Well I love the "whack job" facial expression. So funny. Hope they use that whole bit in a promo. Yea the music was different, but I took it as trying to update LOCI. What did NBC ever do for this show....lets see...almost let it die. If it wasn't for those of us who love this show, it would be gone.
I did like that Eames was on edge tonite. So glad that Bobby was there for her, even when he was at the lowest point in his life. He wanted the truth more than anything, that is the Bobby we love.
Now I am not quite sure about the blond Rogers. What if that is her real hair color??
Yea, loved the tie clip thing. So very, very good. Thanks again to VDO and KE for a great nite. I was not disappointed...thank you.

It has been a very long week so I can't say much right now, but:
I HATE the new theme. Aaack!
I got really nervous at the preview and actually let slip a couple of strange anathemas thinking "Oh no!!!" But Kathryn Erbe was amazing, and I guess they were trying to balance out Eames with some Taking! It! Personally! Very Special Episodes. However, I thought this one was handled better than a lot of Mama Goren and the mentor. For the original CI I came to love it was heavy-handed personal, but not soap. THey kept it subtle and believable, and what struck me was just how natural Eames' dialogue with GOren after the visitation felt; it came across as something you would be very likely to mention and remember out loud, not contrived angst and tension for the sake of sweeps. I liked concerned but collected Goren, and even Eames in the middle of all that personal hell kept herself functional. Yes, ditto the plea that the Emmy people had better recognize Erbe come next summer.
I still like Ross, the one for-sure right thing from last season. (Wheeler wasn't bad but I didn't see enough of her to say for sure.) First thing we see is a Dad trying to figure out how to handle his kid, and obviously still on speaking terms with the ex because they're trying to raise their children and figure out together the best possible way. (Sheesh, in bed with a girl? Aiy yi yi...) loved all the cops at the poker game, the cell phones, and then the abandoned table.
One weird nitpick though--Eames called Goren while he was at the house, and he said "No, you were right to call." But it seemed like she didn't know who got shot until they actually arrived at the hospital. Huh? Also, once they were officially reinvestigating Joe's death Eames should have been off like yesterday, but then we wouldn't get to see her stay strong with the oh-so-perfect "He was a good cop," rather than "You took my husband away from me!"
I also giggled at the tie clip--oh the discussions!--and "He doesn't do well with change." I hee'd out loud at "You can tell your partner to stop pacing now and join us"; did Goren not look like the sheepish little kid waiting for his buddy to get away from lecturing parents?
Blonde does not suit Rogers. My first thought was "Is she sick?" It looked like the actress has lost weight.
Techguy, I think that the doctor was a young kid tailing after his cousin, Maneira or whatever his name was, at the drug deal. He was excited and overeager and he panicked when Joe went for something that wasn't the gun the kid anticipated. He said the next day they had him on a plane back to San Juan to get him away from the aftermath, and it really did scare him straight--well, as straight as he could get without owning up to his actions.
The product placement bordered on painful--"cocoa puffs" and the closeup of the Chevrolet tire. Reminded me of "The Closer," which I love but I like the shows for different reasons and even there it irks. The initial camera work worried me, but it settled down. It wasn't the damn stalker cam! And no stupid music video! Hoorah!!

Techguy,
I got the impression that the cousin, the ER doctor from San Juan, was just there for the summer visiting. Since his cousin was a drug dealer, he was afraid something might happen to the kid if left alone. I believe that's why the "kid" was tagging along with him and had a gun. The kid was in a situation that he was unprepared for and scared to death and just acted with survival instinct. He didn't know that Joe was reaching for his badge.
I think Quinn felt guilty that he didn't come to his partners rescue in time, and when I suspect was brought forward he went along with it. As Goren says to Eames, the pressure for them to do the same thing was on them.
Edit: Well, it looks like Janetcatbird and I were typing away and had the same thought.

Thanks Catbird and gorensdoppelganger for your responses to my problem questions. After more thought, what you say makes sense, so I don't have as many issues anymore as I did when the episode ended.
Is the murdered detective named Flynn? I heard Quinn. Either I have to get my hearing checked, the audio on my TV adjusted, or I'm having flashbacks to the 1968 Bob Dylan song.

I really did enjoy this episode overall - I felt like it achieved a nice balance between Eames' backstory and the crime at hand. While it is indeed more "soapy" than how CI began, I guess I feel like this was way more subtle than the stories that focused on Goren (not that I didn't like those) and seemed to fit the show's format better. I do hope this is the road that they plan to continue traveling down!
Well said and I agree - I too was struck by just how natural the conversation seemed, despite its subject matter. It didn't seem over-the-top or out of place.
And oh, the tie-clip! The "whack-job" comment!
Techguy, I heard Quinn too...

Nope, you're right--Quinn was the murdered detective/Joe Dutton's partner.

Great episode. I'll wait a few episodes to see if I like the new theme.
I noticed the same possible problem as Catbird. I suppose it's possible she called him again, but we don't know. Not a big deal, just something I noticed.
I liked how Goren corrected the officer in the evidence room; that was classy. So, how long did she wait? Looked like several hours since Goren went at least two places and she ended up taking her jacket? off.
Can we assume Goren was taking 12 weeks of family leave and had two left? That would mean he had been gone 10 weeks? I'm not sure you would get 12 weeks AFTER the death of a family member. Also, I would think he would have taken several weeks after Thanksgiving, so he wouldn't have the full 12 left. So, I guess we still don't know. Just wondering.
It was Quinn. I watched it the second time with closed captioning on. Yes, I'm obsessive.

Yep, I meant to type Quinn, but I really am dyslectic, but I think it was more of a mid life moment ;D

I was sort of curious as to--Quinn has got to be a fairly common name? So how would she automatically know that the officer was who he was??
And is Eames supposed to be Irish, too?? ::still curious:: aaaand here I am posting again. Stop me!!

Deathroe, when you're trying to teach in the AM you're going to regret staying up this late. My take on why Eames called Goren...she didn't know who the fallen officer was at first, but it was a cop shooting and she knew Goren would want to be there. Ross even said to Bobby, "You still have two weeks leave left." Bobby replied, "Doesn't matter...a cop's been shot."

Since we're speculating on who Ross is"sleeping" with and hopefully dating, my odds are the fire weapons expert.
Techguy, sounds like a poll might be needed. I'm just being cute, but it might be fun.

Well, maybe the mother of his children will junk Toooddd, and they'll get back together! Or Nicole will come back, or Barek--the possibilities are endless, really (nwchimom, truer words. I'll be napping during office hours!)

Wasn't able to post last evening & didn't get to watch the entire episode until this morning. However, I thought it was excellent.
I freaked a little at the hyper music opening, but I believe that its important for viewers to separate CI from the rest of the Law & Order pack. The different music does that, yet the montage of clips is the same, which is comforting in its familiarity.
As Techguy touched upon, Goren is amazing in how he is totally not swayed by a misguided sense of loyalty to his brothers in blue. From the moment he met Quinn's partner, he was suspect of him, commenting on his lack of direct eye contact. Even that ridiculous Chief Of Detectives refused to be open minded about one of his men possibly lying. God Bless Ross, he totally trusted Goren in this. It says so much about him as a leader and of how he & Goren are in sync in their quest for the truth, no matter what.
I was shocked as all of you hearing Bobby say "Alex." It was scripted in such a way that it gave the impression that he does use her first name from time to time, we just weren't privy to it. Adding this to the script was an obvious gift to the fans. D'Onofrio & crew have been commenting lately about what the fans want. Well, they saw that this was a big desire of many fans. How nice of them to acknowledge it. Same with the tie clip. Another fan acknowledgment.
I was also shocked when I saw the scene where Goren & Eames are walking through that long line of angry uniformed police. The promo was tricky in not revealing that they were walking the murder suspect in.
I found the obvious plug for the show's sponsor, Chevrolet, an interesting choice. The close up of the hubcap of the Swat Team Van displaying the Chevy logo. Well, if that helps pay the bills, that's fine.
This isn't a knock, but Goren really did look heavier & puffier than he did last season. Maybe not 40 pounds, but a good 20. It also looked like they were emphasizing it, to indicate how he handles depression.
The scene between Goren & Quinn's son...so sad for Bobby. He looked so hurt. Although it did give him info on the skateboard & the whack job comment. Still, why do the ethical, good people have to suffer and be alone? And poor Eames, being loyal to her partner, even after Theresa Quinn confronted her about what Bobby had done.
I wasn't thrilled with the aria either. Or who was ultimately guilty. Somehow it was all anti climatic. Is that because the personal drama is so taught & exciting?

Wow... I am remarkably awake this morning with a spring in my step... despite the wee hours I was up until rewinding the tape to make sure I really really heard him say "Alex." I thought it was strong, solid, and subtle, with a dash of humor thrown in here and there. Not entirely sure I love the new credits... but I guess I don't totally hate them, and you had to figure that USA would want to put their own spin on things and set the new episodes apart a little bit. I need help from all my fellow eagle-eyed obsessed CI fans... the boy who shot Quinn and the drug dealer with his grandfather's gun (Delgado?) ... was that the same kid that Goren and Eames played in The Unblinking Eye when he stole the diamond ring and hid in the couch? I can't prove it at the moment, but it sure seemed like the same actor to me. Kudo's all around to all the acting in this. There were a lot of characters who you could have really hated, but there was an amazing amount of sympatheticness brought to them... Quinn's partner, Sang, Delgado -- Father and Son, Dr. Manny... And lets give a big shout out to our girl Katy who acts with a picture better than most of the actors out there do with real live people!!! And the new gentle, wounded, but finally clear eyed and free from such overwhelming stress... the new and improved Goren. Vincent managed to bring new stuff, even to the vocal tones he used in this episode that we've only seen from him before in those scenes with his mother. I'll probably go on and on (when have you known me not to) but the thing that struck me at the end of the episode what the what if's this brought up. What if Joe hadn't been killed... would Eames have become the cop she is today? What if Manny hadn't killed Joe. Would he have become the Doctor he is today? The moment in the car driving home/back from after the funeral visitation... was so nice because we got to see a side of Eames we haven't really seen... the one who feels like an outsider. We get all thin blue line from her and about her a lot of the time... but this opened up a whole 'nother perspective on her... the outsider, the widowed cop, the daughter of the disgraced cop. So when we get a situation where MCS is playing at being IAB... there's a lot at stake for her. Lovely. Off to digest it all and smile. Good work CI ... and it has to be said... way to work that tie clip!!!!
