My completely biased, unobjective, illogical view and rating of the 4th Season Episodes so far (G):
1)WANT: A disturbing dance into both the killer's and Goren's head that left everyone involved bruised. Particularly strong in the performances of the regular cast members and guest Neil Patrick Harris.
2)SEMI-DETACHED: Another excursion into Goren's psyche, a place I find fascinating. (I know there are those who dislike these episodes, and I understand, I think. But I'm a sucker for them.)
3) POSTHUMOUS COLLECTION: A solid example of what LOCI does best, and a good change of location from inside Goren's head to a solid investigation.
4) IN THE DARK: Overly complicated plot, as several people have mentioned. In its favor are the fine performances by the guest stars and the obvious impact of the case on both detectives.
5) EOSPHOROUS: Well done, but forgettable in some way.
6) GREAT BARRIER: Well, it probably couldn't have live up to all of its hype. But extremely well-acted, and I must confess I was holding my breath during the confrontations between Goren and Nicole.
My two bits. Please attack!

Re: Eosophorus.
It was good but something was off because I found my attention wandering both times I watched which never happens. The second time I watched I could see how well the plot and dialogue flowed but it still didn't help elevate it. You're right, Patcat. Something was off. A magic in the synergy of the cast that was missing perhaps, or a detachment among the main characters? I can't put my finger on what it was.
which is weird because it is the only episode in all four seasons that, as good as it was, lacked that spark (magic) that makes me post at length on the show each week. It was good but ordinary at the same time.

so far the most enjoyable episode of this season has been the Post.Collection; as you said, Patcat, just a good solid episode.
There are more to come - but so far that is my most CI of the CI episodes.

My favorite's been Semi-Detached. Second would be Want, although I had trouble getting past one thing (in deference to Catbird, I won't mention what). I like the emotional episodes, although I wouldn't want them every week.
I thought Great Barrier was fairly well done (but I prefer the alternate ending). I agree about Eosphoros. I thought it was fine, but when I saw the episode name here, I had to think about which one it was even though it's just been a week!

Hee hee, Darmok! Thank you kindly!
I missed "Eosphoros", hopefully I'll remember to catch it--is it this Saturday on USA? The others, well. "Want" is my favorite so far. I like where they're developing the characters for the most part, although the cases themselves have been hit or miss.
Sorry I can't think of specifics, just had to wade through Athanasius "On the Interpretation of Psalms". I'm with Jane Eyre-- Psalms are not interesting--and little tiny print with a redundant author does not help matters any. So my concentration is pretty much shot.

season 4 so far: Blah. Ok, there were some really good shows too! They seem this season to want to get into Goren's head more and that is annoying to me. I like the original way the story was set: Goren and Eames catch the bad guys, like season 2 was. I've seen people say Goren acts like he's heading for a breakdown or what not. I'm not looking forward to that if that is the way they are going. I sure hope not.

I sure hope not also, we have enough shows that like to delve into all that personal upheaval, I like the CRIMINAL INTENT aspect.

I'm with you both on that one! More crime fiction and less soap opera works for me.

And now for something completely different... (with apologies to Monty Python):
Favorite S4 episode so far--"Great Barrier" with Nicole dies ending Least liked S4 episode so far--"Great Barrier" with Nicole lives ending
Who says Det. Goren and/or CI can't develop schizophrenia at this age?

More crime fiction and less soap opera works for me. That's why the first season finale "Tuxedo Hill" is my favourite, as far as season finales goes. The motivation was simple...$$$greed$$$.

As I wonder off from the topic of this thread even after TechGuy's gentle reminder ....
Yeah, and I still say, Cherry Red, Baby! Best episode for me yet, all sorts of criminal intent in that one.

Cherry Red still rocks for me, but I am warming up to Season 4 a little more after these last few episodes.

Season 4 has been strangely meh for me. I've watched it, some of the shows twice, but not with the same intensity of the first few seasons. Maybe because I really dislike Goren over identifying with the whack jobs. They're cold blooded killers for the most part.
I miss all his "friends" from all walks of life too.

We're probably about halfway through the 4th season, and it seems that the last two or three episodes have been solid outings, but ones that don't seem to set off sparks in the same way WANT or SEMI-DETACHED did. Does anyone else feel that the season started with such fireworks--WANT, SEMI-DETACHED, the Nicole Wallace episode (whether one liked them or not, it was almost impossible not to react to these), that a bit of an emotional letdown was inevitable? I'm not discussing the quality of the episodes necessarily, but rather the audience's emotional responses to them.
