Now, thing is with "Want", I could understand the character Goren trying to get rid of the death penalty for John. Bless his heart, the poor boy was unstable and mentally diseased, so while he definitely needed to be confined and restricted for the sake of society he didn't need to be killed. What I had trouble with was Goren spazzing out without a build-up, just out of the blue SMACK "No!!" That wasn't whiny so much as just poorly planned, way too extreme way too quick. That, and the at times excessive quirkiness of Goren, is what I meant by hammy, almost a sense of "Watch me emote!" rather than a legitimate characterization.
But I gotta love a line form one of Bob Hope's radio broadcasts during WWII, when the troops could write in for their favorite sounds and requested Lana Turner to cook a steak for them... Bob Hope: "Wow, you see this audience! You think it's safe for them to be so close to this steak?" Lana Turner: "Oh, I don't know Bob, they've seen ham all night and you're still here."
(Sorry, just couldn't help but think of that!)

Wow Janet! It doesn't seem we have to run for the shelter. (Darnnit I was looking forward to seeing you there! It seems some members agree with us. I thought sure that my post would bring a firestorm, it would be time for "hats and bats" as they used to say. When I saw five replies listed in my email I had to sit back and say "do i really want to read these?" Of course I do! And in the end it was a was a complete surprise...so far. I do disagree (mildly) with one of your descriptors of Goren Janet. I tend to think of him as campy rather than hammy. Neither one of which endears him to me. As for Robin Williams, I was sort of going for the ridiculous, I still think David Caruso would be sublime (if he could thoroughly rid himself of the stink of CSI Miami.) I can just imagine how long that screechy little blond (if he chose to bring her with him) would last in a NYPD squad room. chief

I'm curious. What's the difference between hammy and campy? Is one the means and the other the end? ;D
Kudos to us though because I do think we were perceptive to have spotted nuances in Vincent's acting and appearance that corresponded to his fainting spells. He speaks to us in many ways.

Sirenna, In my limited knowledge of the art of acting (I do watch Actor's Studio occasionally) and with the admitted assistance of Mr. Webster's New Unabridged Dictionary I present the following: He explains hammy as "overacted or exagerated". Campy is defined as "the intentional use of the amusingly outlandish, affected, theatrical or banal". Now it is up to you to decide which applies.... chief

Just had an idea! How about Donnie Wahlberg as a replacement. I thought he was great in the unfortunately underwatched and now defunct series "Boomtown". He is from Boston (Known far and wide as "The Athens of the New World" and my birthplace) so I think his accent could (almost) easily translate to NewYorkese. He certainly showed the ability to do a good job on the police work while trying to handle the enormous personal problems assigned to the character. Yeah, that's it, Donnie Wahlberg! (He is good to his mother and remembers his roots). chief

Hey thanks for the dictionary quote Chief! ;D I think I'm gonna go with "hammy" for 200, Alex! And yea, Janet, I see where you're comming from about Harris' character in 'Want'. He was completely pathetic, and to a point I did feel sorry for him... but dang! Eating her flesh! I was almost relieved when they said he'd been put out of his misery in the cell yard.

Okay, I didn't say anything earlier about David Caruso, cuz I really liked him, too. But, CSI:M has ruined all of his appeal for me. Whenever I look at him now, all I see is Horatio Caine: Grief Whisperer and keeper of the Sunglasses of Justice. He makes me want to puke, and if he came to CI, I could never watch again.
Now Donnie Wahlberg is an interesting choice. He really can be quite a chameleon, but for me his accent is pervasive in every role he plays, so unless the character is from Boston, I'll be continually pulled out of the story. Even VDO's little accent bothers me sometimes.

C'mon Trisha, is my Bawston accent so different from that of NYC or Nawth Jersey? I think it would take more than the accent to preclude Donnie's playing the part well to perfection. And it wouldn't be campy. We could always post him as a transfer from the BPD as was John Munch from B'more PD. After all, Bill Bratton got along very well on two different PD's in NYC with his Boston accent. Excuse me now Deah, I have to go Pahk my cah in the Hahvahd Yahd. chief

<Snort> Oh I love the Sunglasses of Justice! Thats hilarious, and so true! What would Caruso do if someone stole his sunglasses? How would he be able to "strike his pose", and deliver his groan-inducing one-liners?! (such a dork) I think someone needs to steel those sunglasses. And refresh my memory, what else has Donnie Wahlberg been in? The name sounds familiar but I keep putting the wrong face to it. Great effect Chief, with your Boston accent. <snicker> I don't think I could type my accent out that well!

Mel Tex Donnie Wahlburg, the brother of Mark Wahlburg of the singing group Marky Marks, was also in the movie Sixth Sense. I believe that Donnie also sang with the group (or another closely related one) in his younger days. He had a very interesting younger life and overcame some adversity (partly due to being born and raised in the Dorchester section of Boston). That was another area like Southie where you grew up to be a cop, a priest, or a hoodlum. (And some wag said there was an occasional crossover amongst the choices). I really enjoyed him (and the series) in Boomtown. Why do all the realistic and good ones seem to go down the tube ? chief

Chief, I don't mind the Boston accent just as long as it makes sence for the character to have one I don't know if it's that Wahlberg can't hide it well enough, or if he hasn't been trying, but I have heard it in every role I have seen him in. BTW, the group that Donnie was in was New Kids on the Block

All our hard work on a talent hunt for a replacement for Vinny gone to waste? In a New York Times article Sunday by Mark Lasswell the actor's fainting spells are explained by overwork. He is working on a film about Orson Welles during the off season and apparently it is a bit too much. Dick Wood is quoted as saying that Chris Noth was considered as a replacement if it should become necesary. According to the article, D'O lacks a clause in his contract (one that is insisted upon by more experienced TV actors) that restricts the number of scenes in which he appears in an episode. Sorry Chris, David and Donnie. chief

I don't think (putting words in someone's else's mind) that Mr. D'Onofrio would like CI with a restricted Goren, not for ego reasons - but the show was written before D'Onofrio was cast as very heavy Goren & the show plus being close to home was what sold him on doing a TV series.
But - it does seem the replacement is already picked - I think unless they have Noth as a whole new "character" on CI - it is a mistake. I really liked his L&O character, but that character of Logan will not fill the need for CI.
