Janet>> Yes, I think that its safe to say that CI is baaaack. Goren's character behavior in 'Slither' was very remnant of CI's good ole' days of seasons 1 & 2... its nice to have Mr. V. back looking healthy & rested ;D. Does anyone consider Goren as Metro-sexual? I dont, but I do believe that he does take a certain amount of pride in his appearence (doesn't his job depend on it?) .

I don't know who started it, but it's used to describe those guys who look so good that you'd think they must be gay or models, but they're actually just fashion forward straight men who take a lot of pride in their appearance. Since you are most likely to find men like this in a large metropolis, like New York, the term metro-sexual is a very fitting for them.
Now, this is just my speculation on the matter, but I think the reason more "metro-sexuals" are found in large cities is because of all the competition they face in both business and social situations. The old adage, "dress to impress," comes to mind when it comes to these guys. Plus, there is a more general acceptance of homosexuality, and the attributes associated with it, in places like New York, LA, London, etc. This would make it much easier for straight men to indulge in eyebrow waxing, spray on tans, and manicures without worry that it will effect their masculinity.
I do not think Goren is a metro-sexual, though. He is often in need of a shave and a hair cut, and his suits are frequently ill-fitting and occasionally even a bit rumpled. All in all, I think he's too disheveled looking too often for me to think he cares that much what people think of him based on a glance.
Now, Joe Fontana (Denis Farina's character on mothership) he's got all the goods of a metro-sexual. Ed Green has the makings, too, but he's still got that street toughness and punk vibe under his perfectly manicured hair and nails. Gawd, he's so sexy! I'm sorry, but if you guys can gush on VDO, I'm allowed a little Jesse L. Martin love here and there ;D

he's a bit of a metro-sexual wannabe though. In Badge it was pointed out for him that he was picky about buying his clothes.
He tries but at the end of the day, he's just too much of a guy to give a dam*!

trisha>> LOL I love Jesse L Martain too! I was like 'hello gorgeous!' when he came on the L&O scene & I actually cried when he was shot. I thought they were ending his character for sure . I don't think that Goren is metro-sexual myself, but I do think that he realizes that he has to put a certain sence of importance on his appearance, due to the status of his profession. Judging by what he wears when he is undercover or staking out, I'd say no.

I thought Micheal York very effective as Bernard (dare we read some significance that Bernard, like Nicole, is blonde? More white=evil?), and appeared to be having a very good time in playing the role and playing opposite Mr. D'Onofrio.

Okay I have just had the oppertunity to re-view this ep & it's one of my new faves for season 5! Bernard was such a great villian & was a perfect match for Goren. I also liked how they included Nicole without actually including her.

Agonies--I locked my keys in my car at a store some 15 minutes before the episode began. GIVL! Have to wait two weeks to see it on USA. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Patcat Patcat, I completely forgot to ask at the time: what does GIVL mean?

Well, if you look at the letters next to GIVL, you'll see that they spell out a certain ancient Anglo-Saxon curse word (g).

Maybe when I was down in my basement this past weekend, I should have also looked for my college copy of "Beowulf"!!!

Not for nothing is our Parsifal( Goren) contemplating the image of Venus(Aphrodite) whose symbol was the hand held mirror from which we get our symbol for female!!!!!!!Eat your heart our Sirenna!!! The archetype endures!! janet: He wasn't contemplating Venus on the half-shell. That was an empty ceiling he was looking at and he certainly wasn't pining for it either! LOL! When you talked about cadence, which scene were you referring to; the one in Bernard's apartment or the one in the interview room? Bernard was not the perfect match for Goren. Nicole was the perfect match for both of them! I saw a lot of humour in this episode which I missed the first time it was aired - the stolen Venus ceiling was one of them. Remember when Eames interviewed the screenwriter? "Broken up. Very," she said in the wry way that only she can. There were several digs at screenwriters like talking in sound bites. I thought Bernard was diliberately written as a caricature, spoofing sauve and debonair, like Evelyn Waugh would write, with no real substance to him underlying that what passed as his charisma was really the empty vanity and superficiality of people like Marsden, Russ and his wife. "He had flawless taste in neckties." I like watching this one even more than the first time.

Part of Bernard's undoing was that he thought he was a perfect match for anyone & with his minions (being the women) behind him he deemed himself unstoppable. Oh how I would have loved to have seen the look on his face in those moments before death after Nicole injected him, I'm almost certain she showed him her face so he could see that his undoing came at the hands of his 'most perfect creation'.

Does anybody know what a "glovel stop (sp?)" is? It's what Bobby called the villain's speech pattern.

I believe he said "glottal stop" which (and I'm no linguist, so someone else may have a better explanation) is when, due to your accent, you close your throat on certain sounds when you're speaking. So it can help identify where you're from.
