christ - trisha; that's exactly what is going on with my viewing .... the first season was so unique, energetic, it just rolled on; I couldn't wait for the next episode ...... now, they are good - but I am really watching it out of a hang over habit from the 1st season.
Re: Chief's posting; Noth, if he came on - it wouldn't be CRIMINAL intent anymore. It would have to be Law before the Order. I really liked his character, but I was enthralled by the delving into the CRIMINAL's motive, thoughts, actions ...... that's rarely there anymore.
I liked Goren, now I feel sorry for him. If the series does continue, I hope they go back to the pysch delving and mental mining they did before.

It's probably too late to post in here and have it read, as the topic has been well-covered, but I only just found out that D'Onofrio won't be coming back at the end of season 6...!
Note: I'm fine. There was still some 15 yr old single-malt scotch in the house left over form Christmas. Not anymore now of course, but I disgress. Ahem.
So; who would I cast in season 7 as a new partner for Eames?
NOT Chris Noth. Not unless Det. Mike Logan has matured since we saw him last. Don't get me wrong, loved him on Law & Order - HUGE fan, but imo the character's too cocky for CI; he'd be putting his foot into his mouth at least once per episode, and I could do without seeing Eames endlessly rolling her eyes back into her head.
NOT David Caruso. Not even if he were free to do it. I'd stop watching and burn Dick Wolf in effigy! For I take not just a little issue with his acting style; imo - Caruso's opinion "of" himself as an actor tends to leech onto the screen in a really annoying way. Same deal with Denzel Washington, though to a lesser extent.
A totally subjective call on my part, but there ya go; chuckle! I only mention the above dislikes because it's a quick & easy way to comment on posts I've read expressing an interest in perhaps seeing those actors etc. Heard ya. Disagree. Moving on.... smile.
Now, someone mentioned English actor Gary Oldman. Awesome choice. I guess he'd have to be part of some "foreign exchange" program with New Scotland Yard and the NYPD; chuckle. Unless he wants to add "faking an American accent" to his list of daily tasks on the show.
I loved Oldman in Sid & Nancy! Blew me away! I can still see him yelling into the phone as Nancy begs her mom to send them cash as a wedding present - "HELLO MUM!" Laugh!
However when left to his own devices, Oldman "can" on occation over-play a scene. He needs a fair but firm directorial hand, does our Gary. Otherwise he goes a bit Jack Nicholson on you. (See "Leon: The Professional" - unedited director's cut by Luc Besson.)
Which leads me to reflect upon Jean Reno's performance (he played the hitman, Leon. Also starred an 11 yr old Natalie Portman, for the curious.)
Born in France, so again "accent issues" needing to be accounted for, Jean Reno delivered one of the best performances he's ever given. So he can definately act. And he played a detective a few years ago in "Crimson Rivers". Like Goren, he too was insightful and smart. But he's older, been there and seen it all, and so his character had reached a point now where he could smile at life's trials and tribulations and shrug them off.
Nathaniel Parker - yet another Brit, is currently shooting more episodes of the "Inspector Lynley Mysteries" for the BBC; based on the Elizabeth George novels. His partner "Havers" is a female; although the dynamic is slightly different (class issues here) I could see him playing opposite Eames. Were he free to do it.
Harvey Keitel "is" New York. And his range and skill as an actor is well known. But perhaps he's too well known and it would get in the way? For flashing back once too often to characters he's previously played. Hmm.
Ideally, if you could talk him into it, I'd cast whom I consider to be the finest American actor working today:
Sean Penn
He's fearless, embraces the visceral with both hands, and possesses a dramatic and comedic range unmatched by his rivals. For HERE'S the guy who went from Jeff Spicoli in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" to Eastwood's "Mystic River".
And I can see him applying street smarts as oppossed to the benefits of owing a well-used library card to suppliment the intuition required to get inside a suspect's head. Similar process, different methods, same net result. GOTCHA.
So that's who I'd pick.

Hi Marie, gosh where did you find out that Vincent Is staying untill 2007?? alot of fans are saying that he wont see his 5year contract out which nobody can seem to work out when he signed It. Was It 2000 when he shot the first 10 weeks or 2001 when he decided to do the show full time? they are still filming the 4th season arent they?? which means I suppose they will get Into season 5 before the year ends?? There has been so much talk of Vincent leaving after his contract Is up, now he Is staying Woopi, please share your findings this Is great news. Katie

There has been so much talk of Vincent leaving after his contract Is up, now he Is staying Woopi, please share your findings this Is great news. Katie Isn't he signed-up until the finale of season 6..? That's the the impression I got from reading various things online, in the wake of his fainting spell. I could have sworn I'd read something to the effect wherein he was staying on through 2006. Unless... It's currently 2005. We're at the half-way point of season 4. Sept of 2005, the start of the 5th season, which runs over into 2006; up to May, I believe. Could be I thought his CONTRACT extends all the way through to the end of 2006. But it does make more sense that it's a seasonal contract: 4th season 2004/2005, 5th season 2005/2006 ends in May As opposed to: 4th season Sept - May 2004/2005 5th season Sept - May 2005/2006 6th season Sept - Dec 2006/ As why have him do just "half" of the 6th season? Gosh! That sucks! For here I was thinking I'd get to see him for a few more months! But I think now the end of season 5 is more likely the case! Nuts! Stupid split-year seasonal math! Chuckle! No doubt they'll hire an American. It would cool if they succeeded in signing-up another hitherto "film only" actor, as then you're not remembering some guy's stint on another show, or all his various cameos over the years, everytime he does something etc. For it's served Goren's character well, I think, that D'Onofrio was never really known for any one role in particular. More of a clean slate for viewers. So I hope that'll be the case when Eames gets a new partner!

Well, that would put him under contract to start off the last season and give the viewers closure when Goren departs ... which would give them a chance to run out the season with a new character/actor and see how the viewers respond before contracting more seasons.
I like all the actors you chose, Marie, but again, I think along the lines of not only who would be good, but who could realistically be considered.
But, if we're going for anyone, I'd put Gary Oldman and Sean Penn on my list, too. I also like Mark Ruffalo, who I think would be more attainable than Oldman or Penn, but who reminds me too much of Vincent D'Onofrio -- which would be weird.
Observer, have you seen Mark Ruffalo in anything?

Well, that would put him under contract to start off the last season and give the viewers closure when Goren departs ... which would give them a chance to run out the season with a new character/actor and see how the viewers respond before contracting more seasons. I can see how that could work, too; start with Goren in season 6 - while getting viewers ready for the new guy, who then takes over for the end of season. And doesn't it happen like that in real life? Police Officers take up new positions or leave their old ones at various points in the year; it's not timed to the start of a new Television season, chuckle! So maybe... maybe... fingers crossed! I think my choices were universally "UN" realistic; LOL! As not one of them would be offered the job. But then, who'd have guessed they'd have asked D'Onofrio? Hmm. Never know, I guess! Chuckle; when I read Mark Ruffalo, I got an image in my mind of another actor named Vincent Gallo - LOL! (He appeared in "Buffalo 66" with Christini Ricci) but more recently created an uproar at Cannes 2003 with his film "The Brown Bunny". It was still a rough cut, and not actually ready but he had to submit it anyway I believe, to please some marketing people and the critics LOATHED it with a passion not seen until Gigli. Roger Ebert called it "the worst film ever to show at Cannes". Most people walked out, disgusted. Ebert's since seen the final cut and softened his views. So for a second there I went HUH?! You'd like to see that actor on the show?! Then I took another look at the name and ahhh... confusing them for seeing Vincent.... Ruffalo... Vincent Gallo who did Buffalo 66.... Chuckle! I need some coffee...!

Given his last few monumental disasters at the box office I would imagine Ben Affleck might be available................too bad he can't act! Seriously It's hard to think of anyone replacing D'Onofrio as its his characterization of Gorin that sets the tone for the show. If they did try to replace him I think it would have to be with someone who was completely different ie Christian Slater, Timothy Hutton or or an off the wall type like Joe Pesci.

Christian Slater? I guess he's not a horrible choice, but that voice....
Now I'm having flash backs of Jimmy Fallon doing an impression of Christian Slater answering the phone at Jack Nicolson's house ;D

;)Lol yeah Slater does tend to be a bit nasal for a weekly gig! Actually I think maybe someone more of a character actor would be better as say Michael Madsen. I doubt anyone would top D'Onofrio though.

....I doubt anyone would top D'Onofrio though. Hi noseybug! Welcome to the Forum! ;D Every time I try to think of who could be Det. Eames next partner, I find I can only think of actors who "could" play a decent Detective, as opposed to actors capable of replacing D'Onofrio's presense on the show. As the minute I actually try to imagine it without him, I draw a blank! I'm so going to miss him when he's gone!

Of coarse, most of us would rather not see VDO go, but ... If you had to pick someone to take his seat across from Erbe/Eames, who would it be and what would the character be like? It sould be cool if it were a woman, a kind of female verson of Goren. In fact i did this in one of my fictions & here is how i described her: Tall with waist length curly black hair, olive skin vivid green eyes... i named her 'Olivia Devens' LOL. But if i had a pick a known actor/actress here are my choices: I have liked the X files sence i was young (tho i havent watched it for a long, long time) & i would love to see David on CI or parhaps the actress that played oppisite him (i'm sorry but her name always escapes to the corners of my mind where i cant seem to reach it). Parhaps someone younger? maybe like the kid who plays that genuis on the CBS show 'Numbers'? That's all i have for now.

This topic is a little too long to be able to read every post, so if anyone's already suggested this, my apologies. Anyway, here's my suggestion: steal Gary Sinise from CSI: NY, and put him in Criminal Intent instead!!!! Now there is serious screen presence and talent to equal our beloved Vincent. And, I think I could cope with watching him if Vincent were no longer around. ;D

blucougar, a few people did suggest Gary Sinese. I don't think there were any objections to him, either. He's just not someone the producers could realistically get for the show, though. Not until CSI:NY is cancelled or he leaves the show, anyway. Kawaii, the guy from Numb3rs is David Krumholtz, and I like him, too, though I have yet to see a whole episode of the show. I must admit, though, that I'm not a fan of the longer hair (big surprise!). I also see him as ungettable with the sucsess Numb3rs is enjoying. David Duchovny is an interesting choice, though. Haven't seen him in anything lately, either, but he was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart promoting his movie that he wrote, produced, and starred in. Since it was brought up that Liev Schriber was considered for Goren, I've been wondering how different the show would be with him on it. I'd definitely be open to seeing him on the show
