Those weren't voices in Goren's head - those were the muffled voices of the people on the street. One was a street vendor hawking something.

No, I got the impression they were meant to seem inside his head. If you listen closely you can hear "What's happenning? and something else, according to another viewer.
I look forward to watching again.

I think that with all the emotional trauma Goren has suffered these last couple of seasons his control threshold is not as high as it was. The anger, sorrow and frustration that is bottled up inside him is not so well contained as before so when confronted with a volatile situation he "loses it" so to speak and he becomes physical. All his issues with his mother, father, brother, mentor, job and his loneliness are taking a toll. Add to that insomnia and you have the makings of a meltdown. He seems to be aware of his personal pressure cooker condition and is dealing with it the best he can but also continues to put on the "I'm OK" face to the world around him.

If you are correct, and the writer's have Goren hearing things, I will be very upset (not at you, MJ.....I mean at the writers ;D) Being obsessive, I replayed the end quite a few times & I put on the close-captioning. The close captioning didn't catch anything being said & it didn't say "voices heard." To me, it sounded like people talking behind Goren or next to him, but muffled. Hearing voices is a definitive sign of schizophrenia, and can't (& don't want to) imagine that the writers are going in that direction with Goren's character.

I have to believe--at least this is my hope--that the muffled voices are from vendors and passersby in Times Square, not what's going on in Goren's head. What's next, will Goren also see ghosts and visions (Logan redux from "Renewal")?
It's a shame we have to wait many weeks to see CI's episode 11 "Take Note..." which we know will be G/E. Maybe we'll get some advance scoop on what goes on in this episode so as to be able to accurately assess where Goren is mentally and psychologically.
On the positive side, at least we'll get one more look at G/E no matter what happens with the WGA strike. If "Untethered" turned out to be the last G/E episode of Season 7...I don't even want to think about it.

I'm of the opinion that they were voices on the street but amplified to emphasize the "I'm alone in the world" sort of feeling. That's the impression I got from it, but yes, I agree that I'd not be happy with the writers going down the road :/. I'll have to re-watch it and enlist some LOST fans who analyze the whispers on that show to have a go at the ending of this episode .

I'm thinking that the voices were from the people around the street. I thought their muffled confusion was an effort to indicate Goren's isolated and confused state.
My problems with this episode were the things that weren't there, not with the things that were there. And maybe that's unfair (g).
I was impressed by Goren's control when he faced the Chief of Detectives. He explained his position quite clearly, but appeared to be expecting the punishment he received was perhaps even grateful that it wasn't worse than it was. He's clearly not thrilled that he's suspended or that he has to undergo a psych exam, but he seems to recognize the necessity of the punishment.

Thx Our wonderful & generous spits has promised to post "Untethered" photos after her exams BTW, is it me or did VDO look wonderful in those last scenes with Frank? Wonderful meaning like Vincent normally looks - not all bleary eyed, pasty & puffy. As if the make up department forgot to make him look like shit for those scenes. And does anyone think he wears a pad to accentuate his belly? There is something unnatural looking about his stomach area, especially when he wears casual clothes.

I may get a chance to work on screencaps tonight, though it depends on how much I end up procrastinating (I'm already off to a great start !). I was able to make a clip of the "whispers" heard at the end of the episode though it's difficult to hear the voices over the music track (does anyone if it's possible to separate the two or at least edit part of it out?): www.mediafire.com/?3xnjwu5xqftI think I heard 'calm down man' and two unique voices - one was a man, the other sounded like a child (or at least someone younger). Still, to me it just sounds like amplified street noise...

I'll have to watch this ep again, (twist my arm, please!) but in the last scene there could be a different take on the motel line. Bobby demands to know about Donny. He pushes Frank around and his desk gets bumped into or something. Frank goes to the desk, moves some things around. I think he's covering up the syringe or crack pipe or whatever. He probably doesn't want to draw attention to what he just did so he thinks of something to say to throw Bobby off - to draw Bobby away from the desk and the proof that he's using drugs again. Well, suggesting that Bobby take Eames to a motel would definitely do that.

Didn't someone (Outsider, maybe?) suggest that very thing? And wow, I never thought the voices at the end were anything but street noise. I suppose I'll have to watch it yet again. My gut says Bobby wasn't hearing voices in his head, but I do remember thinking his posture and gaze were a bit off...so maybe the stress of "heaven" did push him to a psychotic break. (I don't even like typing that!)

Being from New York originally and going back a few times a year to visit family, I can tell you that it's noisy 24/7. I think it was to show that Bobby was so focused and worried about Donny that he was oblivious of his surroundings. Normally, Bobby would be busy observing and taking in what was going on around him, but this time it was all relegated to the background.

I just got done watching this and boy did they cut the heck out of the episode. Yes they did. I was especially surprised they cut Bobby finding Frank's drugs and his brutal reaction (the "bridge" comment). That was one of the most intense moments and shows how alone Bobby is in terms of family ties.
