gun-rack" was a witty introduction for Logan; a way of saying: "You’re a tough guy but can you think? Underlined when Goren and Eames decided to let Logan in but on a test-basis. In other words they baited him about his hold over his girlfriend, a la criminal intent, knowing it was the fastest way to get his co-operation on the case.
The final scene was absorbing although I didn’t get the nuances of fear and so on that others members did. All in all I really enjoyed this one!

Come to think of it, how fun would it be to watch Goren and Eames play the odd head game with Logan, especially when it comes to manipulating his ego!

Come to think of it, how fun would it be to watch Goren and Eames play the odd head game with Logan *big grin* Now that is something I'd like to see too, Sirenna! Wonder what the two of them, working together, would bring out of ol' Logan...? hmmmm...

Mel Tex; you are right - it would be interesting to see Goren & Eames tag team up on Logan; but I think they are going to be more like ships passing in the night with the new set up of divided episodes.

Zimbardo interview ctd.. And now for Catbird...What I do know from those AP videos. Zimbardo arranged for the boys who were assigned to be prisoners to be picked up in squad cars fromt heir homes/schools, in front of the people they knew. Taken to the station, fingerprinted, then put in the hallways of the building that was the prison. He said at first everyone thought it was a joke, you know, college students in an experiment, but then by about day 3...the guards forced the prisoners to sing "Amazing Grace" while doing push-ups, solitary confinement, made them cry. One of the inmates did a hunger strike and had to be removed. Apparently the study was supposed to be about a month. One spot with technical difficulties in the interview, I believe, refers to Zimbardo "going home" after normal business hours but I think a lot of the time he'd go to the control room to watch the tapes. What he said in interviews was that as a psych researcher he was, at first, excited in the sense of "what great material we're getting!" (my paraphrase). One of his RAs who was helping monitoring turned to him in disgust and said "I think what you're doing to those boys is awful." They had a big argument, but Zimbardo then came to his senses and called it off. (Later he married that grad student.) Of the boys, I've seen a couple of them interviewed. I think one of the prisoners became a prison chaplain, or at least a reverend who does work in prisons. I'm sure there are lots of sites out there, I just thought people would want to see this. sorry this is OT: interestingly steve reicher and alex haslam in the UK attempted to replicate this study a couple of years back and failed to replicate the effect. The prison guards never lived up to their roles and became submissive to the prisoners, continually apologising and rarely punishing bad behaviour.
